St Vitus' Cathedral Prague - The realms of 'non-being'

The dream vision in the medieval period was not the privileged experience of saints, martyrs and starving mystics but was the universally encouraged experience of the masses. A Gothic building, like St. Vitus' Cathedral in Prague, cannot simply stop, it has to fade away. The physical presence is gradually withdrawn and the dense material mass is dissolved into the empty air. Contemplating the facades of Gothic cathedrals we have our own sense of fading in to the air, of rising up from our corporeal bodies and receding in to the heavens. The facade guides viewer and dreamer in to the realms of 'non-being'. It introduces us to a sensation, which once inside, will overwhelm us.

Painted glass - Alfons Mucha - St. Vitus Cathedral Prague

With its graceful, soaring towers, the gothic St. Vitus's Cathedral (Chrám svatého Víta) in Prague - one of the most beautiful in Europe - is the spiritual heart of Prague Castle and of the Czech Republic itself. The interior of St.Vitus Cathedral impresses with huge stained-glass windows, e.g. Alfons Mucha's flamboyance, depicting the blessing of Sts. Cyril and Methodius (9th-century missionaries to the Slavs). This soaring panel exemplifies the Art Nouveau decorative style, with its natural themes, bold yet soft colors, and mixture of straight and organic lines. Mucha achieved the subtle coloring by painting rather than staining the glass. Instead of sticking to a more traditional, tightly organized visual structure when creating the window, he used a montage of images that gives an expressionistic effect. Alfons Mucha's gorgeous, unique work of art is something not often seen in a gothic church.

A Forest of Spires - St Vitus Cathedral Prague

Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is a textbook of historical styles: a Romanesque rotunda, a Gothic cathedral, a constellation of Baroque churches and palaces, a Renaissance summer palace, whole districts with histoicizing ‘neo-styles: neo-Gothic, neo-Renaissance, neo-Baroque, neo-Classic,’ Art Nouveau cafes, unfunctional pebble-stone streets and as yet undigested, isolated postmodern structure such as ‘Dancing Building-Gunger and Fred Building’ by Frank O. Gehry and Vlado Milinic. St. Vitus (Katedrála svatého Víta) is the iconic centerpiece of Prague Castle Hradcany. Its Gothic architecture is a masterpiece of architecture, engineering and art and is The Highlight of men's stone-masonry. High and loft, slim and towering, tall with pointed arches and pinnacles, rich and decorated, majestic and awe inspiring, full of light and details - this Gothic masterpiece is a work of art and great beauty.
