Dresden Taschenberg Palace - Celebrate love while it lasts

Countess Cosel (1680 to 1765), born as Anna Constantia von Brockdorff, is one of the most enigmatic figures in the history of Saxony. With her beauty and charm she conquered the heart of Augustus the Strong. When August der Starke brought her as official mistress to his court in Dresden's Residential Palace, one of the most famous love stories in the history of Saxony began.
In 1711 he had the huge, but light and airy Taschenberg Palace built for her. Not just a 'communicating' door but a whole underground passage and an arched passage connected it with his Royal Palace. However, in the opinion of the court, Anna Constantia interfered too much with politics and encountered strong resistance, especially after Augustus had promised to marry her. And the polish aristocracy tried to supplant the Protestant countess with a Catholic mistress.
Countess Cosel's biggest mistake was to fight against being sacrificed for the Polish Crown. She lost. When Augustus fell in love with Countess Maria Magalena von Denoff (Dönhoff) of Warsaw, Poland, Countess Cosel fell from grace and was banished to Pillnitz Castle. In 1715 she managed to flee to Berlin, Prussia, but was arrested as a state criminal and exchanged for Prussian deserters in 1716. Back in Saxony Augustus exiled his former mistress and mother of three of his children to Stolpen Castle, where she was kept prisoner for the next 49 years until her death even though Augustus himself died 32 years before her in 1733.
The bombing in February 1945 left only some fragments of the walls of the Taschenberg Palace. Today the 1995 rebuilt Taschenbergpalais is a five star hotel.

Our Lady's Church of Dresden

Dresden’s Protestant 'Church of Our Lady' (Frauenkirche) has a moving history: In World War II, when air-raids wiped out the city center, the grand church collapsed into a 42 feet high pile of rubble.
The ruins were left untouched until 1994, when the painstaking reconstruction of the church began. Almost completely financed by private donations from around the world, the people of Dresden could celebrate the resurrection of their Frauenkirche in 2005.
The breathtaking baroque churchs is symbol of reconciliation between former warring enemies.

John of Saxony Monument - Dresden Theatre Square

For 125 years Saxon King John 'rides' his horse at the Dresden Theatre Square. Created by John Schilling and erected in 1889, the bronze equestrian monument is exactly at the crossroads of the main axis of the Semper Opera House and the Art Gallery. The base of the monument shows scenes from his scientific work.
König Johann was a linguist and a lawyer, and known as a Dante scholar. Using the pseudonym 'Philalethes', he published a translation of Dante's Divine Comedy.
The Judiciary Organization of 1855, the extension of the railroad network, the introduction of the freedom of trade are mainly to be owed to his suggestion and promotion.
The Dresden district of Johannstadt was named after him.

Faces of Places in Dresden

In the 1990s, since the collapse of the Soviet regime and Germany's reunification, Dresden saw one of Europe's largest reconstruction projects
The reconstruction of architectural beauty sheds the unpleasant memory of WWII and references a more glorious time. It serves not only to reinvigorate a national identity, but also allows the city to compete on a global scale with other European cities endowed with historic architecture.

Semper Opera House Dresden

Dresden's Semper Opera House is the most famous opera house in Germany. Built between 1838 and 1841, the Semper Opera House was closed in August 1944 and was destroyed six months later by the Allied air attacks.
Its reconstruction took a long time, but on February 13, 1985, exactly 40 years after its destruction, the restored Semper Opera House was given back to the Dresden residents and the world.

Frauenkirche Dresden - Church of Our Lady

The Frauenkirche, Church of Our Lady, dominates the skyline of Dresden and you can already see it from afar.
The sacred building was erected between 1726 and 1743. Its characteristic dome, called the "stone bell" because of its shape, collapsed on February 15th, 1945 under the rain of bombs. An anti-war monument during the GDR period, the rebuilding is finished now. Since October, 30th 2005 the steeple of the Frauenkirche overtops the Dresden skyline again.
The reconstruction of this lutheran church is an impressive symbol of international reconciliation after World War II, largely with donations from German and international foundations. The consecration attracted attention throughout the world.
