Digital Camera Buyers' Guide - Year of the SLR

Many predicted that 2007 would be the year of the digital SLR, and industry shipments confirm the huge growth in DSLR sales. In a time where home sales fell through the floor in the US and gas prices began to soar, digital SLR sales have grown dramatically. In the third quarter of this year digital camera sales increased 22% compared to the previous year, but industry breakdowns show DSLR sales almost doubled in the same period.
That means that this holiday season many of you will be looking for a new digital SLR camera to replace an aging point-and-shoot digital or an earlier DSLR. While there haven't been many new entry-level models in the last year, the $1000 "advanced amateur" models of last year are today's entry-level DSLR. Several manufacturers have also redefined "entry-level" SLR down to $400 and have very capable models selling for that price, including a lens.
Only a few new models have appeared in "Entry-level" this year. We will cover these in a look at entry-level choices. However, the last few months have seen a deluge of new "prosumer" digital SLRs aimed at the photo hobbyist, advanced amateur, and even some pro photographers on a budget. The important thing about the advanced amateur and prosumer DSLR markets is the influence those cameras will eventually have on entry-level models. For that reason, we will explore some of the most interesting features of the new prosumer models.
The digital SLR market has also seen the downward push of pro or near-pro models into the consumer space. A prime example of that is the Canon EOS 5D full-frame SLR. When it was introduced a couple of years ago it was hailed as a true bargain at around $3500. If you look around today, you will find this popular semi-pro model has dropped to a $2499 list price and you can actually find the 5D for around $2000 if you shop carefully. That is certainly close to the $1400 to $1800 prosumer price range, providing an additional option for photo hobbyists or pros looking for a good buy.
If you are shopping for a digital camera but you're not really a photo hobbyist, you might want to start with anandtech.com's overview of digital photography in Digital Photography from 20,000 Feet. In that introduction, they cover the terms and concepts used in the DSLR Buyers' Guide at anandtech.com/guides . If you're already a photo hobbyist then dive in.

Two Book Reviews

Digital Photography: Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks, 3rd Edition
by Rob Sheppard
Wiley Publishing, Inc.
http://www.wiley.com/
ISBN: 0470147660
221 pages, paper, full color
US: $19.99, CAN: $23.99, UK: £13.99

Like other excellent titles in Wiley’s Visual series, Rob Sheppard’s book on digital photography is well organized and makes extremely good use of photos to illustrate techniques described in the text. In some ways, the title of the book may do it a disservice: don’t think that you will only get 100 tips; there are tips and tricks lodged within the 100 labeled tips. Also, the book provides sound advice for taking better photos, be they digital or not.

and
Adobe Photoshop CS3: Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks
by Lynette Kent
Wiley Publishing, Inc.
http://www.wiley.com/
ISBN: 0470144769
244 pages, paper, full color
US: $19.99, CAN: $23.99, UK: £13.99

Photoshop CS3 can be a little daunting to many people new to digital image editing and photo manipulation. This book may be the answer for someone who doesn’t know where to start. It will also serve well for many more experienced users who are looking to expand on their editing repertoire or want to learn how to make use of new features introduced with this version of Photoshop.

Tips on photography

Today I read this very nice photo tip - useful with film, digital still and motion sequence photography - in The Tribune, Colorado

There are times when I desire to do photography but the outdoor weather and light are not cooperative, so I turn to indoor documentary or still life photography.

The common term for this type of photography is "tabletop."

I set up a table to avoid working from my knees. I arrange the elements I want in the pictures, then exploit my creative notions.

I still employ my basic compositional and lighting practices. I compose the elements for eyes traveling from left to right to the primary subject. I prefer positioning the light at a 45-degree angle to my subject. These, however, must not be construed as rules. They simply are my personal choices, recommendations.

I do encourage everyone to keep these types of pictures quite simple and close-up. Often, we cannot see the trees within the forest. Universality comes with simplicity. Simplicity makes the photographs easily read and understood.

However, our way and viewpoint of life today is quite complex. We've speeded up everything, sometimes losing control of ourselves.

So I suggest if you are wanting to do tabletop photography that you start out with few elements, simple composition and carefully placed light, either electronic or ambient.

The more intense the light you use, the smaller aperture and greater depth of field you can achieve. The closer the light, the more contrast it gives. The farther it is from your subject, the more diffused, less contrast you will see in your photograph.

Depth-of-field also is an important tool in this type of photography. The closer you are to the subject, the less the depth of field. Distance from your subject increases the depth-of-field.

After understanding the basics, you can integrate more elements into your photos. Multi-element photographs can be very rewarding and exciting for the viewers.

Paul F. Moloney's monthly series of Photo Tips offers ideas to improve the quality of your photographs.

Moloney has always "wondered" about life, marveled at and admired the beauty God has granted the world -- and "wandered," roamed, roved with his cameras.

Eye-Fi Card

Wireless gadgets, USB gadgets, and wireless USB gadgets generally don’t warrant a second thought, but the Eye-Fi Card is a new wireless product for casual photographers that automates the process of downloading pictures to your computer and uploading them to your photo sharing service. You shoot, it does the rest.

The Eye-Fi Card comes in SD (Secure Digital) format and is aimed at those people who don’t want to mess with cords or bother with using a card reader. In addition, the automation handles resizing the images for online use while also saving them to your computer as well.
Once you set up your Eye-Fi to work with your home wireless network and a service like Flickr (it takes about two minutes), the Eye-Fi will automatically detect and transfer JPEG files to your online account and/or your home computer whenever it’s powered on.
That’s pretty much it, but don’t forget to leave the camera on and turn off its auto-power saving function (the Eye-Fi draws its power from your camera battery). It’s that simple.
The great thing is that the software and hardware is smart enough to accommodate real-world glitches like powering down the camera during a transfer or losing your wireless signal. Both of these happened to me while testing the Eye-Fi and it simply picked up where it left off before the interruptions.
You will still have to download pictures the old-fashioned wired way if you have RAW format files or if you have movies shot with your camera on the card. Eye-Fi simply ignores these file formats. I could not test TIFFs.
The card conveniently comes with a card reader and the setup is handled by simply plugging the card and card reader into your computer’s USB slot. On my Mac, the Eye-Fi Manager application launched Firefox (you have to set Firefox or IE as your default browser, a hassle if you use something else like Safari or Camino) and started the process. Each step was well documented and you are told what is happening.

Read all about it at reviews.photographyreview.com and
check it out: Eye-Fi’s website is here at www.eye.fi.
