A library of petroglyphs - Atlatl Rock

There's more to do in Valley of Fire State Park than just looking at red rocks and arches. At Atlatl Rock (pronounced AT-lat-l) a long and steep set of iron stairs climbs up a rock wall to an incredible panel of ancient Native American Indian petroglyphs or rock drawings. The word 'atlatl' in the Nahuatl language refers to a stick, used to propel a spear further than it can normally be thrown.
Don't stop just there though - circle around the rock and you will find a massive library of petroglyphs of hunters, mountain sheep, spirals, birds, men and other objects telling a multitude of ancient stories. Around each monolith new discoveries are to be made.

Square Butte - Navajo Nation near Kaibeto AZ

Northern Arizona has much the same geology as southern Utah, so, same as southern Utah, northern Arizona is prime territory for rock formations.
Roughly halfway between Monument Valley and Lake Powell is Arizona's White Mesa, where spectacular rock formations spring out of the otherwise flat desert.
Square Butte is one of these prominent sandstone formations. Framed by juniper pines, the smooth red and orange striations at the base of Square Butte juxtapose the sharply angled yellow and white crest.

Petrified Fire

Valley of Fire, Nevada
Energy seems to come out of the rugged terrain in Valley of Fire's strange geological formations, created during earth’s violent beginning. Uplifting and faulting of the region, as well as extensive erosion by wind, water, and fire, continued to change the surface over hundreds of million of years.
Once a magical, mystical place to ancient people, this peaceful and quite wonderland of mysterious rock formations, makes its visitor feel better … refreshed physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Nature - THE most eccentric artist

Valley of Fire, 55 miles north of Las Vegas, Nevada is an area with spectacular rock formations caused by earth movements and millions of years of erosion. The oldest rock is estimated to be 600 million years old.
In my imagenation the rock in this image is the petrified face of the legendary southern Paiute renegade indian who used this area as a hideout in the late 19th century.

Vibrant Valley of Fire

The Valley of Fires, about 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas, offers some of the Southwest's most amazing scenery with vivid colors splashed on some of the oldest natural rock formations known to mankind.
The views and colors are spectacular but what really distinguishes this park are the unusual shapes and the notable energy. Visitors are encompassed by the peaceful, enchanting spirit of this land as soon as they set foot in it.

Montezuma Castle - Special in it's own way

Nestled into a limestone recess high above the flood plain of Beaver Creek in Arizona's Verde Valle, stands one of the best preserved cliff ruins in North America.
This 5-story, 20-room cliff dwelling served as a "high-rise apartment building" for prehistoric Sinagua Indians more than 800 years ago.
Early settlers to the area assumed that the imposing structure was connected to the Aztec emperor Montezuma, but "Montezuma Castle" was abandoned almost a century before Montezuma was born

Cowboy at Rest

After the sun has disappeared in the west, a lonesome cowboy takes a well-deserved break in front of the Yavapai County Courthouse in the lovely town of Prescott, Arizona.
This silhouette of a cowboy's adventurous life is a modern, larger-than-life interpretation of a small statue by Solon Borglum.

Born in the USA

Although I have never owned one, motorcycles and particularly the Harley-Davidson� have always interested me. It's history is long and rich, and it is as American as American can get.
Call it temptation, but there's a special aura about a Harley-Davidson�. Some call it Harley mania. Others refer to it as Harley culture.

Ain't No Saguaro In Texas

The saguaro cactus is often used as an emblem in commercials and logos that attempt to convey a sense of the southwest, even if the product has no connection to Arizona, or the Sonoran Desert.
Wild suguaro cacti grow only in the Sonoran Desert in the U.S. state of Arizona, the Mexican state of Sonora, a small part of Baja California in the San Felipe Desert and an extremely small area of California, U.S.
There are no wild saguaros anywhere in such western U.S. states as Texas, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, or Nevada, nor in the high deserts of northern Arizona.
If these adorable "trees" would grow just everywhere they wouldn't be so special.

A Spiky Home

The White Winged Dove has a special partnership with the saguaro cactus. The birds time their migration to the Sonoran Desert to coincide with the blooming of the Saguaro Cacti. The doves rely on saguaros for water and nutrients during breeding season.
On the other hand the cacti rely on the doves for pollination as they go from flower to flower sipping nectar. When the flowers turn to fruit, about the end of June, they are filled with thousands of small saguaro cactus seeds which the doves help to spread as they regurgitate food to their young and spread the seeds through their droppings.

Bird Spa

Fresh water often is in short supply on hot, dry summer days. This water fountain doubles as a bird bath and drinking station. Within ten minutes seven different bird species visited the fountain, one of them was this cheerful male house-finch.
I admired the unique beauty of each one along with their distinctive mannerisms. They seemed to enjoy drinking and splashing with their audience watching them.

Good Morning America

Roosters are nature's somewhat broken alarm clocks. They cock-a-doodle-do all day and all night. Although it doesn't seem like a small animal like this could make a lot of noise these beautifully plumed birds with a pompous strut and a hen house full of chickens, can be heard from a mile away when they crow at 5 or 6 am.

Texture and Light - Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon on Navajo Nation land near Page, Arizona, is the most famous slot canyon in the American Southwest.
Water from above the canyon travels through cracks and caverns in the sandstone until it builds up significant speed near Antelope Canyon. As the flood water rushes and spirals through the canyon formations it continually sands and reshapes the canyon walls into masterpieces.
Wind and water created a awe-inspiring blend of extraordinary colors, stunning shapes, curves, marvelous textures and majesty.
