Lone Cypress - The icon of Pebble Beach California

The old cypress, sitting on a rocky outcropping at Spanish Bay near Monterey, Carmel and Pebble Beach along the 17 Mile Drive on the Monterey Peninsular, CA, was a sapling when the Spanish named Monterey the capital of Baja (lower) and Alta (upper) California. The first reported reference to the tree in the Monterey Cypress (newspaper) on January 19, 1889 was written by R. Fitch. "Rounding a short curve on the beach, we approach Cypress Point, the boldest headland on the peninsula of Monterey. Down almost to the water grows the cypress, and on the extreme point a solitary tree has sunk its roots in the crevices of the wave-washed rock, and defies the battle of the elements that rage about it during the storms of winter."
The tree has been photographed by Ansel Adams and Edward Weston and painted by many, merely to place the viewer on this stunning stretch of coastline between Monterey and Big Sur. This lone cypress, one of 10 most magnificent trees in the world, is evocative because of its age, setting, and the way in which it has been salt pruned by the winds coming off the Pacific Ocean. It is amazing that this old cypress is still alive right on the rock. To me, it represents strength and how you can endure a lot if you have a strong foundation.
Access to the cypress tree is closed. 250 years old, it is now supported by cables with a hope that it will live to its birthday #300.
Any golfer will recognize this symbolic tree in its picturesque location, and if not, this person should not be called a golfer. No, I did not have $1,000 laying around to play a round of golf there, but I did spend a great day in the area and captured this landscape at sunset - visible fog is already rolling in in the distant background.

Big Four Building Sacramento California

Over the last 20 years, the Old Sacramento Historic District has grown and matured into a well-recognized town within a city.
The combined Huntington, Hopkins & Company Hardware Store and Stanford Brothers Warehouse, which together comprise the "Big Four Building," and the adjacent Nathaniel Dingley Steam Coffee & Spice Mill building play important roles in showcasing Sacramento's early railroad and commercial heritage.
The 'Big Four Building' was constructed through the joint effort of California's railroad pioneers: Collis Huntington, Mark Hopkins, Leland Stanford and Charles Crocker, known as The Big Four. It was home to offices of these four people. The house was built in 1852, destroyed in 1963 (decorative elements and building materials were set aside for future use), and rebuilt in 1965 by using the original elements.

Bring me men to match my mountains

California's capital city, Sacramento, has played many roles over time, including Gold Rush boomtown, railroad terminus, regional industrial center, and seat of state government. These varied roles meant dramatic changes as the city grew outward and upward.
The State Office Building No 1 is one of a symmetrical pair of monumental buildings designed in the Beaux Arts tradition to serve as an extension of the State Capitol and help prevent key State department functions from leaving Sacramento for San Francisco. In addition to the quality of its architectural design, its associated ornament exhibits a high degree of artistic value and craftsmanship worthy of honoring California's rich historical heritage.

The words "Bring me men to match my mountains" are part of a poem, "The Coming American," written in 1894 by Sam Walter Foss.
Bring me men to match my mountains
Bring me men to match my plains
Men with empires in their purpose
And new eras in their brains

Edinburgh on a Winter's Day

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, a city steeped in more than 900 years of battle for autonomy that has made it one of Europe's most diverse ethnic populations and vibrant cultural scenes. It is difficult to walk the hallowed streets of Edinburgh without stumbling across a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wrap up and take a bracing walk to feast your eyes on Edinburgh's panorama from Edinburgh Castle's Esplanade. Beneath you, a cityscape of steeples unfolds. Edinburgh is a magical city on any given day, but the damp winter weather makes the city especially atmospheric - frosty, misty mornings and wonderfully crisp invigorating sunshine during the day. Arage Edinburgh temperatures hover around 5 degrees C in December, January and February, but extremely cold days are rare.
Edinburgh has a lot to offer to the winter traveler besides its upside-down days (from the angle of the midmorning sun you'd think it was setting). For one thing, the city belongs to itself in the colder months. If you listen you'll note mainly the Scottish burr, with an occasional voice from below the border. Yours may be the only American accent you hear in a weeklong stay.

Golden Gate Bridge - Nothing equals its majesty

The Golden Gate Strait is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The dream of spanning the Golden Gate Strait had been around for well over a century before the Golden Gate Bridge opened to traffic on May 28, 1937. The color of the bridge is International Orange, and was chosen in part because of its visibility in the fog.
Made in New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania and shipped through the Panama Canal, 83,000 tons (75,293,000 kg) of steel were used to build the bridge. The two main cables passing over the tops of the two main towers are secured in concrete anchorages at each end. Each cable weighs 11,000 tons and is made of 27,572 strands of wire. There are 80,000 miles (129,000 km) of wire in the two main cables, and it took over six months to spin them. The amount of concrete used on the bridge would be sufficient to build two 10-foot-wide sidewalks from Chicago to Omaha.
The list of superlatives goes on and on.
One of the most interesting Golden Gate Bridge facts is that only eleven workers died during construction, a new safety record for the time. In the 1930s, bridge builders expected 1 fatality per $1 million in construction costs, and builders expected 35 people to die while building the Golden Gate Bridge. One of the bridge's safety innovations was a net suspended under the floor. This net saved the lives of 19 men during construction, and they are often called the members of the "Half Way to Hell Club."
On opening day in 1937 the San Francisco Chronicle refered to the Golden Gate Bridge as "A thirty-five million dollar steel harp!" The cost to construct a new Golden Gate Bridge would be approximately $1.2 billion in 2003 dollars.

Scottish Moo Coo - Scottish Highland cattle

Scottish Highland cattle are the oldest registered breed of cattle with a Herd Book being published in 1885. They lived for centuries in the rugged remote Scottish Highlands. The extremely harsh conditions created a process of natural selection, where only the fittest and most adaptable animals survived to carry on the breed.
They have a long, close history of living with humans. Early Scots would keep the cows downstairs to provide warmth for the family on the second story and to make sure the neighbors didn't help themselves to the family's wealth. Regardless of where they are located today, Highland cattle can always trace their ancestry to Scotland.
Scotch Highland Cattle seem to enjoy harsh conditions in which many other breeds would perish. It is not unusual to see Highlands grazing a day or two after a winter storm with snow still melting off their backs. Their double coat of hair (long, coarse, outer layer and soft wooly inner layer) means that the animals do not have to produce a layer of fat to stay warm.
The Scottish Moo Coo is calm, does not stress easily, and is easy to work with despite its long horns. The horns are used primarily for knocking down brush to graze on, predator control and scratching. Horns on females are generally upswept and finer textured than are the males. Male horns are more forward pointing and massive. Cows are noted for being highly devoted and protective mothers.
Highlands eat what other cattle pass by ... and get fat on it! Highlander cows will average 900-1200 pounds when mature. Bulls will average from 1500 to 2000 pounds. Unlike other breeds, they are slow maturing which makes their meat fine textured, succulent, exceptionally tender and of high flavour.
The British Royal family keeps a large herd of Highlands at Balmoral Castle, Scotland, and considers them their beef animal of choice. A rare opportunity for commoners to eat like royalty.

Till Eulenspiegel - The Merry Prankster

Till Eulenspiegel was a 14th Century peasant whose pranks and drollness were the subject of widespread tales. The name Eulenspiegel literally means "owl glass" or "owl mirror". These devices also appear on Eulenspiegel's gravestone in Mölln in Schleswig Holstein, Germany. Metaphorically his name has been interpreted as "wise reflection," as Eulenspiegel was widely understood to be holding up a mirror by which society could judge itself.
Till's pranks were harmless, and their effect was soon gone. His artful shrewdness generally depended on a pun. But Eulenspiegel was able to victimize anyone, innocent or deserving. He was a mischief maker bent on deceit. While he did trick the dishonest, harsh, cruel, stupid, conceited, obnoxious, boring and pretentious - in short, the deserving - he also preyed on the naive, the gullible and the innocent. His tales are often explained as learned reflections on society, religion, education and political systems of the day. By satirizing and making fun of these institutions while taking advantage of their members, his tales were a popular source of laughter and relief from the uncertainty of everyday life.
It is safe to say that Eulenspiegel was a unique, complex and mysterious character, not at all what we infer from the title of Richard Strauss' symphonic poem, "Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks." He died in 1350 of the Black Death. Following ancient custom, his body had been placed in a casket formed by the hollowed out trunk of a tree. As the tree was being lowered on two ropes into his grave, the rope at his feet broke, and the tree fell into the grave, leaving Eulenspiegel standing upright. It was quickly agreed, "Let him stand. As he was odd while he lived, he ought to be odd in death too." The grave was closed with Till Eulenspiegel standing upright. A specially carved gravestone, showing an owl clutching a mirror and providing his epitaph, was placed on his grave.
In the early 1500's the tales of Eulenspiegel were printed in one or more Early New High German language versions; the sole surviving copy is in the British Library, London. Often vulgar and scatological, both in language and story device, they were wildly popular in the "fool's literature" of 16th century. Everyone who could read was ready for a laugh, particularly when it came at someone else's expense. The books have been translated, often in mutilated versions, into many languages. The full narrative of Eulenspiegel's adventures, of which there are 95, was translated to English by Paul Oppenheimer. However, Oppenheimer's translation of the original tales of Tyl Eulenspiegel reveals something quite unexpected: 16th century humor, reflecting the social and moral climate of the times, seems harsh, unforgiving, and hurtful.

Colorado State Capitol Building Denver CO

Built in the 1890's, the Colorado State Capitol building with its large pillars is composed of Colorado white granite. It is a key feature in the Denver skyline because of its bell-shaped dome, plated with 200 ounces of 24 karat gold. The gold plated dome commemorates Colorado's Gold Rush days and the early pioneers and miners who helped build this great state.
The inside of the capitol building is a cacophony of brilliant brass and stained glass, but the really priceless building material used inside is Colorado Rose onyx, commonly called Beulah Red Marble, a rare stone found near Beulah, Colo. The entire world's supply of Colorado Rose onyx went into the Capitol. It cannot be replaced - not at any price.
Denver, also called 'Mile High City', really is exactly one mile high. The exact elevation of 5,280 feet (1 mile) above sea level is maked by a round brass cap embedded in the western entrance stairs of the State Capitol.
The Colorado State Capitol Building in Denver is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful state capitol buildings in the United States. If you get the chance, head up to the observation deck and enjoy a spectacular view of Denver and the Rocky Mountains in the distance. State law prohibits building any structure that would block the view of the Rockies from the State Capitol.

Headless Horseman

The legend of the Headless Horseman begins in Sleepy Hollow, a real community located near North Tarrytown, New York. The area is full of ghost stories including the one about the Headless Horseman, a dark and shadowy figure.
Its said that even in modern times the Headless Horseman rides, frightening motorists along Canton's rural roads causing fear-based heart attacks or a startled driver to veer into a ditch to avoid hitting the frantic phantom. Survivors say that the beams of their car's headlights shone right through horse and rider, making them almost invisible, until, suddenly, car and horseman seemed about to collide.

The Scream

Relief (from Italian, rilievare: to raise) is a sculptural technique. This technique is quite ancient, and it has been used independently in many cultures from Mesoamerica to India. It is believed to have pre-dated sculpture, as it is easier to create than a free-standing full-figure.
Contemporary neo-classical reliefs can be found on the façades and in interiors of numerous buildings in many nations of the world. Many are in classical Roman or Greek style while others reflect a more natural approach to form, even some in an unfinished style reminiscent of Michelangelo's later sculptures.
Many beautiful relief sculptures can be found on front façades on the most beautiful burgher houses in Munich, Germany.
The face in this photograph so sad - it hurts to look at it. It screams a sculpted language we can never hear ...

Hoover Dam Reservoir - Architecture on a grand scale

Hoover Dam, an engineering and architectural marvel, spans the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada, some 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas Nevada. The dam, a massive curved wall, is 726 feet high, 45 feet thick at the top and 660 feet at the bottom, and is larger than the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt. It was the tallest dam in the world when it was completet in 1935, and remained the largest producer of hydroelectric power in the world until 1948.
Named for Herbert Hoover, 31st president of the United States, Hoover Dam is filled with 3.25 million cubic yards of concrete, enough to pave a strip 16 feet wide and 8 inches thick from San Francisco to New York City. If the heat produced by the curing concrete could have been concentrated in a baking oven, it could have baked 500,000 loaves of bread per day for three years. The water on the lake side is more than 500 feet deep, and the lake holds a total of 10 trillion or so gallons of water - enough to cover a state like Connecticut 10 feet deep.
Today Hoover Dam is no longer the tallest, the largest by volume or the largest hydroelectric power producer, but remains among the biggest and best-known dams in the world. All its architecture is on a grand scale, and the design has beautiful Art Deco elements, unusual in an engineering project.
Water levels are low in reservoirs all over the parched American West, but in many areas, the amount of water being used is no greater than the amount that evaporates.

Bodie California - A Trip Back In Time

The road to Bodie, California, is right in the middle of nowhere, it's just you and the mountains surrounding you. It goes for about 9 miles on a very bumpy asphalt road, then you'll reach a sign warning you about very rough conditions for the next 3 miles. And at the end of this stretch you'll have to leave your car here and go on by foot for another 2 miles.
The walk, however, is very rewarding. After some hills the landscape opens and gives a spectacular view on the ghost town. It is amazing to see how many people once lived in the middle of nowhere, and what it was like to be in the wild west during America's gold rush time. At its peak, Bodie had a population of about 10,000 people. Even for someone who is not all that interested in American westerns, gold mining etc., it is a fancinating place with a lot of history.
Going to Bodie brings you back a hundred years. The town is in pretty good condition for the rough Sierra Nevada climate.

Chicago Theatre - A classic Chicago landmark

The Chicago Theatre at 175 North State Street in Chicago, IL, famous for its iconic, six story-high "C-H-I-C-A-G-O" sign and its 29-rank Wurlitzer theater pipe organ, opened its doors on October 26th, 1921 and was quickly dubbed the "Wonder Theatre of the World."
The 3,600 seat auditorium, that stands seven stories high and more than one half of a city block wide, hosts performances by world renown musicians, comedians, acrobats and theater groups. Not only is it a beautiful theater with some really ornate designs on the ceiling, ornate columns, a grand staircase and beautiful stained glass windows, but the sound quality is exceptionally balanced; no weird echos, no reflections, no mysterious buzzing. Just crisp, clean, loudness. And there isn't a 'bad seat' in the house.
Walking through the theater's doors makes one feel small but at the same time very special.

Wrigley Building Chicago Illinois

Chicago's iconic Wrigley Building, known for its soaring clock tower, sparkling white terra-cotta cladding, well-proportioned architecture and nighttime lighting, has been home to the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. for nearly a hundred years. It is one of the most famous Chicago landmarks, celebrated in numerous movies, on postcards and in songs like "My Kind of Town".
Built in the early 1920s by the founder of the famous Wrigley's chewing gum company, the gleaming structure, modeled after the Seville Cathedral’s Giralda Tower in Spain, is a graceful synthesis of diverse stylistic sources (Spanish, Renaissance, French and Chicago School). As "The Gateway to the Magnificent Mile," the building sits directly across from its famous counterpart, the Tribune Tower, just north of the Chicago River on Michigan Avenue.
This is Chicago's jewel, like a resplendent white diamond that appears as a vision when it's first in your sights - an unforgettable site — day and night — for Chicago residents and visitors. It takes your breath away.

Baby it's cold outside

The coldest winter in 30 years was recorded across many parts of the US during the 2010-2011 winter.
Eastern parts of the US plunged to a record -50F with the Northeast of the US also seeing records broken. Temperatures were also largely below normal averages for Chicago, New Orleans, and Minneapolis. Snowstorms shattered New York City in December 2010 and January 2011 to become the snowiest January ever recorded.
I can imagine that millions of people prayed for global warming as the cold spell held its tight grip on the Planet.
