Why Shooting RAW files

Camera manufacturers continue to boost the megapixel output of their digital SLRs, enabling them to capture more information and more detail with every new model release. It only makes sense then that you would want to preserve all of that information and detail, right? If you always shoot JPEG files instead of RAW then you may not be realizing your camera’s true potential.
JPEG images emerge from a camera considerably smaller in file size than RAW captures. For many uses JPEGs are convenient and offer fine quality. RAW files are larger and must be processed in software before they can be utilized and shared. So why shoot RAW and have to deal with an extra step when the JPEGs may look just fine? There are a few good reasons that professionals and serious amateurs choose RAW.
Think of your camera as performing two distinctly different functions at exposure. In one step the camera captures an image and in the next step it processes the image into a usable format. If your camera is set to RAW then it performs only the first operation and stores the RAW capture data. If it is set to JPEG then the camera also converts the RAW data into JPEG (a compressed but easier to share) format using camera settings you’ve preselected (white balance, image size, amount of JPEG compression).
What if one of your settings was less than ideal? Say your white balance was set incorrectly, to daylight white balance when you were shooting indoors. The image will be very yellow and need correction. Yes, if the image is an already-processed JPEG it can be corrected in software but that may take some serious fiddling. It also will not be as accurate as if the camera settings were correct in the first place. There will most likely be odd bits of color showing up in highlights and shadows, still.
Now imagine the same photograph had been shot with the camera set to RAW capture. Since the file was not processed in the camera we simply move the file into our processing software, select the correct white balance and it will emerge with accurate color. One simple step has created an image with accurate color and little effort.

Quick Shift Bounce and Expanded Versatility

And because it features a quiet recycle charge, there’s no whine to distract you from your subject.

It also has a large, easy-to-read LCD screen that is about 13% larger than its predecessor’s. Its intuitive control layout makes it easy to control flash functions and configure the settings based on your shooting needs.

The HVL-F58AM flash unit will ship in September for about $500 at sonystyle.com, Sony Style retail stores (www.sonystyle.com/retail), military base exchanges, and authorized dealers nationwide. Pre-orders begin online on Jun. 20 at www.sonystyle.com.

Ethiopia bans nude photo exhibit

Ethiopia has imposed a ban on what had been billed as the Horn of Africa nation's first exhibition of nude photography, the photographer behind the show said on Wednesday. Biniam Mengesha, 28, told AFP he had been planning to show 45 photos at the unprecedented exhibition - titled "Black Diamonds" - in the capital Addis Ababa from Friday through July 4.
"Authorities from the Culture Ministry asked me to submit my photos before the exhibition was inaugurated. Afterwards they said: 'This isn't art, it's pornography,'" Biniam said.

Kodak sets $1 bln stock buyback

Kodak plans to snap up $1B of its own stock - stock jumps
Eastman Kodak Co said on Tuesday it would buy back up to $1 billion of its stock, driving the photography company's share price up nearly 17 percent from historical lows.

While consumers might prefer to spend their tax rebates on sale items at Wal-Mart, Eastman Kodak is using its tax refund to help buy its discounted stock.
The photography company said Tuesday it is planning to buy $1 billion of its stock largely using a $581 million tax refund resulting from paying too much tax from 1993 through 1998. That $1 billion buys more than it used to since Kodak stock is down by two-thirds over the past eight months. Tuesday, the shares rose 14% to $14.03.
Other companies, though, don't seem to be sharing the Kodak (EK) buyback moment even while the broad market has been dropping.
While the number of announced buybacks is the same as it was this time last year, the dollar value is down 40% from year-ago levels, Dealogic says.
Rather than taking advantage of lower stock prices, companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 cut spending on stock buybacks by 3.2% in the first quarter to $113.9 billion, the first decline since the third quarter of 2003, S&P says. "Companies are very defensive," says Richard Peterson at S&P.

Polaroid PoGo Offers Snapshot Printing

Polaroid's portable PoGo printer offers off-the-cuff snapshot printing - and since it's PictBridge compatible, you can print directly from a camera or a phone.

Polaroid may not be making its famous instant-developing snapshot cameras anymore, but that doesn't mean fans of the instant picture will be left high and dry in the digital age. The company's new PoGo portable pocket printer aims to bring the spontaneous excitement of snapshots to the digital generation. The diminutive printer weighs just eight ounces (without paper), runs off a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and can print full-bleed 2-by-3-inch snapshots in 60 seconds using new Zink inkless printing technology. The quality isn't as high as other photo printers on the market, but at snapshot size it seems to be just fine and since the printer is PictBridge compatible, users can print snapshots using their PictBridge cameras and phones via USB or Bluetooth, with no need for an intervening computer.

The PoGo's Zink paper features a peel-off back (sound familiar?) so users can attach their images to a wide variety of surfaces. The Zink technology uses heat to activate dye crystals embedded in the paper to create the images; the paper offers a polymer coating to protet printouts from scratches and moisture, and the result feels a lot like traditional photo paper. Sadly, no shaking is required to make the images appear.

Polaroid says the PoGos should retail for about $150, and while the models shown so far sport a black casing, the company says the printers will be offered in other colors to increase their appeal. The devices are clearly intended for the consumer and amateur photo crowd rather than serious photographers, but if you're looking for a simple way to plaster vacation snapshots around the office, the PoGo might do the trick.

Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs

Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs was developed by the Newseum, the interactive museum of news, in association with Business of Entertainment, Inc., NYC, Cyma Rubin, curator.

In the latter years of the 19th century, Joseph Pulitzer stood out as the very embodiment of American journalism. Hungarian-born, an intense indomitable figure, Pulitzer was the most skillful of newspaper publishers, a passionate crusader against dishonest government, a fierce, hawk-like competitor who did not shrink from sensationalism in circulation struggles, and a visionary who richly endowed his profession. His innovative New York World and St. Louis Post-Dispatch reshaped newspaper journalism. Pulitzer was the first to call for the training of journalists at the university level in a school of journalism. In writing his 1904 will, which made provision for the establishment of the Pulitzer Prizes as an incentive to excellence, Pulitzer specified solely four awards in journalism, four in letters and drama, one for education, and four traveling scholarships.

The first award for photography was bestowed in 1942. The prizes are awarded for distinguished photography in two categories, breaking news and feature photography. The competition is open to all photographers, non-American photographers are eligible if their pictures have been published in a U.S. newspaper during the calendar year. A jury selects three nominees for each category to be submitted to the Pulitzer Prize Board. The board meets each April and selects the prize winners, who are announced at a news conference in the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University.

Look. Connect. And be changed. The exhibition, Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs, shows us with stunning clarity what it means to be human. The pictures draw us in and connect us emotionally to the people whose stories have defined our time.

Each of the photographs, reproduced for this exhibition in large format, won a Pulitzer Prize between 1942 and 2007: Babe Ruth’s last day as a Yankee, the flag raising at Iwo Jima, the student-National Guard conflict at Kent State, the World Trade Center attack.

When you visit the Ohio Historical Center to see Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs, plan on three hours for the complete experience. We suggest you begin with the one-hour video program Moment of Impact. Hear the photographers themselves describe the events that lead to the moment they took their award-winning photographs. Find out what happened to the subjects in the photographs after the pictures were taken.

Children And Capture
The Moment We recommend parental discretion with regard to visiting Capture the Moment exhibition with young children. Kids will easily connect with some of the photographs that feature families and children their own age. Some of these photos capture joyful moments, while others depict dangerous and threatening situations. Those bringing young children to the exhibit should be aware that some of these images may be disturbing. It is important that an adult is along to explain the history and context.

Here are some ideas you can use to fill your home with personal photographs in a fun and stylish way.

Purchase a decent digital camera. You do not need a professional or top of the line camera if you do not have one. A point and click camera in the $150-$300 price range like the Kodak Easy Share or Cannon Power Shot will do just fine.

Bring your camera with you everywhere taking as many pictures as possible. You never know when you will get the opportunity to take that perfect picture. You could find a lovely background and get someone to snap a picture of you. You can find your child in a pensive moment, or in the throes of pure fun. These are great times to pull out your camera.

Evaluate your pictures and choose the ones that show personality and spontaneity. The more pictures you take, the better chance you will have of getting photos that really catch your breath. The great part of taking spontaneous photos with a digital camera is that you can view pictures without processing them, and take more if you need to.

Have your favorite photos printed. Have some blown up to a large size. Have others printed in black and white. Be creative, experiment with cropping and color. There are several online services you can use to have your picture taken. Shutterfly.com is known for printing great enlargements of your snapshots. Photowow.com will turn your photographs into work of art. Art styles available through photowow.com include pop art, collages, and fantasy hand tinted pieces. Art.com also allows you to have your photographs recreated as a pencil portrait, in sepia tone, or on canvas. Another option is to have your works of art recreated by an artist.
