Window Rock Arizona

Window Rock's major local landmark, the rock-with-hole-through-it (Navajo: tségháhoodzání) - rendered in English as "Window Rock" - is a place of unsurpassed beauty and power. The "Window" has an arch of about sixty feet. When you gaze up through the Window, your view is of the heavens. Whether you see rain or sunshine, the view is just as spectacular.

Until 1936, the area was sparsely populated and known only by its ceremonial name Niʼ A³níiʼgi ("Center of the World"), but this is the place that the Dine, or Navajo, people have made their home, even though historians tell us that they have arrived here within historical times and have their ancient roots much farther to the north. Today the city of Window Rock (Navajo: Tségháhoodzání) is the seat of government and capital of the Navajo Nation, the largest territory of a sovereign Native American nation in North America.

Window Rock is a place that can strike you as either barren or beautiful, depending on the time you take to understand it. I subscribe to the latter view, with the beauty coming not just from the scenery but from the culture and people. It is worth visiting, and respecting when you are interacting with it.

Navajo Code Talkers - Navajo People

They were a small band of warriors who created an unbreakable code from the ancient language of their people and changed the course of modern history.

Known as Navajo Code Talkers, they were young Navajo men who transmitted secret communications on the battlefields of WWII. At a time when America's best cryptographers were falling short, these modest sheepherders and farmers were able to fashion the most ingenious and successful code in military history. They drew upon their proud warrior tradition to brave the dense jungles of Guadalcanal and the exposed beachheads of Iwo Jima.

Serving with distinction in every major engagement of the Pacific theater from 1942-1945, their unbreakable code played a pivotal role in saving countless lives and hastening the war's end.

Diné Tah 'Among The People' Scenic Road

Because the Dine' Tah "Among the People" Scenic Road crosses the border into New Mexico, it is broken into two segments in Arizona: from Chinle running northeast around Canyon de Chelly National Monument and then east to the New Mexico border, and a second piece from Lupton (on Interstate 40) running north through Window Rock to the New Mexico border. This is a scenic and historic 100-mile route through part of the Navajo Nation, leading past Ancestral Puebloan structures, cliffside dwellings and many sites of rock art. The countryside itself is spectacular rugged desert outback punctuated by mountain chains capped with verdant pine forests and cut by deeply eroded canyons.

All the materials that make up the sandstones were laid down more than 100 million years ago, at times when this area was under water and during one long period when this was an absolutely barren desert covered with wind-blown sand dunes up to 1,000' feet thick. Over the millenia this area was covered over again and again with other materials, compressing that sand, silt and mud from long ago. Then about 65 million years ago, the whole area was suddenly pushed up as the Colorado Plateau and all that newer, softer material eroded away, leaving what we see now.

Diné Tah "Among the People" Scenic Road (Indian Route 12) meanders through the Navajo Indian Reservation and its red rock vistas. As travelers head north, they become immediately aware of the change in their surroundings. Gone are the infrastructure and busy activity of cities, and instead open land stretches out, accented with striking rock formations.

Homolovi Ruins State Park Arizona

For miles surrounding Homolovi Ruins State Park, all that can be seen are rolling hills covered with scrub. Yet this was a popular site for the Anasazi hundreds of years ago and still is sacred to the Hopis.

The Hisat'sinom, or Anasazi as archaeologists call them, made their home on the Little Colorado River during the fourteenth century for a brief time before joining the people already on the mesas. These people are now known as the Hopi and continue to consider Homol'ovi to be their homeland. The Hopi still travel to the site to reconnect with the land telling us that the broken stones and pottery are part of the landscape creating the trail that will be followed by the Bahana when he comes back.

Located 5 miles northeast of Winslow, Arizona, the vegetation of Homol'ovi is quite different from most other Arizona State Parks. It is high desert grassland with few trees, so visitors can expect to see plentiful amounts of snakeweed, saltbrush, prickly pear, yucca and sage, to name just a few species of plants. The most common critter in the Homolovi State Park area is the black-tailed prairie dog, which can live in huge colonies that cover up to 100 acres. Elk, mountain lions, cottontail rabbits, burrowing owls and porcupine make up the other residents of the park.

Standin' On A Corner In Winslow Arizona

Is a passing mention in a 30+ year old rock song lyric cause for civic celebration? When the Eagles first decided to "Take it Easy" in a song written by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey in 1973, the reference to "standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona" was just a catchy almost-rhyme.

Along the infamous Route 66, there really is a corner in Winslow, Arizona, on which you can stand. They even named it "Standin' On a Corner Park" after the catchy line in the Eagles song. I was surprised to find there was such a place. On the corner of Kinsley Avenue and Second Street/Route 66 is a statue of a young man leaning on his guitar, and on the store window behind him is a painting of a woman driving past in a red Ford pickup. Across the street is a Route 66 memorabilia shop playing Eagles songs on a continuous loop. They have every Route 66 souvenir you can imagine. Painted in the intersection is a huge Route 66 road sign. If you stand there long enough, you will see a steady stream of people stopping to take a photo on the corner. Many will ask you to take the photos for them. It's a great way to meet fellow travelers, and it's also good karma.

The Eagles made Winslow, Arizona famous in their song "Take It Easy." It's a song almost everyone knows, hums and sings. It has put Winslow on the map.

Ford F-500 - Route 66 - Winslow Arizona

A line from "Take It Easy," the 1972 hit by the Eagles, has become the lifeblood of tiny Winslow in Arizona. Winslow's "Standin' on the Corner Park" on the corner of Second Street and Kinsley Avenue, on Route 66, the Mother Road, celebrates the song with the catchy line
..... Well I'm a standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and such a fine sight to see.
It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin' down to take a look at me .....

A cherry-red vintage flatbed Ford truck is parked nearby. And on a brick wall behind the statue and truck is a large mural featuring a grinning blonde in such a truck, who clearly - as the song says - is "slowin' down to take a look" at the itinerant all-American musician who has caught her eye.

Is it worth seeing? Of course it is! It's on RT 66! And to be sure you know that it is, the highway number is painted on the street.
A statue, a mural, a flatbed F-500 Ford and music seemingly coming from out of nowhere makes this a great little street corner park the type of place that makes traveling off the interstate so much more interesting.

Tonto Natural Bridge Arizona

Located between Payson, Arizona, and Pine, Arizona, tucked away in a tiny valley surrounded by a forest of pine trees, Tonto Natural Bridge State Park has been in the making for thousands of years. It is believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge in the world.

Thousands of years ago, volcanic lava, seawater and precipitation combined to form a travertine dam here. Then, around 5000 years ago, water began seeping through the travertine from fractures below. As the water slowly eroded the travertine, Tonto Natural Bridge was formed. 150-foot-wide, the bridge arches 183 feet above sparkling Pine Creek. It is surrounded by pine trees, while flowing springs and fern-draped grottos line the narrow canyon upstream.

Tonto Natural Bridge is a must-see if you are in the Payson area. I would recommend hiking under the bridge to anyone that feels like they are physically able to do it as it is a whole different perspective of the bridge once you are underneath.

Roosevelt Lake Arizona

Theodore Roosevelt Lake is a large reservoir formed by Theodore Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River in Arizona as part of the Salt River Project.

Once the largest man-made lake in the world, Roosevelt Lake is still the biggest of the six SRP lakes and offers the most recreation opportunities. When full, the lake covers more than 17,000 acres near the confluence of Tonto Creek and the Salt River. Game fish in Roosevelt include largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish and crappie. The Lake contains a wildlife area and as a wildlife refuge, is posted to permit hunting at certain times of the year.

The last few years had seen a dramatic reduction in the water level, largely due to the need to maintain supply to the other lakes on the Salt River downstream - in some places the shoreline was half a mile distant from the previous high point. Still, in such conditions many good beaches are exposed which provide excellent camping opportunities, close to the water, although in some places soft mud makes vehicular travel difficult. One good location is Bachelor Cove, along AZ 188 a little north of Theodore Roosevelt Dam.

Canyon Lake Of Arizona - Land Big Fish

Nestled in the heart of the Superstition Mountains, 51 miles east of Phoenix, lie spectacular Canyon Lake, a rare gem in the desert which grows Gods natural skyscrapers.

Canyon Lake is one of the man-made lakes on the Salt River (Rio Salado) in the Superstition Mountains of central Arizona. A very popular boating area, it is formed behind Mormon Flat Dam.
Rocks visible across the lake were formed by a series of violent volcanic eruptions, which have left their record in the form of three ancient calderas. Little surface trace of these giant craters is left, but the outlines of them can be reconstructed by geological evidence. If one of these were active today, it would be referred to as a "supervolcano". These calderas last erupted approximately 15 million years ago, during what is called the Tertiary period.

Statuesque Bighorn sheep ... Eagles hovering above ...awwww ... Baby ducks ... Serene Fishing ... Camping nearby ... Finally, pontoon (or speed boats) boating amongst nature's immaculate cliffs; a piece of Americanas Grand Canyon right here east of the valley!

Superstition Mountains Arizona - Flat Iron Peak

In earlier days the Superstition Mountains in Arizona were a holy place of the Apache Indian. The biggest of them is the Mountain Of Superstition and east of it there is severe erosion, which plays a major role in the local legend of the mysterious gold mine of the Lost Dutchman. The name of the Superstition Mountains occurred because the legends of the Pima Indians. The Apaches believed that the hole in the mountain of superstition is the passage to the underworld, which is under the Mountain Of Superstition. Winds blowing from the hole are supposed to be the cause of severe dust storms.

The whole area is filled with ancient caves and places where ancient Indians lived, as their presence is evident on many facts. It is still not clear who were the people who inhabited these caves - whether they were Indians Salado or Hohokam. Later, Apache and Pima Indians inhabited the area. The very name of Apache is closely related to the Superstition Mountains.
"The Superstition's" are a place where time has refused to adhere to man's rules, and seems to do its own thing, at times almost in defiance of man. The Superstitions scare visitors with its desert climate, which offers high summer temperatures and lack of water resources. However, there are many climbing paths, among which the most popular is Peralta Trailhead.

If you are a sensitive, this is a place where you will experience one phenomenon after the next, and it can be devastating to the weak of heart. Best know who you are, and have a keen respect for the desert, and if you do not believe in paranormal experiences before you play here, you will after you leave. The Apaches called it the Devils playground.

Main Street Bridge Jacksonville Florida

Jacksonville in Florida is a traditionally hard-working, blue-collar city. It has a gorgeous downtown spanning the St. Johns River and two river walks.

Jacksonville's Riverwalks are among the finest and most scenic in the nation. Lining the north and south banks of the Saint Johns River, the two are connected by either water taxi or by the pedestrian walkways of the Main Street and Acosta bridges. Both Riverwalks offer changing perspectives of the city's downtown skyline, which is split in half by the river. The Northbank Riverwalk is the longest, better landscaped, and most interesting to navigate. It follows the curvature of the river southwest, all the way to the Fuller Warren Bridge (Interstate 95), from which point one can take in a complete view of the entire Jacksonville skyline, connected by bridges. The Southbank Riverwalk is shorter in length, but it also boasts Friendship Park and Friendship Fountain, one of the largest fountains of its kind in the world. Both Riverwalks pass under the Main Street Bridge on their respective sides of the river.

As you walk, cool breezes come in off the water and sometimes manatees decide to play next to the bulkhead. Seagulls fly overhead and will happily fly in for a visit if you've got a cracker.

Jacksonville Acosta Bridge

Although much of Jacksonville is urban, this sprawling northeastern Florida city also has nature and wildlife preserves, historic residential neighborhoods and lots of golf courses. Attractions in Jax, as the locals call it, range from art, science and history museums to a brewery tour, from the Jacksonville Landing entertainment complex, along the St. John's River, to Bronson Motor Speedway. The city's beaches offer soft sand and warm water perfect for swimming, surfing and kayaking.

The original St. Elmo W. Acosta Bridge structure was built in 1921. It was Jacksonville's first road bridge to span the St. Johns River and the state's first vertical lift span. Originally called the St. Johns River Bridge, it was renamed in 1949 for City Commissioner St. Elmo "Chic" Acosta, who convinced voters to approve a $950,000 bond issue for the original bridge. Its replacement opened in 1991, but still bears the Acosta name.

After dark the Acosta is edged in neon purple lights, providing an attractive addition to the night lights of the city of Jacksonville.

High Wheel 'Penny-farthing' Bike

A student of Leonardo da Vinci, named Giacomo Caprotti, created the original design for a bicycle. But a Frenchman named Monsieur Sivrac in the 1790s created the first bicycle. It had no pedals, so you had to use feet to 'run' it.

When most people think about early bicycles, the high-wheelers of the late 1800s come to mind. These early models had names such as the "Ordinary" or "Xtraordinary." In England, these bicycles were also known as "penny farthings" because the large and small wheels were reminiscent of the large one-penny coin and the smaller farthing coin. The high wheel bicycle was invented in 1871 by British engineer, James Starley. The Penny Farthing came after the development of the 'Hobbyhorse', and the French 'Velocipede' or 'Boneshaker', all versions of early bikes. However, the Penny Farthing was the first really efficient bicycle, consisting of a small rear wheel and large front wheel pivoting on a simple tubular frame with tires of rubber.

While the high-wheels were quite efficient, they were also dangerous: the cyclist was very high off the ground and perched precariously over the front wheel. So, while the high- wheelers broke new speed and distance records, they quickly gained notoriety for the dangers involved in riding them. The slightest obstacle in the road could result in a nasty head-first fall. "Headers" or "taking a header" were common terms used to describe an all-too-frequent problem. With a high center of gravity and narrow tires made of solid rubber (which occasionally could roll off their rims), high-wheeled bicycles were designed for speed, not for safety.

Although the mechanics of bicycles have improved over time, the basic concept of this people-powered machine has stayed the same for hundreds of years.
