There's more to do in Valley of Fire State Park than just looking at red rocks and arches. At Atlatl Rock (pronounced AT-lat-l) a long and steep set of iron stairs climbs up a rock wall to an incredible panel of ancient Native American Indian petroglyphs or rock drawings. The word 'atlatl' in the Nahuatl language refers to a stick, used to propel a spear further than it can normally be thrown.
Don't stop just there though - circle around the rock and you will find a massive library of petroglyphs of hunters, mountain sheep, spirals, birds, men and other objects telling a multitude of ancient stories. Around each monolith new discoveries are to be made.
