Before 1990, Pudong was mainly farmland and countryside. In 1993, the Chinese government decided to turn the area into a Special Economic Zone and the western tip of the Pudong district was designated to be the new financial hub of modern China called the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone.
Several landmark buildings were constructed during the 1990s to raise the image and awareness of Shanghai and China. These include the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Jin Mao Building, the Shanghai World Financial Centre Tower, and many more.

Shanghai PUDONG - Today denser than yesterday but less than tomorrow
Located in the east of Shanghai, Pudong New Area lies at the mid-point of China's coastline where the Yangtze River intersects with the sea.
It is a land of concrete, steel and glass, where high rises and cargo cranes and the green netting of construction dominate the skyline. Pudong is a new animal, a metropolis in the making, from scratch, with temples of finance, five-star hotels and upscale office buildings.

Lujiazui - Pudong Shanghai
As late as 1990, Pudong, Shanghai was little more than rice paddies. In the recent decades of China's monumental modernization, however, the former farmland of Pudong now stands, built up from scratch, as a world hopping travel destination and financial hub. It is filled with skyscrapers and expensive drinks - and, thankfully, a day's worth of superb museums.

Exquisite Jade Rock - Yu Garden - Shanghai
Yuyuan Garden ("Yu Garden"), located in the center of the Old City in Shanghai, China, is considered one of the most finest Chinese gardens in the region.
One of the true treasures of Yuyuan Garden is the Exquisite Jade Rock. The rock is 3.3 meters (~ 10.8 feet) in height and has 72 holes. What is interesting about this white jade rock is that if you burn a joss stick just below the rock, the smoke will magically float out from all of the holes. Similarly, when you pour water into the rock from top, the water will flow out from each hole creating a spectacular sight to see.

Yu Gardens - A Classic Chinese garden in Shanghai
The Yu Gardens, also known as the Yu Yuan Garden, is likely the most celebrated classical Chinese garden in Shanghai. Yu Yuan Garden was first built in 1559 and it took workers almost 20 years to complete.
Yu Gardens' landscape seems to wind on forever - the gardens are purposefully designed to distort space and distance. Emblematic of the gardening style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Yu Garden is a maze of pavilions, grottoes, lotus ponds, and rickety bridges crossing lazy streams.

Massive upturned eaves - Yuyuan Garden Shanghai China
Huxinting Tea House
Beautiful buildings with massive upturned eaves dominate the Yu Garden skyline in Shanghai, China. Built between 1559 and 1577, this typical southern-style Chinese garden was destroyed several times and later restored to its former glory.
One defining feature of China's southern gardens is the carefully created sense of space within small confines using narrow lanes, strategically placed partitions and windows that provide frames for portrait views.

Qibao Ancient Town - A peek into the past of Shanghai
Shanghai's very own water town, Qibao Ancient Town, only 18 kilometers from downtown Shanghai, was built in the Five Dynasties Period around 1000 years ago.
To truly enjoy the old-style Chinese-feel of Qi Bao, grab yourself a bag of Qibao's famous juqibao fangzheng gao (a steamed pastry made of glutinous rice with sweet bean paste, best eaten hot) for breakfast, and step into the tranquility of a boat ride down the canals during the early morning hours.

Shanghai - Paris of the East
To accommodate an increasing density of occupants in the city of Shanghai in east China on the mouth of Yangtze River old towns are flattened for new high-rises and skyscrapers. With 22 million residents, there is little space for parks and green spaces, and all the high-density living contributes to China’s pollution problems.
Once known as the Paris of the East, Shanghai faces major dilemmas that approach the city as population and mass urbanization grows endlessly.

Traffic in Qibao - Shanghai's local ancient water town
While there are quite a few water towns in the greater Shanghai area, the closest one to central Shanghai and relatively within town, is Qibao.
Wide canals, picturesque Chinese houses, narrow bridges, bustling old shops and authentic chinese fishing boats ... this is Qi Bao, and it feels like being back in "Old" China again

Mao is in every Chinese pocket
China was the first country that developed paper currency (in the Tang Dynasty during the 7th century), and the perception of banknotes as money has evolved over time.
In 1023 the S'ung dynasty (Song dynasty) cautiously issued true-paper money, in small amounts in a limited area good for a specific time period. The notes would be redeemed after three years, to be replaced by new notes.
The most famous Chinese issuer of paper money was probably Kublai Khan, the Mongol who ruled the Chinese empire in the 13th century. Kublai Khan established currency credibility by decreeing that his paper money must be accepted by traders on pain of death. As further enforcment of his mandate, he confiscated all gold and silver, even if it was brought in by foreign traders. Marco Polo was impressed by the efficiency of the Chinese system, as he chronicles in his "The Travels of Marco Polo" ("Il Milione").
Today's Chinese currency is the "Renminbi" which translates to the "people's currency". The China dollar is made up of "yuan", which is often called "kuai", and "jiao" which is often called "mao".
And even in China it's the same old story when it comes to money: The rich want to keep the money while workers don't have enough of it.
