St. Augustine Lighthouse Stairs

St. Augustine has many beautiful, historic structures. One of them is the St. Augustine lighthouse. The 165-foot-tall St. Augustine Lighthouse, Florida's first official lighthouse, was built in 1875 to replace the old Spanish lighthouse that had stood at the inlet since 1565.

You should be in good condition to climb the 219 steps to the bright-red observation top of the lighthouse, but, with the exception of the top one-third, there is a landing every 360 degrees of the sprial stairs. There are several places to step aside and rest for a few minutes. On a cloudless day the climb is worth it for the view.

In 2007, the SyFy Network's popular show Ghost Hunters filmed an episode in the Saint Augustine Lighthouse and found that, after a thorough investigation, the lighthouse is, indeed, haunted!

Viva Florida - The St. Augustine Lighthouse

Towering above Anastasia Island, the St. Augustine Lighthouse is one of the most spectacular historic sites along Florida's Atlantic Coast.

The first light station on this site was established by order of Pedro Menendez de Aviles, founder of St. Augustine, shortly after the settlement was established in 1565. Sir Francis Drake, the notorious English "privateer," used the original signal as a guide during his raid against St. Augustine in 1586. The original wooden tower was replaced by a structure of coquina stone in 1683. Work on the St. Augustine Lighthouse we see today began in 1870 and the structure was completed in 1874. The original coquina lighthouse collapsed soon after the new structure was completed.

The lighthouse was operated by keepers who lived in structures on the grounds until 1955, when the light was automated. Visitors can now climb to the top of the tower and take in a spectacular view of the surrounding area.

St Augustine Lighthouse - Old Florida Charm

Near St. Augustine, Florida, the Matanzas River empties into the Atlantic. In 1546, Europeans landed at the Matanzas inlet. The first to come were the Spanish, followed closely by the French, then English, then Spanish again, then Pirates, more Europeans, more pirates, northerners, and so it went. They all arrived by Sea, and they rarely came in peace.

The original St. Augustine Light Station was a watch tower to warn the city of Staint Augustine of impending battle, but as time passed the watch tower was replaced by the need to guide ships safely to harbor. It is estimated that more than 200 shipwrecks lie off the coast.

The 165-foot-tall St. Augustine Lighthouse that exists today was constructed in 1876. It remains a fuctioning lighthouse and aid to navigation.

Skyline Of St Augustine Florida

Founded in September 1565 by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles of Spain, St. Augustine is the longest continually inhabited European-founded city in the United States more commonly called the "Nations Oldest City."

St. Augustine is known for its historic sites, festivals, unspoiled beaches, moderate climate, attractions, and shopping. Some visitors come to experience Fort Castillo de San Marcos or marvel at the Spanish architecture, churches and Flagler College with its Tiffany glass. They also enjoy the parks, carriage rides, boat or walking tours, and one-of-a-kind restaurants.

St. Augustine is a perennial favorite on the "must-see" lists of US destinations in large part because of its pedestrian-friendly historic streets, dramatic 19th-century architecture, and fun pirate vibe.
