Time Lapse Photography

There's a lot to be said for the persistency of time lapse photography - it makes life rather interesting. Reducing a period of a few hours (like a flower opening to the sun), a few months (like a flower growing or a baby growing inside a mother's belly) or a year (seasonal timelapses, construction work) is amazing stuff.

To learn more about Time Lapse photography, why not try the Wikipedia article. For tutorials, check out the Haworth Village tutorial - it serves as a good introduction as well as a tutorial.
Time lapse software
Taking the photos is all good and well, but you've got two hurdles: Taking a sequence of photographs, and going from photos to stop-animation. Some cameras actually have timelapse photography built in (although I can't remember seeing it in any cameras since the Casio QV-8000 in the late 1990s - why? It’s easy to implement, and all digital cameras have built-in clocks! Come on, manufacturers, you can do better!), but if you aren't that lucky, you have to either take the pictures manually, connect a time-lapse device to your camera (Such as the TC80N3), or use your computer to control the camera. The software that came with your camera often has a 'control your camera from your computer' type piece of software, which normally has a time-lapse function built in.
On the software side, there are loads of good programmes out there. For the Mac, the old classic is iStopMotion. It has 'grown up' into a fully-fledged high-quality piece of software which is easy to use.
Granite Bay software make an application especially for Canon cameras, designed to take and merge the photos into videos.
Of course, you don't have to take the video approach - you can also take very powerful still frame time lapse photos… Like the photo used at the top of this article!
Some inspiration
Check out time lapse photography on YouTube, Google Video.
Highlights: Rebuilding Ground Zero in NYC, Picasso painting, Walking around the Giza Pyramids, Repainting the ice on a hockey rink, a year of seasonal change in Norway, and finally, a time-lapse of a cross-country drive from LA to New York in 5 days.

Contrast in Photos

If you are reading this, you have probably heard people moaning about lack of contrast in one of your pictures. I am sorry about that, but " really " it is one of the most annoying things in the world. The medium of photography allows you to enhance the way you see the world, so you have an option of showing what you would like to show better. When the option is there - why not use it?
This is the picture we'll be working with for now. I know it isn't exactly the best picture in the world, but at least it is bland - it is nothing short of boring. Why? Well - mainly because nothing is the way it should be.
I believe that, in photography, black should be black. White should be white. In most cases, there is no real excuse for having almost-white and almost-black as the darkest and lightest point of your photograph (unless it is part of a photographic effect, in which case this all doesn't apply.)

A very nice tutorial to get the most out of your pictures regarding contrast can be found here:

The 460 Degrees Gallery: Light, Speed and Innovation

Lexus Presents Contemporary Art Exhibition in Four U.S. Cities to Launch All-New LS 460 Flagship Sedan TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- There is no map toinnovation. The path to invention is laid with passion, confidence and, above all, uncommon vision. Those are the guiding principles behind "Lightand Speed" at The 460 Degrees Gallery, a one-of-a-kind contemporary artexperience presented by Lexus in Los Angeles, New York, Miami and Chicago. Sebastien Agneessens, a prominent New York-based curator for thecontemporary arts, curated the multi-media exhibition that brings togethersome of the freshest talents on the contemporary art scene. Shamim Momin, associate curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, served asexecutive consultant. "Light and Speed" features conceptual photography byMiranda Lichtenstein, video art by Pascual Sisto and an architecturalinstallation by Arne Quinze. The 460 Degrees Gallery is hosting gala events, public seminars, premium tastings and presentations by luxury retailers. "The idea of 460Degrees is that there's more to discover beyond what we see or even imaginecan be," says Agneessens. The gallery opened in Los Angeles in October andhas been an instant hit in each city. In New York, 460 Degrees Gallery hadmore than 13,000 visitors during its two-week run. Lexus is mounting "Light and Speed" at The 460 Degrees Gallery toshowcase the launch of its all-new 2007 LS 460 luxury sedan. "We wanted todo something that celebrates reinvention and Lexus' heightened focus ondesign," said Deborah Meyer, vice president of marketing for Lexus. The 460 Degrees Gallery in Chicago will be located at 666 N. MichiganAvenue in Chicago. The exhibition manifesto and further details areavailable at http://www.460degrees.com. A Look Inside The 460 Degrees Gallery A towering vortex of wood. Hypnotic video images of moving cars.Photographs chronicling the age-old quest for higher meaning andself-discovery. As Agneessens put it, entering "Light and Speed" at The 460Degrees Gallery is like "journeying into a dream." The exhibition space is dominated by "Timegate," Arne Quinze's massivespiral structure made of thousands of pinewood planks, an installation thatrequired more than three miles of wood and more than 25,000 nails. Quinze,a Belgian artist perhaps best known for his breakthrough designs for theBurning Man festival, said, "I want this work to be an experience out oftime. Since it's a piece of art you walk into, it goes beyond visualunderstanding. This is an experience of sensuality and of deep feelings." At the base of Quinze's vortex is a video installation byBarcelona-born artist Pascual Sisto, who now resides in Los Angeles."Push/Pull" is his homage to American car culture: on one video screen, akaleidoscopic vision of white headlights approaches in silence; on theother, red taillights speed away. "Living in L.A., most of my best ideascome to me while driving, and my imagery takes shape in the car," Sistosaid. "The notion here is that driving is a meditative state and the carbecomes an extension of one's imagination." Miranda Lichtenstein also explores the nexus between meditation andmachine. In a photographic series titled "The Searchers," the NewYork-based artist documents various paths that people take to discoverhigher consciousness. One image, "Anechoic Chamber," shows a man in asoundproof studio at Bell Laboratories that the Guinness Book once calledthe world's quietest room. "I wanted to create an image of something'undocumentable;' complete silence," said Lichtenstein, whose otherphotographs on view document yoga, meditation and shamanic practices. The 460 Degrees Gallery also presents opportunities for visitors toparticipate in the discovery process. Touch-screen displays featurein-depth artist interviews and take visitors inside the art-making process.Various public events will unfold around the exhibits, including WiredMagazine's "Gadget Lab," a seminar on "The Art of the Suit" by Detailsmagazine and chocolates distributed by Teuscher Chocolates of Switzerland(See website for complete list of events and schedule). In addition, testdrives of the LS 460 and LS 460L will be available to the public on a firstcome, first serve basis beginning February 2 thru February 8, from 10:00a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (test drives unavailable on February 7). Exhibition schedule: Chicago: Feb. 2 - 15, 2007 About the New LS 460 With the launch of the all-new 2007 LS 460 and the LS 460 L, thecompany's first-ever long-wheelbase model, Lexus brings its new stylingphilosophy known as L-finesse to its flagship luxury sedan. Side by side

The National Center of Photography has simultaneously launched two shows — "At Both Sides" and "ositive Processes" which, apparently, have nothing in common except the gallery space they share.

While both are worth visiting, placing them side by side is a regrettable lapse of taste since it is awkward to have disturbing documentary photography from a recent war next to an idyllic demonstration of technical photographic virtuosity defined as "art for art’s sake." But, as often in life, arcadia co-exists with anarchy.

"ositive Processes" occupies the major part of the exhibition. It deals with old printing techniques used in fine art photography in the 19th century: gum-arabic pigment print, bromoil, kalotype, gum print and the like, to all of which one of the photographers, Andrei Medvedev, granted the epithet "noble."Although made in the last couple of decades by contemporary artists, they are "precious" in same sense as antiques; hand-made, complex and often useless, in which all aspects — be it image, technology or material — are equally significant.

"Linen or cotton paper — the difference is minor, but these slight nuances become very important," Medvedev said. "The finest differences in structure and in light reflection, the characteristics of grain in many ways affect the tactics and temperament of photographer." These photographs are works of art rather than documents. To make the whole picture clear, all photographers — Timur Novikov, Denis Yegelski, Medvedev, Yegor Ostrov, Stanislav Makarov, Sergei Sveshnikov, Denis Alexandrov, and Sergei Klimov — are linked with Novikov’s legendary New Academy of Fine Arts. One of the city’s most significant movements in the 1990s, the school advocated and implemented classical aesthetic principles within contemporary art, including the exploration and practice of traditional art techniques. Therefore the subjects of the images are as culturally-charged as their techniques are esoteric: ancient heroes, Ludwig II of Bavaria, nudes, architectural details, vanity still-lives — although there is a good number of marvelous industrial landscapes.

The artistic manipulation results in an absorbing confusion of media: whether this or that image is a drawing or a photograph or even a newspaper cutting.

"In the time of high technologies, everyone can follow in the line of medieval alchemists and, using a wide repertory of professional secrets, find their own definition of beauty," Medvedev said.

But once you step into the last exhibition hall at the center, you discover the total irrelevance of such discourse.

"Both Sides” refers to the two parties in last year's war between Israel and Lebanon. The display features documentary shots by two Russian photographers, Denis Sinyakov (Agence France Presse) and Sergei Ponomaryov (The Associated Press) who observed the conflict. The show is very straight, cool and fragmentary. We don’t see the war as a grandiose narrative, but only as individual stories; we don’t see death but it is always hinted at. We have seen many such images in newspapers, on the Internet or on TV, but the images remain impressive. The most powerful pictures are those catching the gestures and faces of people who emotionally reflect on where they have found themselves, what they are doing or what they have lost — whether it is soldiers taking a smoke, children observing their destroyed playgrounds or women at funerals. Judging by the photographs, the two nations are alike in their mourning of the losses of war, but, to the same degree, differ in regard to its purpose.

"Both Sides" and "Positive Processes"run through Feb. 20 at the National Center of Photography. http://www.ncprf.org

Sony upgrades digital camera offerings

San Francisco (IDGNS) - Sony is upgrading several of its digital still cameras with higher resolution image sensors.

The DSC-W55 and W35 both sport 7.2-megapixel image sensors, which is an upgrade on the 6-megapixel W50 and W30 models currently on sale. Similarly the DSC-S650 and S-700 both offer a 1-megapixel jump over the current 6-megapixel S600 model.
The image resolution bump puts the W35 and W55 at the same level as Sony's W70 model. All three cameras offer 7.2-megapixel resolution while the top-of-the-line W100 model packs an 8.1-megapixel sensor.
Other major features remain unchanged. All four cameras have a 3X optical zoom lens, blur-reduction setting and internal memory so some pictures can be taken without a memory card. They all accept Memory Stick Duo-type memory cards.
The W35 and W55 will be available in the U.S. in February for $180 and $200, respectively. Both the current W30 and W50 cost $200, so the prices represent a drop for the former model and a higher-spec at an unchanged price for the latter camera. The S650 will go on sale in the same month for $150 and the S700 will be available from March for $180.
Sony will begin accepting preorders online from Jan. 23.
Overseas launch plans have not been announced but Sony typically follows with local announcements within days or weeks.

ART DEPARTMENT

Daylight magazine, the little documentary photo journal that could, focuses on the human beings behind global commodities. Its topics range from the abundance of guns in Latin American gang and paramilitary culture (photographs by Heidi Schumann) to the torturous route of diamonds from African mining pits to Manhattan's Fifth Avenue (by Kadir van Lohuizen). Michael Wolf's photoessay on Chinese copy artists doesn't rake muck, but it says a lot about the globalization of visual culture and its attendant devaluation of intellectual property.

Wolf, whose engaging Sitting in China documented that country's endlessly improvised chairs, shot portraits of Chinese artists who spend their days knocking off Western artwork. Their meticulous copies are exported for sale here and abroad. Some of the appropriated paintings are predictable; one artist holds his 400-stroke version of Van Gogh's sunflowers ($5.00 US). Another sits on a disjoint bench with a precisely-slashed copy of a Lucio Fontana ($2.25 US); another stands in a narrow back alley with an almost life-sized knock-off of a nude by painter Gerhard Richter (a princely $27.50 US). Other paintings being shown off are more surprising because they are copies of fine-art photographs—one a monochrome of a Becher building study ($18.75 US), another from a child portrait by Loretta Lux (at $43.75 US, the priciest).
The transformation of high art into commodity is interesting enough. For someone who follows photography, though, the odder thing is that a Western buyer—especially one with no awareness of the originals, let alone a sense of the Bechers' trenchant ordinariness or the calculated vacancy of Lux's subjects—would want painted versions of images that seem to us so patently, austerely photographic.

The effect of changing Loretta Lux's photograph into a painting is even a little chilling. The image is a three-quarters portrait of a redheaded girl wearing a pale blue coat that looks (as is typical with Lux's work) a little too small. In translation the photo loses its eery, manipulated charm; the familiar kitsch of the Margaret Keane school of painting is no longer just a reference. The painted Lux has about the same artistic substance as a big-eyed Keane. It's an object lesson in the way contemporary photography's subtle, referential nature thins the line between artful and banal.

Pentax debuts a pair of 7 megapixel options, the T30 andM30

We spotted that Optio E30 compact camera from Pentax right before CES, but now it has some 7 megapixel company in the form of the Optio T30 (pictured) and Optio M30.

The real hotness is going on in the former: the T30 packs a 3-inch touchscreen LCD, 3x zoom and 7.1 megapixel CCD, along with face recognition for beefing up auto focus and auto exposure, high ISO digital shake reduction and some stylus-based frivolities. Other fun facts include Pentax's claim that the camera is the thinnest to offer a 3-inch touchscreen and 3x optical zoom, along wth a 3200 ISO, SDHC compatibility and 20MB of built-in memory. Pentax lines up most of the same specs for its Optio M30, even including that off-the-chain -- and we're sure incredibly grainy -- 3200 ISO, but instead of a touchscreen, this M30 concentrates on a 0.7-inch thick aluminum body and a fancy auto-macro mode for spiffing up those closeups. Both cameras should be out in March, with the T30 going for $350, while the M30 will run you $200. Peep a couple more angles of these cams after the break.

PowerShot A4605.0 Megapixels 4x optical zoom DIGIC II, iSAPS and 5-point AiAF Wide range of shooting modes 2.0” LCD
PowerShot A5507.1 Megapixels 4x optical zoom DIGIC II, iSAPS and 9-point AiAF Redesigned Shooting Mode dial 30fps VGA movies with sound 2.0” LCD with dedicated Playback button
With the appeal of digital expanding beyond the traditional age bracket, the three new PowerShot models are positioned to meet an increasing demand for no-fuss cameras that every member of the family can pick up and use – from kids to grandparents.
“For novice photographers and first time digital camera buyers, simplicity of use is a crucial factor,” said Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe. “These new additions to the PowerShot range illustrate that affordable, snapshot photography need not mean a compromise on quality.”
Ease of UseBoth cameras have been designed with ease of use firmly in mind. Key controls and buttons are intuitively positioned for fast, fingertip access. A selectable Grid Line Display on the LCDs helps with shot composition, while the 2.0” screen size makes it easy for family members to view photos together without connecting to a PC. Conveniently powered by AA batteries, the cameras offer impressive battery life with up to 11 hours playback on a single charge (with Canon NB-3AH batteries).
A wide range of shooting modes cover most family and social situations, allowing users to shoot without having to worry about camera settings. The PowerShot A550 simplifies shooting even further by bringing the most commonly used Special Scene modes – such as Night Snapshot and Kids & Pets – out of the menu system and onto the camera’s Shooting Mode dial. My Colors allows users to apply photo effects direct from the camera while shooting, with options including Sepia and Black and White.
Both cameras feature a Movie mode for VGA quality clips with audio of up to 60 minutes in length or 1GB file size (whichever is reached first). Movies and photos can be viewed on a TV via the AV out connection.
Direct printingEach camera is PictBridge compliant for instant direct printing to compatible printers. Users can also print ID photos and still images from movies when connected to a SELPHY CP series printer. The handy Print/Share button on each camera allows one-touch printing and hassle-free uploads to Windows or Macintosh systems.
The cameras’ menu systems now feature support for Ukrainian and Romanian, bringing the total number of supported languages to 25.
