Kodak sets $1 bln stock buyback

Kodak plans to snap up $1B of its own stock - stock jumps
Eastman Kodak Co said on Tuesday it would buy back up to $1 billion of its stock, driving the photography company's share price up nearly 17 percent from historical lows.

While consumers might prefer to spend their tax rebates on sale items at Wal-Mart, Eastman Kodak is using its tax refund to help buy its discounted stock.
The photography company said Tuesday it is planning to buy $1 billion of its stock largely using a $581 million tax refund resulting from paying too much tax from 1993 through 1998. That $1 billion buys more than it used to since Kodak stock is down by two-thirds over the past eight months. Tuesday, the shares rose 14% to $14.03.
Other companies, though, don't seem to be sharing the Kodak (EK) buyback moment even while the broad market has been dropping.
While the number of announced buybacks is the same as it was this time last year, the dollar value is down 40% from year-ago levels, Dealogic says.
Rather than taking advantage of lower stock prices, companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 cut spending on stock buybacks by 3.2% in the first quarter to $113.9 billion, the first decline since the third quarter of 2003, S&P says. "Companies are very defensive," says Richard Peterson at S&P.

Kodak Uses Its Document Imaging Solutions to Manage Sales Information at drupa

Duesseldorf, GERMANY, June 5—KODAK i1220 Scanners with KODAK Capture Pro Software are being used to quickly and conveniently capture, store and manage data on prospective customers at Kodak’s drupa stand.

Document imaging solutions streamline the process of capturing and storing sales information, leading to more effective and efficient follow up by sales representatives. The i1220 scanners digitally capture information from documents such as forms and business cards, and convert it into user friendly formats, such as TIFF and JPEG. Digital data can be used immediately to easily create lists of sales leads, contact management reports, and other sales related activities.

Kodak to Raise Prices for Paper, Ink Up to 20%

Eastman Kodak Co., the photography company reshaping itself in the digital age, said it will raise prices as much as 20 percent on products including paper, film and printing plates to counter higher raw material costs.

The prices take effect July 1 and will vary by product and region, the Rochester, New York-based company said in a statement May 30, 2008.

Eastman Kodak Co. and Xerox Corp and Drupa 2008

Eastman Kodak Co. and Xerox Corp. will be showing off their latest commercial printing gear and services next week at the world's largest print industry trade show.

Drupa 2008, being held in Dusseldorf, Germany, begins May 29 and runs for more than a week, with attendance expected to reach 400,000.

Drupa's importance has grown to the point where print companies now time and tailor their product development cycles for the quadrennial event, said Kevin Joyce, a Kodak vice president and chief marketing officer of its Graphic Communications Group.

"We really look forward to Drupa,” said Valerie Blauvelt, vice president of Xerox's Production Systems Group. “It’s a huge opportunity for us to talk about how our technology, how our workflow can help customers be successful.”

Kodak’s Image Sensor Solutions Wins EDN Innovation Award in Sensor Category for 2008

On May 07, 2008 Eastman Kodak Company announced that its Image Sensor Solutions (ISS) business has received the 18th Annual EDN Innovation Award in the Sensor Category for the KODAK TRUESENSE Color Filter Pattern. This groundbreaking new technology allows for the development of digital capture devices that take better pictures under low light or reduce motion blur when photographing moving subjects.

“We are honored to receive this award from EDN,” said Herb Erhardt, CIS Business Manager, Image Sensor Solutions, Eastman Kodak Company. “This recognition of the KODAK TRUESENSE Color Filter Pattern acknowledges our continuing advances in digital imaging technology, for both CMOS and CCD products.”

EDN presented the 2008 Innovation Awards in San Jose on April 14, 2008, at the Summit Center. An audience of engineers and engineering managers as well as a panel of EDN magazine editors selected the winning products based on their industry impact, innovation and excellence.

“Every year the difficulty of technical challenges increases, the pressures of schedule, cost, and energy efficiency grow, and the resources available to design teams dwindle. That makes the achievements of this year’s EDN Innovation Award winners all the more impressive,” stated Ron Wilson, executive director of EDN Worldwide. “Selected by their peers in the design community for their outstanding results, these innovators stand in the front rank of the best and brightest electronics engineering has to offer.”

The KODAK TRUESENSE Color Filter Pattern advances an existing KODAK Technology, the Bayer pattern based color filter, that has become a standard in digital imaging. Kodak researchers created the new KODAK TRUESENSE Color Filter Pattern technology as they sought to improve upon the Bayer pattern. The new technology adds panchromatic, “clear” pixels to the red, green and blue elements of the Bayer pattern that form the image sensor array, and enables a 2 times to 4 times increase in sensitivity to light (from one to two photographic stops). This increase provides much better pictures and video in low light conditions than are possible with conventional technology. It also enables faster shutter speeds that reduce motion blur when imaging moving subjects. Low light performance, for both stills and video, is a critical need in mobile phones, which is a major market for the new KODAK KAC-05020 CMOS Image Sensor that utilizes the KODAK TRUESENSE Color Filter Pattern. Kodak CCD products – used today in commercial applications such as Machine Vision and Security – can also benefit from the enhanced sensitivity provided by this new technology.
