A library of petroglyphs - Atlatl Rock

There's more to do in Valley of Fire State Park than just looking at red rocks and arches. At Atlatl Rock (pronounced AT-lat-l) a long and steep set of iron stairs climbs up a rock wall to an incredible panel of ancient Native American Indian petroglyphs or rock drawings. The word 'atlatl' in the Nahuatl language refers to a stick, used to propel a spear further than it can normally be thrown.
Don't stop just there though - circle around the rock and you will find a massive library of petroglyphs of hunters, mountain sheep, spirals, birds, men and other objects telling a multitude of ancient stories. Around each monolith new discoveries are to be made.

Square Butte - Navajo Nation near Kaibeto AZ

Northern Arizona has much the same geology as southern Utah, so, same as southern Utah, northern Arizona is prime territory for rock formations.
Roughly halfway between Monument Valley and Lake Powell is Arizona's White Mesa, where spectacular rock formations spring out of the otherwise flat desert.
Square Butte is one of these prominent sandstone formations. Framed by juniper pines, the smooth red and orange striations at the base of Square Butte juxtapose the sharply angled yellow and white crest.

Nature - THE most eccentric artist

Valley of Fire, 55 miles north of Las Vegas, Nevada is an area with spectacular rock formations caused by earth movements and millions of years of erosion. The oldest rock is estimated to be 600 million years old.
In my imagenation the rock in this image is the petrified face of the legendary southern Paiute renegade indian who used this area as a hideout in the late 19th century.

Nestled into a limestone recess high above the flood plain of Beaver Creek in Arizona's Verde Valle, stands one of the best preserved cliff ruins in North America.
This 5-story, 20-room cliff dwelling served as a "high-rise apartment building" for prehistoric Sinagua Indians more than 800 years ago.
Early settlers to the area assumed that the imposing structure was connected to the Aztec emperor Montezuma, but "Montezuma Castle" was abandoned almost a century before Montezuma was born

The saguaro cactus is often used as an emblem in commercials and logos that attempt to convey a sense of the southwest, even if the product has no connection to Arizona, or the Sonoran Desert.
Wild suguaro cacti grow only in the Sonoran Desert in the U.S. state of Arizona, the Mexican state of Sonora, a small part of Baja California in the San Felipe Desert and an extremely small area of California, U.S.
There are no wild saguaros anywhere in such western U.S. states as Texas, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, or Nevada, nor in the high deserts of northern Arizona.
If these adorable "trees" would grow just everywhere they wouldn't be so special.

A Spiky Home

The White Winged Dove has a special partnership with the saguaro cactus. The birds time their migration to the Sonoran Desert to coincide with the blooming of the Saguaro Cacti. The doves rely on saguaros for water and nutrients during breeding season.
On the other hand the cacti rely on the doves for pollination as they go from flower to flower sipping nectar. When the flowers turn to fruit, about the end of June, they are filled with thousands of small saguaro cactus seeds which the doves help to spread as they regurgitate food to their young and spread the seeds through their droppings.

Fresh water often is in short supply on hot, dry summer days. This water fountain doubles as a bird bath and drinking station. Within ten minutes seven different bird species visited the fountain, one of them was this cheerful male house-finch.
I admired the unique beauty of each one along with their distinctive mannerisms. They seemed to enjoy drinking and splashing with their audience watching them.

Originally named the 'Palace of Sino-Soviet Friendship', the Shanghai Exhibition Center was intended to showcase Chinese advances in agriculture and industrial technology. The building was renamed to 'Shanghai Pavilion' when the relations between China and the Soviet Union began to sour.
Today the 'Shanghai Exhibition Center' with its gilded spire topped with the Soviet star is one of the most iconic buildings in Shanghai - testament to the ties between the two countries, their shared history and the influence the Soviet Union once enjoyed in China. It is still in use as an exhibition space.

Before 1990, Pudong was mainly farmland and countryside. In 1993, the Chinese government decided to turn the area into a Special Economic Zone and the western tip of the Pudong district was designated to be the new financial hub of modern China called the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone.

The Monument to the People's Heroes, three gun-like towers in Shanghai's Huangpu Park, was built in the 1990s by the Shanghai municipal government in memory of the Chinese martyrs of the Opium War, the May 4th Movement and the War of Liberation as well as those who have lost their lives fighting natural disasters.
The monument, also called the Chopsticks Monument, was the first large scale memorial built in New China.
Towering 10 stories high, its northern facade is dominated by the inscription, "Eternal Glory to the People's Heroes" (in Mao Zedong’s handwriting).

One of the true treasures of Yuyuan Garden is the Exquisite Jade Rock. The rock is 3.3 meters (~ 10.8 feet) in height and has 72 holes. What is interesting about this white jade rock is that if you burn a joss stick just below the rock, the smoke will magically float out from all of the holes. Similarly, when you pour water into the rock from top, the water will flow out from each hole creating a spectacular sight to see.

China was the first country that developed paper currency (in the Tang Dynasty during the 7th century), and the perception of banknotes as money has evolved over time.
In 1023 the S'ung dynasty (Song dynasty) cautiously issued true-paper money, in small amounts in a limited area good for a specific time period. The notes would be redeemed after three years, to be replaced by new notes.
The most famous Chinese issuer of paper money was probably Kublai Khan, the Mongol who ruled the Chinese empire in the 13th century. Kublai Khan established currency credibility by decreeing that his paper money must be accepted by traders on pain of death. As further enforcment of his mandate, he confiscated all gold and silver, even if it was brought in by foreign traders. Marco Polo was impressed by the efficiency of the Chinese system, as he chronicles in his "The Travels of Marco Polo" ("Il Milione").
Today's Chinese currency is the "Renminbi" which translates to the "people's currency". The China dollar is made up of "yuan", which is often called "kuai", and "jiao" which is often called "mao".
And even in China it's the same old story when it comes to money: The rich want to keep the money while workers don't have enough of it.

Tea itself is of Chinese origin, so is the use of teapots. However, the invention of teapots came at least 500 years after tea was first made to drink. It wasn't until the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) that the first teapots were created.
The most popular teapots in this time were produced in the YiXing region of China. They were made from purple clay, called "zisha clay", and are known to be of fine texture and high quality. It is said that, after using a Yixng tea pot for decades, you can brew tea simply by pouring boiling water into the pot.

Shanghai, China is a fascinating ultra-modern city. At breathtaking speed it developed from a small port to an international metropolis and paradise for global adventurers. And although the Chinese government restricts the movement of its own people from the countryside to the cities as well as the number of babies a couple is allowed to raise Shanghai keeps growing and growing.
But life in the back alleys of Old Shanghai hasn't changed that much. The residents have not changed much either. You can see the drying clothes outside, little plants in front of the doors, the basins to wash the vegetables but also to do your toilet; in the windows sausages or fish are hanging to dry beside some socks or bras; fine hand made bird cages hang or stand in the windows ... a labyrinth of streets which are stuffed with peoples life.

Just 10 years ago, dogs were still eaten in China's public restaurants and raised on farms for that purpose, and traditional Chinese medicine held that so-called "fragrant meat" from dogs could fortify one's health. Now, eating dog is viewed by many as an embarrassing reminder of a poorer time.
With more money to spend, Chinese pet owners have embraced dog-owning culture with a vengeance. Dogs are brought into restaurants, fussed over in public, dressed up in ridiculous outfits and their coats are dyed. The trend demonstrates how quickly and dramatically attitudes toward pets — particularly dogs — have changed in many parts of Asia.
The special dyes for dogs used are completely non toxic and not harmful to the animals, and this dog is unfazed by its new blue ears.

Qibao Ancient Town is one of the oldest and most famous towns in China. With two rivers flowing through, Qibao Town enjoys great geographical advantages.
Each of the two waterways has its own special characteristics. Unlike some of the other water towns near Shanghai, these riverfronts tend to have a more relaxed feeling as they aren’t as touristy as the others.

The earliest bell so far excavated in China is one which dates to the Longshan culture some five to six thousand years ago and was made of clay. It was unearthed near Xi'an in Shaanxi province. China was also one of the first countries in the world to cast bells made of bronze. The earliest Chinese bronze bells date back at least to the fourteenth century B.C. of the Shang dynasty. The Chinese also invented, developed and perfected tuned bells earlier than anyone else. By at least the 6th century B.C. sets of finely tuned bells were being produced and the Chinese even based their bulk measurements on the musical pitches of bells. From the Tang dynasty (618-906) onward, bell casting flourished and iron was also being used to make them.
China went on to produce a large number of bells. Thousands of bells still survive in China dating from the Tang, the Song (960- 1279), Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.
In China bells very rarely have internal clappers but are instead struck on the outside with a mallet or a hammer. They still play an important role as a warning system and to mark certain times of the day as well as in temples (Buddhism and Taoism).

In a back street the Qibao Catholic Church (Qibao TianzhuJiaolang) is to be found, with a working convent alongside. The church, originally known as the "Church of the Assumption of Mary", was first built in 1869, but the present structure dates from 1896, with the last changes made in 1929.

After tens of years of research China’s famous scholar Professor Gong Yu Hai put forward a surprising discovery: Jesus is Chinese.
According to Professor Gong Yu Hai an old center empire existed on the earth many thousands of years ago. In this center empire Zhuan Xu was born in 2948 B.C. At the age of 30 Zhuan Xu wnet west to preach. The religion that Zhuan Xu set up is present Christianity. Zhuan Xu is Jesus’ prototype.
However, about A.D. One, fanatic religious reformers recomposed the old content and history of this Christianity doctrine which caused that present people not to know if Jesus really existed.

Although often called the moral foundation of our society, a moral code of behavior and basic ethical rules, the Ten Commandments, a covenant or arrangement God made with specific people at specific times in history, are instructive but not necessarily imperative for us. They may be reinterpreted for different contexts. Their ethical value must be cautiously explored, not assumed.

When we picture old China dragons and lions come to mind.
Chinese guardian lions, also known as Imperial guardian lions, shishi lions, 'Foo Dogs' and ‘Fu Lions’, are a symbol for luck and prosperity, power and grandeur. However, because lion images have existed for so many years, the meaning of the symbols attached to the animal have grown and changed.
It is said that the Chinese dragon had nine sons, each of whom was endowed with a unique supernatural power. The eighth son was like a lion. One Chinese legend holds that female lions have nipples on the bottoms of their paws which they use to suckle the cub.
Chinese lions, more friendly than fierce, are one of the most popular and permanent examples of Chinese art. They come in pairs to provide a perfect balance of yin and yang - the ideal company for each other, and were introduced into the imagery of Chinese Buddhism as a symbol for the totality of Buddhist law.

Few people in the West are aware that 500 years before Christ was born, a man lived in China whose teachings are uncannily similar to those of Jesus. His name was Mozi. The Chinese Philosopher may have been a disciple of Confucius. If so, he soon became his opponent.
The teachings of Jesus are very similar to Mozi's ideas.
Jesus may well have been a Jewish scholar who learned of the teachings of Mozi. Was Jesus copying Mozi? We don't know. What we do know is that Moism (Mohism) shares many parallels and similarities with Christianity as it is taught today.

Roofs are a very important part of Chinese architecture. Rooftops with sweeping slopes ending in upturned, projecting eaves and tiled corners, sometimes in several tiers, are a unique feature to the classical Chinese architecture.
The curve upward is a hydraulic device to throw the water further away fron the building. This a very clever design, but western Architects didn't use this type of device in buildings because it is labor and material intensive.
Chines rooftops, often decorated with ornaments and small sculptures, are beauty and pleasure, a practical thing doing a dull common every day utilitarian task. The magic and the practical, the real and the unreal, are welded together each doing its respective job.

Chinese shadow play is the ancient art of shadow puppetry, a form of entertainment using paper puppets whose shadows are projected onto a lit up backdrop to create the appearance of moving images.
The art of creating shadow puppets has a long history in China. According to one historical legend, the emperor Wu was greatly saddened after one of his favorite concubines died. So, several court officials created a puppet with hinged arms and legs using donkey leather and paint. They then lit an oil lamp to display her shadow, bringing her �back to life� to please emperor. The artists used a variety of dazzling colors to make shadow figures and props\' reflection on the illuminated, translucent backdrop screen more magnificent and sparkling. Then the love story was recorded in the book of �The History of the Han Dynasty�, and the Shadow Play began to become quite popular.
Shadow puppet play, also called sheep play and head play, a drama in which silhouettes are projected onto a white screen, first born about 2000 years ago, faces extinction in China. The precursor of modern movies is more and more replaced by TV and cinema. Today, the Chinese Shadow puppet, a profile of a character, as opposed to a 3-dimensional image, is a very popular collector\'s item. Museums in countries all over the world are eager to collect them, and tourists purchase chinese shadow puppets as souvenirs.

Over thousand years old Qibao Ancient Town near Shanghai, China, is ancient Chinese styled shopping lanes in between traditional river side houses. The narrow shopping lanes are always hectic and crowded with people snacking away on local specialities. It feels like Qibao is running a fair every day.
The Puhuitang river, which is running across town, brings a tranquil, authentic 'water town charm' over this old town.
If you step out of the crowd and stand on one of the Puhuitang River bridges, you will see the black roofed river side houses with their turn-up eaves mirroring in the water right under you - a scenery that draws me into an ancient water town daydream every time I visit.

Most of the historical buildings now standing in Zhujiajiao Ancient Town near Shanghai, China, were completed in the early 1900s, with some dating back to Ming and Qing dynasties. These buildings in this historic watertown can be divided into four major groups: religious buildings including temples, cathedrals and churches; civilian residences,commercial buildings and public buildings.
Yuanjin Chanyuan - also called Niannian Miao -, a Buddhist Temple at the cross between Caogang River and Pearl Stream, was constructed in 1341. It holds a statue of the Holy Mother of Chenzhou, therefore, it is also named the Empress' Temple. The temple is renowned for its Buddha statues, paintings and handwriting by famous chinese writers.

An ancient township with white walls and gray-tiled houses built on water southwest of Shanghai - this is Zhujiaji Ancient Town, sometimes called 'Pearl Stream.
Being one of the Yangtze River Delta Water Towns Zhujiaji was one of the largest commercial centers on the lower reaches of the Yangtze river during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911). That explains why there are so many buildings in the style of both eras.
The river quietly reflects the white walls, gray-tiled houses, bridges and the passing boats.
Visiting Zhujiaji means visiting a township back in the last century. Its peace and tranquility puts the mind at ease.

The Bund is an epitome of Shanghai's history and it symbolizes Shanghai. It got its name from a desolate beach outside the old Shanghai City.
Between 1840 into the 1930's, many foreign businesses snatched this area to establish concessions, banks, headquarters, consul houses and so on. Hence, Shanghai, China, a small seaside town one hundred years ago, became the largest city in Asia. It also earned the reputation of "The Oriental Wall Street".

If the building zone on the Bund, Shanghai, China, would be a gallery, the rest of the Bund would be a showroom.
When the sun rises in the east, the Bund is a place where people do exercises. During daytime, the old buildings blend beautifully with the scenery of the Huangpu River and the new Pudong area accross the river. When evening comes the Bund is bathed in city lights. A spectacular scene.
The Bund is like "an exhibition of buildings". Though mostly designed by foreign architects during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when overseas powers dominated Shanghai, the Bund’s allure is enduring.
