Point Cabrillo Light Station - Mendocino, CA

The Point Cabrillo Lighthouse in northern California cast its light over the craggy cliffs of the Mendocino coast for the first time in June 1909, and the still-working lighthouse has been carefully restored as part of the Point Cabrillo Light Station.
Now a state historic site, the light station welcomes day visitors. Tour the restored lighthouse, the Lightkeeper's Home and Museum, and visit the native Pomo Indians exhibit at the Farmhouse Visitor Center.
And after the day trippers leave, you have 300 acres of nature preserve all to yourself. Watch the boats and passing whales and dolphins, dazzling sunsets and then a starry sky with no city lights to interfere.

Tides of Battery Point Lighthouse - Northern CA

In May of 1855, Congress appropriated $15,000 for the construction of a lighthouse on an islet, which is connected to Battery Point (near Crescent City, northern California, United States) by an isthmus at low tide. It was one of the first lighthouses on the California coast.
With its exposed location atop a rocky mound, the lighthouse was often battered by storms. In 1964, it survived a tsunami caused by the strongest earthquake ever recorded in the northern hemisphere with a moment magnitude of 9.2. A series of waves generated by the earthquake raced south at a speed of nearly 600 m.p.h. and reached Crescent City around midnight with crests of up to twenty feet. Although Battery Point lighthouse survived the ordeal intact, the following year the modern beacon that replaced the Fresnel lens in the tower was switched off.
Today Battery Point Lighthouse operates as a private aid to navigation, and as a Museum. It is a very interesting and lovely area to visit; but be sure to walk across the isthmus at low tide, which is when it is very foggy, or you won't be able to get to or from the Island.

Yaquina Head Lighthouse - Newport, OR

Newport, Oregon which sits at the mouth of the Yaquina River, has two lighthouses. Yaquina Head Lighthouse is on the north side of the opening for Newport Bay and Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is on the south side.
Yaquina Head is a prominant headland projecting a little more than a kilometer into the Pacific. The full name of this beautiful place is 'Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area', the hightlight, of course, being the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, also known as Cape Foulweather Lighthouse. It took approximately one year, and over 370,000 bricks from San Francisco, to construct Yaquina Head Light, Oregons tallest lighthouse, which stands at an impressive 93 feet, with 110 steps for the determined visitor to conquer.
The lighthouse emits its own unique lighting pattern, 2 seconds on, 2 seconds off, 2 seconds on, 14 seconds off, 24 hours a day.
In 2002 Yaquina Head Light was used as the setting for the "Moesko Island Lighthouse" in the scary film 'The Ring'. It also appeared in 'Dead Man's Curve' (1998), 'Hysterical' (1983) and Nancy Drew: 'Pirates Cove' (1977).

Yaquina Lighthouses - Yaquina Head Lighthouse Western Oregon

The Yaquina Head Lighthouse, also known as the Cape Foulweather Lighthouse, is a lighthouse near Newport on the Oregon Coast of the United States near the mouth of the Yaquina River at Yaquina Head.
Yaquina Head Light stands 162 feet above sea level; its 93-foot-high tower is the tallest on the Oregon coast. It is the only lighthouse in the state in which the living quarters are housed in the same building as the light. Only a few of this type were built on the entire Pacific Coast. And it is the only Oregon Lighthouse with a marble floor. It still uses its original 1868 French-made Fixed Fresnel lens; visible 19 miles (31 km) out to sea.
The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is beautiful, and the views from the top are spectacular. But don't stop with the lighthouse. On the way to or from the light, take one of the trails down to the water, where you will find a unique cobble beach, and fascinating tidepools with colorful starfish and anemones, crabs and mussels, seals sunning themselves on rocks just a stone's throw from where you are. And if you are lucky, you might even spot a whale or massive golden eagles with binoculars.

Yaquina Lighthouses - Yaquina Bay Lighthouse Oregon

'Situated at Yaquina, is an old deserted lighthouse. Its weather-beaten walls are wrapped in mystery. On an afternoon when the fog comes drifting in, it is the loneliest place in the world.'
So begins Lischen Miller's tale, 'The Haunted Lighthouse,' published in an 1899 issue of Pacific Monthly.
The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, a charming two-story clapboard structure, is located on a hill overlooking the northern side of the entrance to Yaquina Bay. It was deserted a mere three years after its light was first lit in 1871, and ever since has been the scene for many a ghostly tale.
Today Yaquina Bay Light is in excellent condition and furnished with period pieces. If you take a tour, you will most likely hear a ghost tale or two.

Oregon's Seacoast Lighthouses - Yaquina Bay Lighthouse - Old and New

Yaquina Bay State Park is located in Newport at the north end of Yaquina Bay near its outlet to the Pacific Ocean. The bluff is forested with spruce and pine, but the real star is the Historic Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, built in 1871. This piece of Oregon's history sits atop a bluff at the mouth of the Yaquina River.
Yaquina Bay Light is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It is the only existing Oregon lighthouse with the living quarters attached, and the only historic wooden Oregon lighthouse still standing.
On December 7, 1996 Yaquina Bay Lightstation was officially restored as a privately maintained aid to navigation.

North Head Lighthouse - Graveyard of the Pacific - Ilwaco WA

Tucked behind Cape Disappointment at the mouth of the Columbia River Ilwaco, Washington sits at the confluence of history and cultures.
Before there were lighthouses on the the Long Beach Peninsula, ships bound for Portland and Astoria navigated their way through the high waves and shifting sandbars, focusing on fluttering white flags and notched trees along the shoreline by day and flickering signal fires by night. These methods were crude at best and, despite heroic efforts, the sea offshore the Peninsula became known as 'The Graveyard of the Pacific'.
Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, built in 1856, helped to secure the coast. However, ships approaching the Columbia River from the north could not see the Cape Disappointment Light until it was too late to enter the river channel.
That's why, in 1898, North Head Lighthouse was added at Beard's Hollow.
Walk right up to North Head's 65 feet tall lighthouse tower, a very pleasant and serene place. Hear the history of this pituresque century-old lighthouse as you make the trip to the top, and enjoy the breath taking panoramic view of the Peninsula and Pacific Ocean.

North Head Lighthouse - Ilwaco on Washington's Southwest Coast

2 miles south of Ilwaco, Washington, just north of the Washington/Oregon border lies Cape Disappointment State Park, home to two lighthouses: Cape Disappointment Lighthouse (1856) and North Head Lighthouse (1898) at Beard's Hollow.
North Head is the windiest lighthouse area on the West Coast and the second windiest in the nation. Winds of 120 miles per hour have been recorded at the site. The lighthouse itself is only sixty-five feet tall, but it sits on a bluff 130 feet high overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The light of its modern marine style beacon, which is still in use today, is visible 17 miles out to sea.
North Head Light is one of the oldest, most picturesque lighthouses on the Pacific Coast.

Take a mild coastal climate, which rarely freezes in winter or goes above 80 degrees in summer, add a good dose of rain (say 12 feet (3,50 meter) or so a year), add some summer fog and you have the ingredients for a rare temperate rain forest.
With so few temperate rain forests in the world, those found in the Pacific Northwest, e.g. in Washington's Olympic National Park, take on a very special role as a valuable ecosystem.
Quinault temperate rainforest is moist enough that mosses and fungi can grow on the trunks of trees.
The fungi we see are only the tip of the iceberg; most of the fungus consists of tiny strands (hyphae) spreading through the wood or the soil. Only when it is time for reproduction does the fungus produce a fruiting body, which appears on the surface for the sole purpose of propagating spores to spread the fungus to new areas.

Quinault Valley Olympic Peninsula WA - Exposed Root Structure of a Giant Tree

Quinault in the valley formed by the Quinault River and Lake Quinault on the Olympic Peninsula in the State of Washington is called the "Valley of the Rain Forest Giants". The largest trees in the World outside of California's Redwoods are located in this valley. Record size Western Red Cedar, Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock, Alaskan Cedar and Mountain Hemlock are found in the forest as well as five of the top ten largest Douglas-firs.

Solitude, serenity, beauty, peacefulness and myself. These are some of the things I find in Quinault.The silence of a place so padded with mosses, fringed by ferns, flanked by giant trees and roots is almost complete. This isolated area is one of my all-time favorite places.

To see what burled trees along the Olympic shoreline look like look for the odd spruce burls in the mysterious spruce burl forests at the Beach 1 trail near Kalaloch. They rival the redwood burls seen in California's dense redwood forests.
No one is sure what causes these strange bulge-like burls in the area's Sitka spruce population - perhaps some kind of rare virus or just a reaction to the constant barrage of salty sea spray.
The trees along Beach One don�t seem to mind: Many of them are hundreds of years old and reach up 125 feet into the coastal canopy.

Life at the Top - Duncan Cedar Olympic National Park, WA

The 178 feet tall Duncan Cedar, located near Nolan Creek south of the Hoh River in Washington State, is known as one of the biggest western red cedar trees ever found.
The "grandfather tree" shoots above the surrounding forest, its bare exterior aged to a silver gray over its 1,000year life. The tall trunk is stark, with some fresh growth, mixed with plants using the ancient cedar as a host, stretching out from its top like a patch of hair atop an elderly man.

Western Red Cedar - Thuja plicata - Olympic National Park, WA

If the loggers who spared the Duncan Memorial tree hoped the tree would show their hearts were in the right place, they knew little about trees.
Of course the giant western red cedar tree could not survive the fierce winds of the clearcut. First the mosses and lichens, then the tree itself, began to die. And there it stands today: A bleached skeleton with few living branches.
There is a message there that one can not miss: Imagine trying to preserve this king of the forest, when all his kingdom lies in ruins. Soon Duncan Cedar's bones, too, will lie at Nolan Creek.

Long Views - Giant Western Red Cedar Olympic National Park, WA

Naming a tree as the tallest adds a bit of romance, lore and human scale to the coastal forests that carpet the West End. The Duncan Cedar's name tells a story that reflects the lifestyle of the logging community found at Forks. Three loggers, the brothers Doug, Ed and Wiley Duncan, were felling trees on state land in the forest south of the Hoh River in Washington State when they found this giant western red cedar. They went out of their way to save this towering tree. A comment from Wiley Duncan sums up why. He said: "We may have cut bigger trees, but this one is truly a monarch." The effort of the Duncan brothers resulted in the huge tree being skipped by the loggers.

A Remarkable Tree - Duncan Western Red Cedar Olympic National Park, WA

The Duncan Cedar's immense base with its many muscular twists and turns is remarkable. Stepping back and sizing up the tree, the comparatively short life span of a human comes to mind, for the Duncan Cedar began its life over a millennium ago.
The tree was here alive and growing in the quiet forest south of Forks, WA at a time when the only way to knock down a tree was slamming a rock axe against thick wood after propitiation of the tree's spirits and those of the surrounding trees

The Hall of Mosses in Olympic National Park's Hoh Rain Forest in Washington is a fascinating, etheral scenery that even a tripping Tolkien couldn't have invented.
Diamond drips of moisture cling to the tips of leaves on trees of epic heights, and a soft drizzle eases from a thick quilt of clouds overhead. Old-man's beard drips from branches above like corduroy fringe, while licorice ferns and lettuce lichens overwhelm the massive fallen trunks of maple and Sitka spruce. Cloaked and draped in green, and glazed with moisture, every surface is soft and wet and alive with something - or decaying to make way for the next generation of life in the Hoh.

A Rack of Antlers - Roosevelt Elk - Olympic National Park, WA

The name "elk" is a bit confusing. Both, elk and moose, refer to Alces alces. In North America, it's called the moose, while in Europe it's the elk.
In North America, elk refers to Cervus elaphus, also known as the wapiti. In Europe, this same animal is known as the red deer.
Roosevelt elks are Olympic National Park's most beautiful and iconic animal. Also known as Olympic elk and Rain Forest Elk, they are the largest of the four surviving subspecies of elk in North America. They live in the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest. The desire to protect the elk was one of the primary driving forces behind the establishment of the Mount Olympus National Monument (later Olympic National Park).
