New Orleans Sacred Heart Of Jesus

The St. Louis Cathedral is one of New Orleans' most notable landmarks and one of the cultural and architectural treasures of the French Quarter. No trip to The Big Easy is complete without a visit to the Cathedral of Saint Louis King of France, the oldest Catholic cathedral in continual use in the United States (since 1794).

In the rear of the Cathedral-Basilica is one of the most delightful spots in the Vieux Carre - St. Anthony's Garden. This little island of green, with its noble oak, sycamore and magnolia trees in the shadow of the wall of the sanctuary, is a continual delight. Saint Anthonys Garden is dominated by 'The Sacred Heart of Jesus', a white marble statue of Jesus Christ with His arms upraised. At night, floodlights project an imposing shadow from the Sacred Heart of Jesus sculpture onto the Cathedral wall - a particularly eerie and awe-inspiring sight. That Jesus knows how to make an appearance!

Although it is a Catholic house of worship, the rich history and beautiful design of St Louis Cathedral appeals to visitors of all faiths and nationalities. This excellent European-style Church which looks like Cinderella's castle at Disney is an especially calm opportunity to reflect and consider life's puzzles. Nola's Jackson Square surrounding the St. Louis Cathedral just adds to this spirit.

New Orleans Balcony Gardens

When you walk the street of New Orleans don't forget to look up! Hanging plants are everywhere which makes the balconies seem like vertical gardens and works of art. Boston ferns are a staple of New Orleans' beautiful balconies and southern porches.

There is just something about New Orleans - especially its gardens. Amazing plant displays, hanging baskets on the decorative balconies, are around every corner. However, the charming narrow streets and uneven brick sidewalks of the French Quarter have an uncanny ability to trip up the pedestrians while they admire a balcony's hanging plants.

Every season highlights its flora and fauna in the French Quarter, from the heat-loving gardenias and the night-blooming jasmine to the mockingbirds feasting on edible orange fruits of pyracantha on a cold winter's day. Rarely is there a time of lackluster in Vieux Carré.

New Orleans CCC Bridge

The Crescent City Connection Bridge is part of the New Orleans skyline, and the bridge is vital to understanding this beautiful city. It's very much an icon of The Big Easy. Strong, straight and robust, yet with a gentle grace that's nice to look at, the CCC is a staple of New Orleans. It separates the West Bank from the East Bank. It crosses the mighty, muddy Mississippi!!! It separates Algiers from the rest of New Orleans.

Easy on, easy off, dependable, graceful, well-traveled, and experienced - those are great attributes for a resource you might call on at times when you need to get across the Mississippi. The drive over the bridge is not perfect. It's a terrible bottleneck sometimes. There is a certain pride that goes along with saying, "THATS THE CONNECTION!!!!, I DRIVE THAT MONSTER EVRYDAY!"

Ride across the Crescent City Connection at night, as a passenger, and take a good look at that NOLA skyline. It's beautiful, and the bridge offers an excellent view.

New Orleans - City Of Iron Lace

The lacy, wrought iron balconies overlooking the narrow streets of the New Orleans French Quarter are evocative of another time, another place and they are among some of the most photographed attractions in the City.

The balconies of New Orleans have seen a lot in their centuries of grandeur. Most of them are made of wrought iron in a process that precedes the age of factory production; the iron was literally scored and hammered by hand, and much of the energy of the artist still seems to linger on in the irons strength and endurance. Can it be possible that some blacksmiths continue to be proud of their work from beyond the grave?

So the next time you visit New Orleans, as you walk through the bustling streets and quaint alleys of the old Quarter, remember to look up and wave. You might just be greeting a visitor from the past, a revenant spirit from another domain!

New Orleans Crescent City Connection Bridge

The Crescent City Connection Bridge (CCC), formerly the Greater New Orleans Bridge (GNO), refers to twin cantilever bridges crossing over the Mississippi River in the parishes of Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Bernard. The Crescent City Connection Bridge ranks the fifth-longest cantilever bridge in the world and the farthest downstream bridge on the Mississippi River. The bridge is 4,093 meters in length; 28 meters wide (westbound) and 16 meters in width (eastbound).

Development of the Crescent City Connection Bridge (CCC) began in 1954 and it was opened in 1958. At that point of time, it was actually the longest cantilever bridge in the world. The daily traffic load on the eastbound part is roughly 180,000.
Construction on the GNO Bridge No. 2 began in March 1981. Traffic first crossed over the GNO Bridge No. 2 in September 1988.
Both bridges have been in continuous operation since 1988 as a unitary bridge facility having a total of eight general traffic lanes plus two Transit / High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes. The Crescent City Connection ranks as the fifth most traveled toll bridge in the United States, with the annual traffic volume exceeding 63 million.

Following a 1989 public contest to select a name for the bridges, a Louisiana Legislative Act officially designated the bridges as the "Crescent City Connection."

New Orleans - The Big Easy

The inherent culture of La Nouvelle Orleans has its earliest roots in French culture. The city was founded in 1718 by explorers Iberville and Bienville, overlain by Spanish and then modified by infusions of residents from the Caribbean Isles, all before the Americans took over in 1803. And that's why many first-time visitors - and year-round inhabitants - say New Orleans feels more like Europe than the USA.

Known as "The City that Care Forgot," "The Crescent City," "America's Most Interesting City," and, of course, "The Big Easy," New Orleans offers a lifestyle that is worlds apart from the hustle and bustle of most metropolitan areas. Situated amidst Lake Pontchartrain on the north, the Mississippi River on the south and wetlands all around, the city is a bit of an island itself, a factor that has allowed local traditions to grow and develop during the past centuries so that New Orleans has a quirky character all its own.

In New Orleans' oldest neighborhoods are early examples of French and Spanish masonry buildings intermingled with newer additions. From the cast-iron filigree of the French Quarter to the Greek revival stateliness of the Garden District, the wonderful variety and volume of historic houses make the streetscapes of New Orleans a distinctive backdrop for everyday life.

Church Rock Arizona - Stairway To Heaven

Church Rock (elevation 5580 feet) on the Navaho Indian Reservation in Arizona is a prominent feature north of US Route 160 a few miles west of the Indian Reservation Route 59 intersection.

If you had been standing around this spot millions of years ago you would have been buried in rock. But with a little patience (just for a few million years) you could have watched the rock erode around you. The resistant dikes and volcanic necks eroded more slowly than the surrounding sedimentary rocks leaving Church Rock as we see it today.

De Gaulle And His Troops

While you can catch a glimpse of the valley from the highway, the best way to explore the Valley of the Gods in Utah is on the narrow, graded-gravel track of the Valley of the Gods Road (County Road 242). The road bumps, grinds, rises, and falls for 17 miles, winding past most of the dozen or so major formations that climb above the valley floor.

Some of the formations are named for obvious reasons: Battleship Rock does indeed look like a massive - albeit rusty - ship mired in dry dock, and Setting Hen is a knockoff of a roosting fowl. Balanced Rock, though, bears a striking resemblance to a Lady in a Tub, which is its other name. Eight miles into the valley are Castle Butte and De Gaulle and His Troops, a formation that obviously inspired a lot of imagination.

The valley's lack of designated trails is not a drawback. April and May are the perfect months to visit. Several television programs including Airwolf and Doctor Who have featured the the scenic area.

The American Southwest

The American Southwest contains more than its fair share of natural wonders. The region is home to a wonderful and vibrant mix of anglo, latino, hispanic, and American Indian traditions making it one of the most diverse, interesting, and picturesque corners of America with regards to history, landscape and culture.

Contrary to the Southwest's image as a sprawling desert, it is one of the most geographically diverse regions in the United States. Beginning at the high elevations of the Wasatch and Rocky Mountains the landscape descends into dramatic bluffs and mesas before emptying out on the flatlands of the Rio Grande. The dry climate and dramatic red rock landscapes help tie the region together despite the dramatic differences in elevation.

The stunning red mountains, buttes, mesas, canyons and cliffs, the gorgeous desert and tumbleweed tumbling is all so strikingly different, stunning!. The dramatic landscape calls for an emotional response that runs through your body.

Valley Of The Gods - Escape From Civilization

If you are in the Valley of the Gods area in Utah this is one trail that you should not miss. The valley springs up out of nowhere with a sight to see at every turn. It almost feels like a national park but it hasn't gotten to that step yet. There are pull outs to stop and admire the scenery, but there are no signs to point out the names of the features.

There are no tour busses or tourist traps in the area, no gas stations, gift shops, coffee shops, washrooms, and rarely any other tourists. Most are hesitant to bring their vehicles on the trail because it can be very rough and bumpy and subject to washouts. Some areas have rocks exposed from the shifting sands and scraping bottom is a strong possibility. However, the solitude and serenity of the area is well worth the extra hour it takes one to get through it.

Valley of the Gods is an eerie, desolate, magnificent landscape. If you want to escape from civilization, look no further.

Papa Was A Rolling Stone

While just about everyone has heard of Monument Valley or seen it in the movies, few have heard of the Valley of the Gods, 40 miles up the road in Utah.

Warriors frozen in time is how Navajo legends are said to describe the eerie, red rock spires in Valley of the Gods. In fact, the rocks forming this stark landscape are much older than the Navajo. This rocky valley lies at the base of Cedar Mesa, and the rocks were deposited by the invasion of a shallow sea about 250 million years ago. Over time, the water retreated, and the ancient sandstones and shales gradually turned red or purple as the iron in the rocks mixed with oxygen to form rust.

Valley of the Gods is the kind of place where you want to park the car and go exploring. There are no marked trails, and: Watch out for rattlesnakes in the underbrush! Or, drag out the beach chairs, books, something cold to drink and just be.

Owachomo Bridge - Natural Bridges Utah

Natural Bridges National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of the Four Corners boundary of southeast Utah, in the western United States. It features three natural bridges, one of them is the second largest natural bridge in the world, carved from the white Permian sandstone of the Cedar Mesa Formation that gives White Canyon its name.

Owachomo Bridge is the smallest and thinnest of the three natural bridges here and is commonly thought to be the oldest. We may never know for certain, as each of the bridges certainly have eroded at different rates. Regardless of its relative age, Owachomo Bridge is certainly the most fragile and elegant of the three spans, and an awe inspiring feature of erosion. The iconic bridge is 32-meter High and 55-meter long, while only 3-meter thick.

Natural Bridges National Monument is the first ever international Dark Sky Park as designated by International Dark Sky Association in 2007.

Epic Monument Valley

Monument Valley (Tse Bii' Ndzisgaii is the Navajo (Dine) term, which means Valley of the Rocks) is a vast landscape of sandstone buttes and mesas and free-standing formations on the Colorado Plateau. A part of the Navajo Nation Reservation, it was occupied by Paleo-Indians from 12,000 BC, the Archaic hunter-gatherers from 6,000 BC, Anasazi farmers from 1-1300 AD, Paiutes from 1300 AD, and finally the Navajo. The Anasazi left behind some ruins and a number of petroglyphs which are shown in this section.

Many of the huge rust-colored sandstone buttes, mesas and other formations are nearly 1,000 feet tall. There is a haunting sensation that they are waiting for something momentous or cataclysmic to happen. It seems they hold tremendous power, like great slumbering animals frozen in time. They have been waiting, in silent majesty, for millions of years.

Monument Valley's amazing scenery, seen in so many films, truly lives up to its reputation for spectacular views.

Monument Valley - The Thumb

Each moment of the day casts a new light and new shadow onto Monument Valley on the state line from Utah to Arizona. This, this, this wonderful place should be the Mecca for all Americans who want to appreciate the beauty of their country - it is the apogee of the American West and a treasure for the world. However, despite its pedigree and its knockout beauty, Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park gets relatively few tourists: 500,000 a year, compared with the estimated 5 million for the Grand Canyon. And most of those tourists are from overseas.

Breathe the air, feel the red silt slide between your fingers, listen quietly, contently and enjoy this sabbatical from the rush of civilization and take time to relish the fleeting moments you have in your little flesh and bone vessel traveling through this wonderful life: at Monument Valley.

The Thumb is a free standing spire apart from Camel Butte. This formation also looks like a cowboy boot and is often called 'John Wayne's boot'.
