Clever mobile enhancements on the rise

BOSTON - The founders of Zink Imaging LLC believe they have two great ideas in one absolute show-stopper. They've created a portable device that makes it ultra-convenient to print photos from digital cameras and phones. And they designed it to use no ink.

That's not to say "hardly any ink," mind you, but zero ink — shorten that and you get "Zink." Instead, the device uses heat to activate minuscule dye crystals embedded in the photo paper.
Not bad for a device roughly the size of an iPod. No wonder founder and CEO Wendy Caswell proclaims that Zink "delivers a magical user experience."
Though months away from store shelves, the product is expected to be among the hottest items unveiled Wednesday and Thursday at the influential DEMO technology show in Palm Desert, Calif.

DEMO is notable because it focuses on emerging technologies and gives their creators just six minutes on stage to explain themselves to a ballroom of investors, analysts and journalists. Past shows have pointed to such trends as sharing photos and blogging.
The show's producer, Chris Shipley, said she doesn't seek particular technology themes in advance. But invariably she notices threads coming together after the exhibitors have passed their auditions and the participant list is assembled. And one of those key topics this year will be ways to enhance the power of mobile technologies.
The ideas will come mainly from companies you've never heard of — such as Buz Interactive, which lets cell phone users incorporate licensed music clips into voice mail greetings — and a few larger tech players.
One of them, Seagate Technology LLC, will use DEMO to introduce a small wireless drive that can store files downloaded over cell phone networks. The product — named DAVE — has to be within 30 feet of a cell phone to serve as its storage annex, using Bluetooth wireless technology. It also works over Wi-Fi or a USB cord to do the same trick with computers. Expected to come out this summer, a 10-gigabyte version should retail for about $150.
Rob Pait, Seagate's director of consumer electronics marketing, contends that DAVE will help turn cell-phone networks into souped-up sources of music and other fancy content. Short video clips, ring tones and little games are mainly what people download now because most cell phones can't store very much.
"You've got a lot of bandwidth available to you," Pait said. "Now people need a place to download the content to."
Zink similarly could help people get more out of the wireless world, although its inkless printing system isn't necessarily for mobile devices only. It's just debuting that way.
Based in Waltham, Mass., Zink was founded in 2005, when private investors acquired many of Polaroid Corp.'s key technologies and researchers shortly after that company emerged from bankruptcy.
Zink's special sauce is the photo paper, which has multiple layers of dye crystals inside and a transparent, protective coat on the outside. The dye crystals are normally colorless but produce a color when they melt.
Cyan (a kind of blue), magenta and yellow crystals — each activated by applying different levels of heat for different lengths of time — are enough to reproduce the full color spectrum. About 100,000 pulses of heat come every second, which means a 2-by-3-inch print rolls out in less than a minute.
Although fax machines and other devices have employed aspects of thermal printing technology before, Zink has mastered ways to incorporate it into an inexpensive yet long-lasting format.
"It allows us to put printers where they've never been able to go before," Caswell said.
Zink plans to partner with electronics makers that would build the technology into handheld printers, which could be linked with or without wires to cell phones and digital cameras. Or some partners might make new hybrid digital cameras that have the printers already integrated, the way Polaroid did with film.
There are no such partners yet, but Zink expects whoever they are will be able to make the little camera phone companion for about $100 and the integrated camera and printer for $200. Zink plans to make its money on the paper: 20 cents a page, or a 10-pack for $2.
Zink will initially target the quick-shoot pictures that people tend to take with camera phones, but that market alone could be big. The NPD Group research firm says 69 percent of mobile phones sold in December had a built-in camera, up from 51 percent at the start of 2006. And earlier research by NPD found that about 80 percent of the pictures taken with phones just sit there — neither sent to anyone else nor printed.
"Fundamentally, everyone will have a camera their pocket," Caswell said. "What we want to do is be the technology that frees the pictures from their captive state."

Panasonic Unveils New Digital Cameras

Following a month of high-profile product releases by a handful of the biggest names in consumer electronics, Panasonic has unveiled eight new digital cameras in the Lumix line.

The eight new DMC models -- the FX30, LS70, LZ7, LZ6, TZ3, FZ8, FX10, and FX12 -- span the cost spectrum from roughly $150 to $350, and offer a minimum of 6-megapixel quality along with Panasonic's Intelligent Image Stabilization system.
Antoinette Marty, an analyst at Current Analysis, said the new cameras are similar to others on the market, but stand out when it comes to their zoom capabilities.
Up Close and Personal
One example is the 7.2-megapixel DMC-FZ8, which replaces the FZ7. It features a 12x optical zoom lens and boasts the Venus Engine III, Panasonic's image-processing engine that can record at a sensitivity setting of ISO 1250 with full resolution.
Three of the new cameras fall into the ultracompact category -- the FX30, FX10, and FX12. Panasonic claims its 7.2-megapixel FX30 is the world's slimmest digital camera -- a mere 22-mm thick -- with a Leica wide-angle lens.
Leica is known among photography professionals for excellent image quality. Panasonic credits the Leica lens with allowing its Lumix digital cameras to take photos that appear to have the same warmth and subtlety as photographs shot on film.
What You Want
The least expensive if the bunch is the 7.2-megapixel DMC-LS70. It's geared toward photography novices and features a 3x optical zoom and 2-inch LCD. It is powered by two AA rechargeable batteries.
Current Analysis' Marty said these sleek cameras fall in line with what consumers want -- ease-of-use, storage capacity, and image quality.
All the new cameras in the Lumix line are available later this month, except for the TZ3, which is available in March.

Digital Photography Tips

Don't take another digital picture until you read this book! Someone has finally gotten into the "secret files" of top photographers and is sharing the information for the first time ever!
"Finally! There's a Fast, Easy, Affordable Way To Access Professional Picture-Taking Secrets And Capture The Best Digital Images Of Your Life!!!"

by David Peterson
A Book To Instantly Transform TheQuality of Your Digital Photographs

Photography is David Peterson's passion

"I'm excited to have a chance to share that passion with you… along with a
new book that I believe can instantly transform you into a better photographer.
I’ve been a photographer using film cameras since I was a little kid. When I
bought my first digital camera, I excitedly opened the box and started taking
lots of images. Eagerly, I transferred my first photos to my computer and
printed them.
Needless to say I was very disappointed with the results. They
didn’t look like the professional photos that I saw every day in magazines. My
camera was expensive enough, why didn’t my pictures look a million dollars?
It turns out there was a very simple answer.
I didn’t know the secrets
the professionals use every day to ensure their images look stunning each and
every time. I found this out when a professional photographer friend of mine
took me aside one day and told me the secrets he used.
I tried them all out
and discovered that my images were MUCH, MUCH better. Not quite at the
professional stage, but looking really good.
There's something you should
know about me. I'm the kind of guy who likes to help out others. When I know
about a great movie, a great bargain, or a great strategy for taking a picture,
I want to share it with other people.
This book is the result of that
philosophy.
I realized that not everyone was as lucky as me; not everyone
has a friend who's a professional photographer. So, to "level" the
picture-taking playing field, I decided to write a book myself

East Side Pride

The winners now have a permanent home

"Take Pride in the East Side" student photography competition was an idea that originated in 2005, materialized in 2006 and will soon have a permanent home at the Texas Tech Southwest Collections/Special Collections Library.
The exhibit will go on display at the Southwest Collections on Wednesday and remain up through March 10.
The concept of the exhibition originated by a committee as an attempt to bring attention to the positive aspects of the east side of Lubbock while also encouraging children to get behind the lens of a camera, said Dawn Wolf-Taylor, coordinator of education, programs and exhibits at the Underwood Center.

Jontel Perry won the "Take Pride in the East Side" photo competition with this picture. The exhibit opens Wednesday at the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech.
"We tried to engage students from around the city," Wolf-Taylor said. "We told art teachers, neighborhood centers, churches and youth groups."
More than 150 photos were submitted by students 10 to 14 years old, and 40 were chosen to be included in the exhibit, she said. This was a $10,000 project, which covered the expense of framing the photographs and also the cost of workshops held for the students, she said.

Provided by Underwood Center
Jonathon Ibarra's photo for Take Pride in the East Side photo competition is called "Laffy Daffy."
About 25 percent of the children who submitted a photo attended the workshops, she said.
"These children received lessons from really important photographers," Wolf-Taylor said. "They took them around to different sights on the East Side and helped them look through the lens."
The photographers who worked with the children were really impressed, she said.

Zachariah Vega's photo for Take Pride in the East Side photo competition.
"It will be a really nice document of this part of the community for the future," Wolf-Taylor said. "It's a very interesting perspective, and it's a thing that will be very valuable in the future. People will be able to look back and see how the East Side was."
After being exhibited, the photos will be removed from their frames and placed into the permanent Southwest Collection, which will remain available for viewing and also to be checked out, Wolf-Taylor said.
The students who participated by submitting photographs for the exhibit, their parents, sponsors and other participants will be honored at a reception at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Southwest Collection.

History in black and white

A photography exhibition brings alive a period of history.

For four days between January 27 and 30, the University of Hyderabad community and citizens of the twin cities were treated to a rare exhibition of over 250 archival photographs. They were not only `moments frozen in time but... aids to understand a country's multifaceted history'.
`Representing India Women 1875-1947,' came in five sections. Visualising the Family, The Learning Experience, Worlds Beyond, The National Movement, and finally Towards the Midnight Hour. Additionally, there were four panels on specific women: social reformer, Pandita Ramabai, two early women photographers, Debaleena Mazumdar and Annapurna Dutta, a pioneering doctor Dwarkabhai Kamlakar and school teacher Sarah Massey.
The foyer of the University's DST auditorium was the venue. At the inauguration, Rama Melkote, Meenakshi Mukherjee and Malavika Karlekar of Center for Women's Development Studies, underlined the importance of the exhibition. The exhibition was the brainchild of Malavika Karlekar.
Her 2005 publication Re-visioning the Past: Early Photography in Bengal 1875-1915', OUP, provided the base for the 2001 exhibition. The idea of the travelling exhibition of these photographs was then born. The ICSSR, the NCERT, the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies as well as over twelve noted organisations have supported the present exhibition.
The exhibition has now travelled to Ajmer, Mussoorie and Dehradun. From Hyderabad, it would move to Chennai and later to Mysore, Bhubaneswar and Guwahati. "The response of the audience everywhere has been very rewarding. The effort now is to try and incorporate some of the visuals in the existing courses in history, culture and gender studies. The problems are many: lack of awareness today about the Freedom Struggle and the history of the colonial rule in India as well as a demand to get the captions translated into Indian languages," Karlekar said.
"We should not be over-ambitious. We should think of the target audience," she concluded
At the DST auditorium, the panels with rare black and white photos looked fantastic; chosen and curated by Karlekar, each picture captured the spirit of the era. Changes in pose, posture, backdrop and contexts lent historical and cultural significance to the portraits.
You marvelled at the march of the Indian women and shared their trials and tribulations, their triumphs and tragedies. From the coy Bengali bride sitting next to the successful ICS husband, from the intrepid Rokeya Sakhawat Hussain to the legendary singer M.S. Subbulakshmi, from the brave Kadambini, the first woman doctor of the British Indian Empire to Kuntala Kumari, the charismatic Oriya poet and feminist, each spoke in many voices and carried many resonances. They underlined the significance of the women's experience in the making of the modern Indian nation.

Robert Heinecken: Magazines at Smart Museum

CHICAGO.- The David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art presents Robert Heinecken: Magazines, on view through March 11, 2007. For over four decades, the late Robert Heinecken was a trenchant observer of social and sexual politics. Although he rarely used the camera himself, he made innovative use of photography by combining found photojournalistic and advertising images into new works. In the 1960s, he put this strategy to provocative use with a series of reconfigured magazines laden with highly charged content, which he then sometimes put surreptitiously back into circulation. For example, in his series Periodical #5, made at the height of the Vietnam War, Heinecken took magazines such as Glamour and overprinted the images of fashion models with horrific images of young Vietnamese soldiers, much to the surprise of newsstand consumers who had purchased his disruptive juxtapositions of pop culture and politics. This exhibition gathers a rich selection of these and other magazine-based works, including works from the Smart Museum's collection and the artist's archive. Curator: Stephanie Smith, Smart Museum Director of Collections and Exhibitions and Curator of Contemporary Art.

Walk Through a History of Toronto's Photography

These days Toronto's photobloggers are a busy bunch: they're giving lectures, hosting Wii parties, and, of course, filling the internet with thousands upon thousands of unique views of our city. While the City's official "Cultural Renaissance" is contributing a great deal to the general excitement we feel about the city these days, the work of Toronto's photobloggers is equally responsible for helping us re-imagine our city in exciting new ways.
Of course, photobloggers haven't alreadys been around, so if you want to see some older photos of Toronto you've got to head to the City Archives. Right now is a great time to do just that, because a a new exhibit has opened showcasing pictures taken of the city over the course of its history. Take control of Natural Lightning

One of the most useful tools a photographer has is natural light, but without reflectors or diffusers, that light may not be exactly where you need it, or it may be too harsh. Enter California Sunbounce light modifiers and reflectors.

Photographers around the world are learning to control environmental light as easily and thoroughly as studio lighting with California Sunbounce products. Made specifically for outdoor use, these modifiers and reflectors are extremely lightweight and crafted from the strongest fabric and materials. California Sunbounce makes it easier than ever to get studio results on location — you get all the control of studio shooting, but you’ll never have to wait for them to recharge like typical flash units. And while these reflectors and modifiers are perfect for natural lighting situations, they also supplement your current lighting kit in ways you may not have imagined in indoor situations.

Exhibition shows Holyrood at work

A photographic exhibition has opened at Holyrood showing a variety of visits and engagements which have taken place since the start of devolution in 1999.
The display, in the Garden Lobby, features 24 pictures taken by the Scottish Parliament's photography team.
The Presiding Officer, George Reid, said that a picture says a thousand words and the exhibition captured a working parliament in action.
The snaps can also be seen in virtual form via the parliament's website.
Exhibition of the Scottish Parliament at work from 1999 to 2007
Mr Reid said: "From the first meeting of the parliament on the Mound to our new surroundings at Holyrood, it highlights the work of MSPs and some fascinating visitors from around the world."
The pictures include a shot of the swearing in of Winnie Ewing MSP in 1999 who was the oldest member of the new devolved parliament.
Also marked are the 2001 and 2005 visits by South African President Thabo Mbeki, the first head of state to address members, and the President of Malawi, His Excellency, Dr Bingu wa Mutharika.
As well as visitors, the exhibition includes pictures of committee visits outside Edinburgh; the launch of the parliament's e-petition system and the procession down the Royal Mile to mark the official opening of the new parliament building in October 2004.

Vietnam and back: Photographer's exhibit shows country of dramatic contrasts

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
A wall-sized, colorful image of a towering dragon and phoenix in a Ho Chi Minh City amusement park is juxtaposed with that of a flip-flop-shod tourist photographing a downed Chinook helicopter mounted on a brick platform on a scantily forested hill.
It is not often that an art exhibition effortlessly, almost unintentionally, straddles realism and surrealism while exploring the current ramifications of an historic event and relates obliquely to a heated contemporary conversation.
"Multiple Entry Visa: To Vietnam and Back," at Silver Eye Center for Photography, is such a show.

The photographs were taken by Chicago resident Howard Henry Chen, who was born in Vietnam and moved to the United States with his family in 1975 when he was 3 -- "a few weeks before the tanks rolled in."
Chen, a Boston University journalism and political science graduate who's worked at several newspapers and recently earned an MFA, has been visiting Vietnam for half a dozen years. Before his first trip back, his parents contacted relatives with whom Chen hadn't been in touch for nearly 30 years. Loosely labeling them all "cousins," he now tours the country with them.
