Diabolo Lake North Cascades NP WA - Christine Till

Diablo Lake, in North Cascades National Park, Washington State, USA has a beautiful turquoise/green color which is especially striking in bright sunshine. This color results from suspended particles of rock "flour" - bits of rock which have been ground by glaciers and deposited into the lake. Paddling on a sheen of green can perk up anyone who ventures to emerald-colored Diablo Lake at the geographic center and, some would say, the aesthetic center of the North Cascades National Park.

National Bison Range. Moiese. MT

When bison began dwindling from the Great Plains, Salish-Kootenai tribal members transplanted bison from east of the Continental Divide into the Flathead Valley. Those buffalos later became the seed herd for the Moiese National Bison Range (NBR) and also supplemented the remnant herd of 25 animals that was hiding out in Yellowstone's Lamar Valley.
The National Bison Range, established in 1908, consists of 19,000 acres of natural grassland, which is now home to about 500 American buffaloes and other inhabitants such as birds, whitetail and mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and black bear. The animals can be observed from signposted roads in this reserve, north of Missoula in the Flathead Reservation.

National Bison Range Wildlife Refuge, MT, USA

The history of the bison, or buffalo, in the Flathead Valley began 1873 when Walking Coyote, a Pend d' Oreille Indian, returned from Blackfeet Country on the plains with five orphaned calves. By 1890, of the 30 to 70 million bison that once roamed the plains, less than 100 remained in the wild and overall there were fewer than 1,000 left. Having been part of a Federal government sponsored program of eradication during the Indian Wars, thereby removing a vital food source from the Plains Indians diet, and ensuring easier relocation onto Indian reservations, buffaloes were almost extinct.
In 1908 the National Bison Range (NBR), the only federal wildlife refuge for buffalos, was established in western Montana to provide a sanctuary for the American bison.

St. Mary Lake - Glacier National Park, MT

St. Mary Lake is the second largest lake in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA, created by a widening of the St. Mary River. Located on the east side of the park, the Going-to-the-Sun Road parallels the lake along its north shore. Here, the great plains end and the Rocky Mountains begin in an abrupt five thousand foot (1,500 m) altitude change, with Little Chief Mountain posing a formidable southern flank above the west end of the lake. The lake is 9.9 miles (15.9 km) long and three hundred feet (100 m) deep. During the winter, the lake often is frozen completely over with ice up to four feet (1 m) thick.

Jackson Glacier - Glacier National Park MT

Jackson Glacier is approximately the 7th largest of the remaining 25 glaciers in Glacier National Park located in the U.S. state of Montana. In 2005 glacier was measured at 250 acres (1.0 qkm), yet when first documented in 1850, the glacier also included the now separate Blackfoot Glacier and together, they covered 1,875 acres (7.59 qkm). Between 1966 and 2005, Jackson Glacier lost almost a third of its acreage. When the two glaciers were united prior to their separation sometime before 1929, they were known simply as Blackfoot Glacier.

Old Faithful - An American Icon in Yellowstone National Park WY

Roughly every 76 minutes Old Faithful Geyser, Yellowstone National Park, WY, shoots up to 8,400 gallons of boiling water some 175 feet skyward. This steamy natural wonder in Yellowstone's Upper Geyser Basin area has erupted more than a million times on schedule since the park was opened in 1872. The superlatives to describe this national icon and Yellowstone National Park overall have yet to be invented.

Hymen Terrace at Mammoth Hot Springs - Yellowstone National Park WY

"A mountain turning itself inside-out" is a perfect description of Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The travertine limestone terraces are uniquely stunning. Where else can you see these eerie, white-rimmed, steaming ledges of wonder? There is a pixilated, Mondrian, post-modern quality to the terraces, yet at the same time there is a timeless beauty that seems to predate any modern artistic sensibility.

Clepsydra Geyser West Yellowstone National Park USA WY

Clepsydra Geyser - lower geyser basin Yellowstone National Park, (USA WY) - is a constant performer. The geyser got this Greek name (Clepsydra = water clock) because it used to erupt regularly every three minutes. Since the 1959 Hebgen earthquake, however, Clepsydra erupts almost without pause.

Coyote blending in

Coyotes (Canis latrans, barking dog) are native to the prairies and desert canyons of the west but have extend their range from southern Canada to Costa Rica. And they made themselves at home in cities, suburbs, and rural areas in the eastern US. The opportunistic coyote has brains, a sense of humor, and the determination to survive. The howls and yips of the coyote is truly a song of the West.

Silex Spring Fountain Paint Pot Yellowstone National Park WY

Silex is Latin for silica, the major component of rhyolite, the primary volcanic rock in Yellowstone. It lines the bottom of Silex Spring in the Fountain Paint Pot area in Yellowstone National Park,Wyoming, and forms terraces along the runoff channels. There is some variety of color around the edges of the spring but it is mostly just a beautiful blue (HOT!) spring.

Old Faithful Geyser eruption Yellowstone National Park WY

Old Faithful geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming is perhaps the world's most photographed, studied and predicted geyser. The scene and the eruption are hard to forget. Old Faithful, just like an actor, tries to keep each performance a little different to keep his fans from getting bored.

On May 1st hundreds of people in Jackson, WY, are eagerly awaiting the opening of Gros Ventre Mountian's elk refuge to collect shed antlers. Antler collecting is good business. A healthy mature bull elk might have a total of 35lbs of antler bone on his head - that's over $350 per pair of dropped antlers. To collect them is well worth the effort.

Ride around town in style in a authentic stagecoach in Jackson Hole, WY. The stage coach with wooden wheels is pulled by two big horses, and the driver looks like a cowboy. You'll feel each bump in the road but if you come to Jackson, Wyoming this is one cool and inexpensive attraction you should put on your must-do list.

Touch The Clouds

Life is like a trampoline. To get higher you have to learn to fall and bounce back up, for the first jump is never the best.

Those that live their life refusing to make that fall will never reach as high as they possibly can. Denying your wrongs, your falling moments, only denies the moments when you can touch the clouds ...

Abstract Reflections in Glass, Tucson, Arizona

New work posted yesterday:

A buildings' horizontal and vertical lines and reflective glass facade appear ideal subjects for photography, a medium that is nothing but an exact recorder of distinct volumes in space.

The glass facades of buildings represents not only the interface between interior and exterior. They are also subtle puzzles, mingling with the reflections of their neighbors in reality. This process of visual concentration creates a more intense impression of reality than the direct perception of the real objects would allow. They lend the building poetic quality that fires the imagination.

Spring is in the air

Feels like spring! The sun, although still a bit rusty, is definitely brighter and stronger now and the thermometer is rising.

Nature comes alive with vibrancy. There is something sacred about spring's energy. Spring means new beginnings and new hope.

It's time to color Easter eggs, create Easter cards and other goodies.
Yes, there's spring in the air .... What more could we ask for?

Desert Spring
Desert Spring

Desert sand verbena begins spreading across the desert.
This brilliant pink, violet or purple fragrant (at nighttime) flowers bloom between February and July following rains. The flower clusters are about the size of a golf ball, and the silver-gray foliage adds to the dramatic effect of this beautiful plant.

2010 will be an excellent blooming season for desert wildflowers after this winter's rains wet the soil.

Taos, New Mexico, Indian Pueblo Cemetery
Taos, New Mexico - Indian Pueblo Cemetery

Taos is a city in New Mexico, about one hour northeast of Santa Fe. One of its highlights is the Taos Pueblo, a Native American reservation and World Heritage site.

One of most interesting parts in the Taos Pueblo is their cemetery. The old bell tower of the old Mission Church of San Geronimo de Taos (1619) still stands, watching over the headstones in this cemetery.

It is a special place, and I encourage you to visit it,
