For years Pudong New District, Shanghai, China, was little more than muddy sites and pie-in-the-sky dreams. But in the early 90s Chinese planners started to mold the first metropolis of the new millennium, one that may ultimately eclipse Hong Kong.
Bigger, higher, faster, those have been the buzzwords at Pudong ever since the Chinese leadership announced its intention two decades ago to transform this nondescript stretch of land into a city for the next millennium.
Everything in Pudong moves faster than you believe could be possible.

The Bund - Shanghai's signature strip of historic riverfront architecture
The physical impact of the Bund – taken from a Hindi word meaning 'embankment', though officially called Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu, and colloquially branded 'Waitan' (meaning 'outer beach') – is multi-faceted.
For tourists arriving on cruise liners, today as of yesteryear, it represents their first taste of China, where modern skyscraper Shanghai is cast in the background; for the masses, it's the place to promenade and for the élite the place to indulge in life's finer pleasures in a city besotted by glitz and glamour.
Historically, the Bund marks the spot where Shanghai (which translates as 'above the sea') grew from a small settlement in the early 19th century into today's globalised mega-city of 20 million people, the place where wooden barges became ocean-going cruise liners, and street-side food carts turned into restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs.
The Bund represented Shanghai's theatre of dreams. It is China's historic cradle of possibilities.

The Bund - Old Shanghai China - A museum of international architecture
On the other side of the Huangpu River from Pudong, north of the old walled city of Shanghai, China, is the historically significant Bund (Waitan). "Bund" derives from an Anglo-Indian word for an embankment along a muddy waterfront and that is what it was in the beginning when the first British company opened a office there in 1846. In the late 19th and early 20th century many foreign corporations followed and set up their massive Chinese trading centers. Consulates of most countries, many banks, businesses and newspaper offices, hotels, exclusive clubs, press organizations and headquarters of international concerns settled on the Bund.
Centered on Zhongshan Road within the former Shanghai International Settlement, the famous one mile long waterfront, a symbol of Shanghai, was the centre of Shanghai's politics, economy and culture, and it was China's Wall Street, as Shanghai's financial market became the third largest in the world (behind London and New York).
The most famous and attractive sight, which is at the west side of the Bund, are 52 various buildings of different architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism, Renaissance, Beaux-Arts, Neo-Classical, Art Deco, eclectic and modern.

The Bund - Shanghai's magnificent historic waterfront
By the late 1920s, the Bund, Shanghai, China had been transformed into the thriving Wall Street of Asia – at a time when the New York original was mired in crashing depression. Signifying Shanghai’s riches were three of the finest foreign-designed structures in the Far East: the art deco Sassoon House (opened in 1929 and home to the Cathay Hotel, now the Fairmont Peace Hotel); the domed neo-classical Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank (1923); and the Custom House (1927), whose dominant clock-tower was modelled on London’s Big Ben.
The Bund is an engineering and architectural marvel designed to be adored. It will always remain Shanghai’s most potent landmark.

Chinese Ancient Relics - Bronze Cauldron Jing'an Temple Shanghai
Jing An Si (Jing An Temple) in downtown Shanghai, China, is worth a visit especially for Buddhists.
There is a saying in China that the 'God of Chinese people is money'. That's true to an extent and especially visible in Jing'an Temple. It is surprising to see people with faith in another God (or Gods) prostrating themselves to a different entity praying for prosperity, and throwing coins into the top of a cauldron, the higher tier in which your coins lands, the luckier you will become.

Observing the Sounds of the World
Buddha's teachings and Buddhism itself are essentially atheistic, although neither deny the existence of beings that might be called "gods".
Kuan Yin (also spelled Guan Yin, Kwan Yin) is the bodhisattva of compassion venerated by East Asian Buddhists. Commonly known as the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan Yin is also revered by Chinese Taoists as an Immortal.
The name Kuan Yin is short for Kuan Shih Yin (Guan Shi Yin) which means "Observing the Sounds of the World".

Buddha
Whether or not we follow the Buddhist religion, we are all familiar with the traditional image of the rotund, smiling Buddha.
In contrast to the laughing Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama Buddha (founder of the Buddhist religion) was tall and had an athletic build. The Historical Buddha (a real person who lived around 500 BC in India) is one of the most widely recognized in India, China, the rest of Asia and worldwide.
Buddha is not a personal name. It is an honorific term, like messiah or Christ (the anointed one). Another common term for Buddha is Tathagata. The Chinese name for Buddha is Foh. In Japan, Tathagata is rendered as "Nyorai," and an honorific title given to those who have attained enlightenment.

Laughing Buddha - A symbol of joy and wealth
The Smiling Buddha, also known as the Laughing Buddha, Happy Buddha or Fat Buddha, is the common English description of the Buddhist deity identified as Budai to the Chinese, and Hotei to the Japanese. This deity is in turn a derivation of the Bodhisattva Maitreya.
The Smiling Buddha has been embraced by many Buddhist and Taoist practitioners, and the Buddha statues feature in many homes and places of worship. Believers associate the Smiling Buddha with positive characteristics such as happiness, prosperity, luck, wealth and contentment. As a result, you will find many of these Smiling Buddha statues and sculptures of Maitreya all over the world.

Guardian Warrior - Men With Big Swords - Jing'an Temple Shanghai
Like most monasteries and temples, the main doors of Jing'an Temple Shanghai, China, are guarded by guardian warriors; warrior-type sculptures in ornate armour and clothing, holding large swords. They are said to be guardians of heaven.
It is said that anyone who tries to enter the temple with a burden of negativity will find him- or herself unable to get past the guardians. Leave it all outside, they say, and enter with a pure heart.

The Bund - Shanghai's famous waterfront
Paralleling Shanghai's extraordinary transformation into an ultra-stylish modern metropolis and its phenomenal rise on the international stage, the city's landmark waterfront, the Bund, once the 'Wall Street of Asia', is again in the limelight as a charismatic world-class destination for life's finest pleasures.
The Bund's monumental edifices were built as lasting testament to the city's commercial success. Viewing the Bund at night when the historic buildings are lit from top to bottom, electrifying the city's skyline, leaves no doubt that the 'Paris of the Orient', still has a style and flair quite different from any other Chinese city.

Roof Corner - Expo China Pavilion Shanghai
The China Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010 was designed in the shape of an oriental crown. Its main structure includes a six layer, 30 meter high roof made of 56 traditional wooden brackets. the brackets symbolize the nation's 56 minority ethnic groups.
The top of the roof features a Sudoku grid, which was a traditional urban planning feature in ancient Chinese cities. A smaller Sudoku shadow appears in the semi-open square on the ground floor of the structure when the sun shines into the pavilion.
The Chinese Pavilion is expressing the good imagine of China. However, the real Chinese Culture and life can hardly be found in big cities; one needs to travel deeper into small villages, the rural parts of China. That's still a different story!

Buddha in solid silver - Jin'an Temple Shanghai
Jing'an Si, or Jing'an Temple, a Buddhist temple characterized by lavish wealth in Shanghai, China, feels like an island of peace in a chaotic city, a world away from the urban bustle outside.
Its centerpiece is the Jing'an Silver Buddha, which is 29 feet tall and is made from 15 tons of solid silver.
To many, Buddha has become a universal symbol for prayer, reflection, and deep mysticism. Kneeling on the pads looking up, one is easily entranced by the silver eyes of this giant Buddha looking down upon you. It is not difficult to imagine why people, both rich and poor, come in from the streets just to spend some quiet time in prayer and to bring their offers.

Guanyin Bodhisattva - Jin'an's rare female Buddha
As the oldest shrine in Shanghai, China, the locals regard Jin'an Temple higher than the tourist favorite Jade Buddha Temple.
In Jingan's east gallery stands the Guanyin Bodhisattva, a rare female Buddha carved from a thousand year old camphor tree. This goddess, the bodhisattva of compassion and provider of children, stands on a lotus-shaped base and is 6.2 meter tall. As all Bodhisattvas, she shares only one of the 32 physical attributes of a Buddha - the elongated earlobes.
In China Guanyin Bodhisattva is one of the most popular of Chinese deities. In ancient times of suffering and poverty, Guanyin used her breast milk to feed the rice plants and, therefore, the people.

Monks chanting - Jing'an Temple Shanghai
Most of Buddha's followers try to be good while still living their normal lives, but some of his followers adopt the idea of getting away from the world so they can work full-time as monk or nun, being good and pure for a monthly salary.
Built between 220 and 280 AD, Jing'an Temple is one of the oldest temples in Shanghai, China. With its unmistakable bright yellow walls shining brightly on Shanghai's busiest road, Nanjing Xi Lu, Jing an si is a popular attraction where monks can often be seen chanting.

Shanghai Exhibition Center - Soviet Friendship Mansion
Shanghai Exhibition Center (SEC), one of the most representative architectures in Shanghai, was completed in 1955. Its original name was the "Palace of Sino-Soviet Friendship", but once the honeymoon period between China and the Soviet Union was over and relations began to sour it was renamed to "Shanghai Pavilion".
Referred to as "the wedding cake" by resident foreigners, the Center in its monumental glory, with its bold Bolshevik strokes, classical pillars, marbled halls, rich stucco walls, showy chandeliers, intricate metalwork, stained-glass windows and gilded spire topped with the Soviet star was designed in the Russian neoclassical style of architecture.
The SEC is a classy counterpoint to the surrounding mix of sleek modern glass towers, ungainly early Opening- and Reform-era tile-clad high rises and remaining strips of pre-war Shanghai low-rise shops and lane houses.

Temple Pagoda Zhujiajiao - Shanghai China
It is refreshing to come to Zhujiajiao from Shanghai. While Shanghai is going through urbanization at incredible speed, it is a relief to find a small village, not so far from the ever-growing megalopolis, that fits the image of serene, Old China.
Zhujiajiao - a town with over 1,000 years of history, features rivers, bridges, old streets and gardens. Small rivers crisscross with 36 old bridges on them.
Over 1,000 houses first built in Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) stand along both sides of nine narrow streets.
I hope new waves of change will be kept at bay from an ancient village like Zhu jia jiao. As they say, "once the water is out of the bucket, it’s hard to pour it back."
