Epson Stylus Photo R2880 Printer

For years, the Epson Stylus Photo R2400 has been an overwhelming favorite for a tremendous range of photographers. Producing vibrant color photos and sophisticated neutral black-and-whites, this 13" printer provides considerable punch in its relatively small size. Needless to say, it's a tough act to follow. The newly arrived R2880 delivers both new technology and the features that have made its predecessor popular among so many photographers.
With recently developed Vivid Magenta ink, the R2880 is capable of producing blues, purples and reds previously unachievable. To make sure you get the most out of its extended range, the R2880 utilizes Epson's sophisticated Radiance technology. Radiance produces smoother color transitions than older technology, making prints more realistic than ever before. Along with reduced grain and smooth gradation, Radiance gives you prints whose colors appear consistent whether viewed in a sunlit home or under a gallery's tungsten lamps. The R2880 also improves reliability over its predecessor, adding automatic nozzle checks and a mist collection system to keep ink flow smooth and accurate.

Polaroid PoGo Offers Snapshot Printing

Polaroid's portable PoGo printer offers off-the-cuff snapshot printing - and since it's PictBridge compatible, you can print directly from a camera or a phone.

Polaroid may not be making its famous instant-developing snapshot cameras anymore, but that doesn't mean fans of the instant picture will be left high and dry in the digital age. The company's new PoGo portable pocket printer aims to bring the spontaneous excitement of snapshots to the digital generation. The diminutive printer weighs just eight ounces (without paper), runs off a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and can print full-bleed 2-by-3-inch snapshots in 60 seconds using new Zink inkless printing technology. The quality isn't as high as other photo printers on the market, but at snapshot size it seems to be just fine and since the printer is PictBridge compatible, users can print snapshots using their PictBridge cameras and phones via USB or Bluetooth, with no need for an intervening computer.

The PoGo's Zink paper features a peel-off back (sound familiar?) so users can attach their images to a wide variety of surfaces. The Zink technology uses heat to activate dye crystals embedded in the paper to create the images; the paper offers a polymer coating to protet printouts from scratches and moisture, and the result feels a lot like traditional photo paper. Sadly, no shaking is required to make the images appear.

Polaroid says the PoGos should retail for about $150, and while the models shown so far sport a black casing, the company says the printers will be offered in other colors to increase their appeal. The devices are clearly intended for the consumer and amateur photo crowd rather than serious photographers, but if you're looking for a simple way to plaster vacation snapshots around the office, the PoGo might do the trick.

Kodak continued to build its extensive all-in-one printer line on Thursday with the release of the ESP 5, another multifunction machine built to use its low-cost inks. Like its predecessor the ESP 3, the ESP 5 rolls a flatbed scanner and printer into an attractive black case, but adds a LCD screen for viewing, editing and printing photos without a computer.

The ESP 5 accepts media cards in a wide range of formats, including SD, MMC, MemoryStick, xD, and CF, plus USB thumb drives. Once inserted, pictures can be pulled up and manipulated on its three-inch color LCD screen before printing. For those who would prefer to do the work on a computer instead, Kodak also bundles the machine with more powerful retouching software.

In terms of print specs, the ESP 5 pushes out about 30 pages per minute (PPM) in both color and black and white modes, when used with the lowest quality print settings. It can handle borderless papers down to 4 x 6 inches, and print a photo-quality picture of that size in about 30 seconds.
