The Ten Commandments

Although often called the moral foundation of our society, a moral code of behavior and basic ethical rules, the Ten Commandments, a covenant or arrangement God made with specific people at specific times in history, are instructive but not necessarily imperative for us. They may be reinterpreted for different contexts. Their ethical value must be cautiously explored, not assumed.
The 10 Commandments, found in the 20th chapter of the book of Exodus, only tell us how not to live; they do not tell us how to live. They fail to serve as a "moral guide", a rational code which takes account of man's profound need for values.

Chinese Lions - Luck Prosperity Power Grandeur

When we picture old China dragons and lions come to mind.
Chinese guardian lions, also known as Imperial guardian lions, shishi lions, 'Foo Dogs' and ‘Fu Lions’, are a symbol for luck and prosperity, power and grandeur. However, because lion images have existed for so many years, the meaning of the symbols attached to the animal have grown and changed.
It is said that the Chinese dragon had nine sons, each of whom was endowed with a unique supernatural power. The eighth son was like a lion. One Chinese legend holds that female lions have nipples on the bottoms of their paws which they use to suckle the cub.
Chinese lions, more friendly than fierce, are one of the most popular and permanent examples of Chinese art. They come in pairs to provide a perfect balance of yin and yang - the ideal company for each other, and were introduced into the imagery of Chinese Buddhism as a symbol for the totality of Buddhist law.

The Chinese Jesus

Few people in the West are aware that 500 years before Christ was born, a man lived in China whose teachings are uncannily similar to those of Jesus. His name was Mozi. The Chinese Philosopher may have been a disciple of Confucius. If so, he soon became his opponent.
The teachings of Jesus are very similar to Mozi's ideas.
Jesus may well have been a Jewish scholar who learned of the teachings of Mozi. Was Jesus copying Mozi? We don't know. What we do know is that Moism (Mohism) shares many parallels and similarities with Christianity as it is taught today.

Row of Chinese Rooftops

Roofs are a very important part of Chinese architecture. Rooftops with sweeping slopes ending in upturned, projecting eaves and tiled corners, sometimes in several tiers, are a unique feature to the classical Chinese architecture.
The curve upward is a hydraulic device to throw the water further away fron the building. This a very clever design, but western Architects didn't use this type of device in buildings because it is labor and material intensive.
Chines rooftops, often decorated with ornaments and small sculptures, are beauty and pleasure, a practical thing doing a dull common every day utilitarian task. The magic and the practical, the real and the unreal, are welded together each doing its respective job.

China - Land of Many Faces

Chinese shadow play is the ancient art of shadow puppetry, a form of entertainment using paper puppets whose shadows are projected onto a lit up backdrop to create the appearance of moving images.
The art of creating shadow puppets has a long history in China. According to one historical legend, the emperor Wu was greatly saddened after one of his favorite concubines died. So, several court officials created a puppet with hinged arms and legs using donkey leather and paint. They then lit an oil lamp to display her shadow, bringing her �back to life� to please emperor. The artists used a variety of dazzling colors to make shadow figures and props\' reflection on the illuminated, translucent backdrop screen more magnificent and sparkling. Then the love story was recorded in the book of �The History of the Han Dynasty�, and the Shadow Play began to become quite popular.
Shadow puppet play, also called sheep play and head play, a drama in which silhouettes are projected onto a white screen, first born about 2000 years ago, faces extinction in China. The precursor of modern movies is more and more replaced by TV and cinema. Today, the Chinese Shadow puppet, a profile of a character, as opposed to a 3-dimensional image, is a very popular collector\'s item. Museums in countries all over the world are eager to collect them, and tourists purchase chinese shadow puppets as souvenirs.

Puhuitang River Bridge Qibao - Shanghai China

Over thousand years old Qibao Ancient Town near Shanghai, China, is ancient Chinese styled shopping lanes in between traditional river side houses. The narrow shopping lanes are always hectic and crowded with people snacking away on local specialities. It feels like Qibao is running a fair every day.
The Puhuitang river, which is running across town, brings a tranquil, authentic 'water town charm' over this old town.
If you step out of the crowd and stand on one of the Puhuitang River bridges, you will see the black roofed river side houses with their turn-up eaves mirroring in the water right under you - a scenery that draws me into an ancient water town daydream every time I visit.

Paperbark tree

Even common trees are amazing enough, but some trees are just spectacular, fascinating and visually stunning whether by their sheer size, age or shape or through mysterious properties they seem to possess.
Paperbark trees can grow to be a very large tree in its native habitat in China. The common name "paperbark" refers to the fact that the tree's bark peels away from the trunk, an ornamental attribute valued by gardeners. Big and old their bark resembles tan colored paper.
Not only is the Paperbark Tree exquisitely beautiful, but it is also a rare Chinese species.

Slices of Chinese Life

Bamboo is a bountiful grass used throughout China.
Relying mainly on simple, traditional means for transportation over short distances, people in Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, one of China's old and very famous water towns, one hour away from ultra modern, booming Shanghai, still carry their heavy loads on bamboo sticks balanced across their shoulders.
But no matter how heavy the load is ... the friendly smile on their faces cannot be missed.

Yuanjin Chanyuan Temple - Zhu Jia Jiao Ancient Town

Most of the historical buildings now standing in Zhujiajiao Ancient Town near Shanghai, China, were completed in the early 1900s, with some dating back to Ming and Qing dynasties. These buildings in this historic watertown can be divided into four major groups: religious buildings including temples, cathedrals and churches; civilian residences,commercial buildings and public buildings.
Yuanjin Chanyuan - also called Niannian Miao -, a Buddhist Temple at the cross between Caogang River and Pearl Stream, was constructed in 1341. It holds a statue of the Holy Mother of Chenzhou, therefore, it is also named the Empress' Temple. The temple is renowned for its Buddha statues, paintings and handwriting by famous chinese writers.

Zhujiajiao - A Glimpse of Ancient Yangtze Delta Life

The Yangtze River, the Chinese call it the Chang Jiang (Changjiang) - the Long River, is famous for its magnificent gorges depicted on many Chinese scrolls. But along the banks of the third-longest river in the world are also primitive rural towns, grim concrete cities, and green terraced farms - all the elements that form China's backbone. The Yangtze River ends its 4,000 mile journey at the port city of Shanghai, where it empties into the China Sea.
Millennium-old Zhujiajiao water town, the Venice of Shanghai, offers a glimpse into the ancient Yangtze Delta life. An hour's drive from the People's Square in downtown Shanghai, the 1,000-year-old town, the 'Pearl Stream' by the lakeside of Dianshan Lake, is built around Dianpu Creek, a branch of the Huangpu River, in the south of the Yangtze River. The ancient, historical waterside town with its picturesque waterways, arched bridges, ancient architectural structures and old stone paved streets is a charming place to visit.

Pearl Stream River Blues - Zhujiajiao near Shanghai

An ancient township with white walls and gray-tiled houses built on water southwest of Shanghai - this is Zhujiaji Ancient Town, sometimes called 'Pearl Stream.
Being one of the Yangtze River Delta Water Towns Zhujiaji was one of the largest commercial centers on the lower reaches of the Yangtze river during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911). That explains why there are so many buildings in the style of both eras.
The river quietly reflects the white walls, gray-tiled houses, bridges and the passing boats.
Visiting Zhujiaji means visiting a township back in the last century. Its peace and tranquility puts the mind at ease.

Ward off evil spirits

Evil spirits. Do they exist? Many people believe they do.
In China the belief in the supernatural power of rocks, that they protect, can heal, or provide wealth, goes back beyond recorded history. A huge, often very special rock denies evil and destructive agents and bad vibes access to the house, and those who put up one of these rocks outside their front door are protected all the time.
Evil spirits can enter in our world through many open doors. That's why rocks have been used in chinese protective magic since ancient times to keep evil of all types away from the home and protect the house and everyone in it.

One of our biggest misconceptions about China is that it is a "third-world" country.
One look at Pudong, Shanghai's newest commercial district, erases this misconception. The truly amazing thing is that just twenty years ago this part of the city was all farmland.

The Bund - More than Shanghai's most beautiful landmark

The Bund is an epitome of Shanghai's history and it symbolizes Shanghai. It got its name from a desolate beach outside the old Shanghai City.
Between 1840 into the 1930's, many foreign businesses snatched this area to establish concessions, banks, headquarters, consul houses and so on. Hence, Shanghai, China, a small seaside town one hundred years ago, became the largest city in Asia. It also earned the reputation of "The Oriental Wall Street".
Looking at the Bund's historic buildings visitors can still feel the prosperity of the old Shanghai.

Shanghai's Bund is back to its best

If the building zone on the Bund, Shanghai, China, would be a gallery, the rest of the Bund would be a showroom.
When the sun rises in the east, the Bund is a place where people do exercises. During daytime, the old buildings blend beautifully with the scenery of the Huangpu River and the new Pudong area accross the river. When evening comes the Bund is bathed in city lights. A spectacular scene.
The Bund is like "an exhibition of buildings". Though mostly designed by foreign architects during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when overseas powers dominated Shanghai, the Bund’s allure is enduring.
