Ravine State Gardens Palatka Florida

Ravine Gardens State Park north of Salt Creek in the sprawling town of Palatka in Florida, isn't a traditional plot. The ravine's architect is erosion, which over eons collapsed a sandy bluff near the St. Johns River into something odd for the Sunshine State � a 120-foot-deep ravine.

Ravine Gardens was built by the Works Progress Administration (C.W.A.) in 1933. It consists of 59 acres of trees, trails, suspension bridges, creeks and quiet beauty. A 1.8 mile loop drive around the upper portion of the ravine provides an overview of the gardens. The formal garden area has rustic stone walls, walks and and terraces. However, to thoroughly enjoy the beautiful gardens - take a walk on one of the trails. There are not many places that can be considered a strenuous climb in the flat State of Florida, but the Ravine State Gardens can give folks accustomed to hiking in mountainous areas a good workout. So take it slow! And the two long suspension bridges spanning the ravine are fun to walk across.

Ravine Gardens State Park would be a great sight for filming jungle adventure or dinosaur movies. It's not Disney but it's so much more - a horticultural haven for both Palatka and Putnam County.

De Leon Springs - Classic Old Florida

Ever wanted to swim in a natural spring? This is your chance to swim, dine, picnic, stroll classic Old Florida. Native Americans visited and used these second-magnitude springs as long as 6,000 years ago.

Ponce de Leon Springs State Park central Florida is beautiful and picturesque. You'll see manatees eating in the river while river otters are fishing and playing in the early morning mist that is rising from the river. There are large turtles in the spring and birds of several varieties will entertained you. If you admire the cypress swamps, here you have a chance to actually walk around in one, or startle a small deer near monkey island. De Leon Springs is a wonderful, quiet, wildlife experience.
Cook your own pancakes on the griddle that is part of the table in front of you in the rustic and atmospheric Sugar Mill, where they grind their own flour.

I recommend De Leon Springs State Park to anyone who wants to see a part of Florida that isn't part of the beach or theme park scene.

Teddy Bear Ridin' On

Mostly when you hear about motorcycle riders, it's negative; bad news, but there's a huge community of many clubs made up of good people, who do positive things for the community. These bikers are the most engaging and charming people - they bring something soft and meaningful to patients young and old to enjoy.

Many rugged bikers, easy riders and motorcycle mamas tool down the road with teddy bears strapped to their Yamahas, Harley-Davidsons and Suzukis. They are ordinary people, professionals and housewives, machinists and gardeners, full-time students and part-time caregivers. They travel thousands of miles to participate in Teddy Bear Runs to bring hope and love to kids who have lost their toys and possessions in fires, witness domestic violence in their homes and who are sick in emergency rooms and in hospitals. It's a great way to help out and do things for people that need a little more than what some of the other folks have.

I have not met more charitable people than motorcyclists. They are always enthusiastic to ride their machines for one good cause or another, donating their hard-earned money just to ride.

Cypress Trees - Nature's Relics

Cypress Trees dominate Florida's forested wetlands and are very important to the state's ecology and economic history. They are conifers in the "Taxodiaceae" family, often called bald cypress. Cypresses can live for hundreds of years. Some old-growth trees in Florida are over 500 years old.

Cypressess tend to grow in forested wetlands, along streams and rivers, in spring runs and ponds, and in places with still or slow-moving water. The Cypress known for it's "knees". Some say the "knees" provide oxygen to the roots, and also anchor and support the tree in an unstable environment. Some "knees" are reported to be up to 12 feet tall.

Geologists believe that cypress trees have been growing in the State for about 6,500 years. However, in the first part of the 20th century, logging removed most of the large old-growth cypress iin virtually all the swamps of Florida. At one time these swaps were cypress forests. The trees were 150 to 1500 years old at the time of harvest. Today new growth cypresses have less decay-resistant hardwood and do not have the natural pest resistance that was found in old-growth cypress.

Many of the Florida's natural areas offer the chance to take in views of this unique tree. It is the perfect tree for sun-kissed Florida.

Silver River Colors

The seven-mile run of the Silver River, from the outflow of the big spring to a confluence with the Ocklawaha River, is one of the most beautiful stretches of wilderness river in Florida.

At a flow rate of about 3 miles per hour, the Silver River provides a breathtaking scenic experience. If you have sunglasses with polarizing lenses, you'll be able to look right through the clear water to observe turtles, garfish, big bass and many other freshwater creatures. And don't overlook the grasses and other plants that live underwater. As you drift, look for hardwood trees, a wide variety of shrubs and sabal palms on the banks, a number of aquatic plants along the river's edge, basking alligators on the banks and many other varieties of wildlife.

The Silver river is "Florida's primo spring run." Grab your camera, your binoculars and some drinking water, and treat yourself to a magnificent day on a carefully preserved and protected stretch of one of the most unusual rivers in the world. It's one of the best day-long wild adventures Florida has to offer.

Shipwreck Silver Springs Florida

No doubt, Disney reigns in Florida. But there is an entire world of beautiful places outside of Orlando where nature is the focus and the pace is much more relaxed. One of these places is Silver Springs near Ocala in Central Florida, where Johnny Weismuller filmed the Tarzan movies and Sean Connery starred as James Bond in "Thunderball" and "Never Say Never."

Silver Springs is a magnitude 1 spring that pumps out 550 million gallons of sparkling-clear water every day, enough to supply the entire city of New York. The spring feeds the Silver Springs river, with deep jungle on each side and forests of grass beds waving underwater. Silver Springs is known for its clear, deep water, aquatic life, and wild Rhesus monkeys, sunning turtles, unusual water fowl and alligators living along the river banks.

In October 2013 the Silver River Park will become part of the Florida State Park system to ensure that the river's unaltered grandeur of nature is preserved for the generations to come.

Silver River Florida

Silver Springs, one of the largest of Florida's 33 first-magnitude springs, is made up of a group of springs that occur in the headwaters, coves, and edges of the Silver River. The Silver River is the largest tributary on the Ocklawaha River. The natural beauty and naturally crystal-clear waters of Silver Springs have attracted visitors from around the world since the mid-19th century.

The Silver River and its springs are in Silver River State Park near Ocala, where access for canoeing and kayaking up to the springs is possible.
It is a beautiful river to kayak. The water is unbelievable clear and deep in some places. There is so much to see: Fish and alligators, wildlife and indigenous plants, flowers, trees ... And there are spots where you can pull over, tie off your boat, and swim in the beautiful, clear, cold water.
Boating down the Silver River to Silver Springs to see see the real Florida is a wonderful journey.

Florida Silver Springs River

One of the largest artesian springs ever discovered, Silver Springs is the primary source of Florida's stunning Silver River. The spring and river are located on the outskirts of Ocala, Florida. A beautiful 5,000 acre preserve that adjoins Silver Springs encompasses the river. Silver River State Park offers a museum, hiking trails, canoe access, cabins, camping and a historic farm complex.

The main spring at Silver Springs produces around 550 million gallons of water a day and is noted both for its depth and crystal clarity. It is actually one of a series of springs
that feed the Silver River, which is itself a tributary of the Ocklawaha and through it of the St. Johns. At least 24 other springs join with the main one in feeding the Silver River. Many of these can be found along the river as it flows through Silver River State Park.

Silver Springs was described in glowing terms in a widely read magazine article in 1870 and it was not long before tourists flooded into Ocala to see the natural wonder. Paddlewheel steamboats made their way up the Silver River to the main spring and in the 1880s railroad cars began bringing even more tourists. Silver Springs and the Silver River have been tourist attractions ever since.

Did I ever tell you

Burial is one of the oldest of human rituals. From simple stone dolmens to the glory of the pyramids, humans have spent a lot of time and energy providing the deceased with a decent send-off. Flowers, flags, statues and figurines are the final gifts family members give to their departed. To pick out a gravestone for someone that we love, is the last gift we can give them, and often people chose something that really represents the person that has passed and how he lived his life, so that, when we visit their burial site, our spirits are touched even if we did not know the person who lied down there. These are the kind of markers that make us feel some of the pain the ones who were left behind must have felt.

While cemeteries are often only visited after a loved one has passed, they not only serve as important places to mourn. A cemetery is often filled with artistic sculptures that leave us with questions about our own mortality and our relationship with death. Graveyard monuments, headstones,sculptures and figurines stir our imagination and powerful emotions, and, with the help of composition and lighting, some of these century old statues seem stunningly alive. There is an inherent fascination in cemeteries. The gravestones are so varied, and some of them are quite old and tell a rich history.

'Taphophile' is the name given to someone who takes an interest in cemeteries, tombstones, or memory of past lives. I consider myself a bit of a taphophile, and I'm in good company: Famous historical figures including Friedrich Nietzsche and Mark Twain are said to have been fascinated with graveyards; Amanda Norman is a well-known English tapho-photographer; some say William Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe were taphophiles, all ruminating over life's unanswered questions as they strolled through the hallowed grounds.

Florida - Where The Alligator Smiles

Today there are only two species of alligator on earth, the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) and the Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis). Those who live in Florida have to share the space with a very large reptile, the American alligator (Alligator mississipiensis). The name 'alligator' is widely believed to have come from the Spanish name 'el lagarto'. This eventually changed into "aligarto" and then "alligator" by English settlers.

The family Alligatoridae first appeared about 35 million years ago. After surviving nearly unchanged since the time of the dinosaurs, and having virtually no natural predators as adults today, alligators were headed for extinction only 20 years ago due to intense hunting from man. Protecting the species and alligator habitats has allowed the status to be changed from endangered to threatened. They are an important part of their ecosystem - they control the population of prey species, create peat through their nesting activities, and benefit several other species with 'alligator holes' and nests.

Alligators have inhabited Florida's marshes, swamps, rivers and lakes for many centuries. Because of their predatory nature and large size, they are known to occasionally attack pets, livestock and even humans. Although many Floridians have learned to coexist with alligators, the potential for conflict always exists. However, all it takes is a little understanding of the alligator's needs and habits to continue a long-term coexistence. Knowing where the alligator lives, how he behaves and what we can do to avoid conflict with alligators is key to sharing the available space safely.

Chicago Graffiti

Graffiti art, a tradition which dates back to the Stone Age, has been found in ancient Roman ruins, in the remains of the Mayan city of Tikal in Central America, on rocks in Spain dating to the 16th century, and in medieval English churches. It is an art form unique to large urban areas and part of the fabric of cities from New York to Berlin, and of course, Chicago. Some might consider it an eyesore, or question whether it's really art, but it's hard to argue the talent on display in many of the works.

Although uninvited and unauthorized graffiti is vandalism, scars the community, hurts property, and is seen as urban decay, local street art is often perceived as a sign of a neighborhood's hip quotient, can act as the true voice of a community and often reflects triumphs, turbulence, or obstacles that are unique to a specific place and time. They tell a cultural story about the transition of the neighborhood and its current gentrification clashes. Exploring this type of art is also one of the most vivid ways to understand the dialogue of what's happening in a community.

Street Art is a rapidly developing art form whose value is highly contested and reviled by many authorities while also subject to protection, sometimes within the same jurisdiction. Of course art is largely in the eye of the beholder, but some of the quality we see on a spray-can-painted wall is top-notch. The artist do some amazing work - incredibly detailed, whimsical and colorful pieces, really beautiful and interesting works of art.

Chicago Fourth Presbyterian Church

The Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago was formed in February 1871 by the merger of Westminster Presbyterian Church and North Presbyterian Church. The combined congregation dedicated to build a church building on Pine Street (now upper Michigan Avenue), which was then a fairly undeveloped part of the city. The congregation employed architect Ralph Adams Cram to build them a Gothic Revival building. Cram, who also designed the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, was at work on both churches at the same time during 1912. Only Fourth Presbyterian was completed, however, and was dedicated in 1914.

Cram designed and built the church for Fourth Presbyterian's congregation, but the parish house, cloister, manse, and garth were designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw.The church building is the oldest structure on Chicago's Michigan Avenue, with the exception of the Chicago Water Tower, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The church is all around wonderful whether you are looking for a place to attend a service, join a community, volunteer, admire architecture, enjoy musical concerts or get married. The ministers are progressive and open-minded and write thoughtful sermons. I highly recommend attending a Sunday service to hear the organ (and the Tower Brass every 3rd Sunday of the month) or attend one of the Friday noonday concerts which occur every Friday at noon and typically feature jazz music.
The Fourth Pres. community is a prime example for being what Christianity should be: progressive, tolerant, open-minded, enlightened and a force for communal good.

Survival Expert Bristlecone Pine

The biblical Methuselah, ancestor to Noah, was said to have lived 969 years. The world's oldest living thing, the Methuselah Tree, a Bristlecone Pine in California's White Mountains, has endured almost five times as long. It thrives and survives in conditions that would strike fear into the phloem of virtually all other plants.
In the rain shadow of the mighty Sierra Nevadas, which blocks weather approaching from the west, the average annual precipitation is less than 12 inches, and most of that falls as snow in winter. In summer, which can provide as few as six weeks of warmth for bristlecone pines to generate growth and reserves for overwintering, precipitable moisture ranks among the lowest recorded anywhere on earth. Moreover, the soil the bristlecones cling to is not dirt as most plants know it but dolomite, a limestone substrate with few nutrients. With so little time to get energy from the sun, and so little energy to be had from the soil, growth is grindingly slow. A bristlecone pine may add to its girth no more than an inch per century.

Bristlecone Pine trees (Pinus longaeva) have evolved survival strategies that might make other, less hardy plants, well, green with envy. They put a greater premium on getting by than on getting big. It is an ability that, perhaps more than any other, allows the species, in standout cases, to last longer than most civilizations. The tallest sequoia, a coast redwood also found in California, is 367 feet tall. The tallest bristlecone pine is but 60 feet tall, and most of its kind are much shorter. Clearly, bigger is not better in such a brutal environment as that found at high altitude in the White Mountains.

Some gnarled old bristlecones have only a thin strip of living bark, which sustains a single living branch and its needles. In a sense, these ancients have gone back to being seedlings. Can they still be called a living tree? Well, if reproductive ability is a prerequisite to being considered alive, then the answer is a resounding yes, for even the hoariest bristlecones can generate cones with viable seeds. And however truncated that tree is, it is still the very same tree that was a seedling when, say, King Tut was a boy.
