What is a color profile?

A color printer profile is a small software file that describes how ink interacts with a specific type of paper, within a specific printing system. In this case, your printer. Using the right ICC Color Profile for your printer is one of the easiest steps you can take toward better prints. Your print driver will use the profile to adjust the output of ink to match the colors, contrast, and brightness in the picture file. The result is better, more consistent, even amazing prints.

Color Profiles for Beginners

Profiles are quite important to getting good prints, especially with the variety of papers available and pigmented inks are far more finicky than dye inks. With digital printing becoming so popular and commonplace and with the advances being made in digital printing in the last few years, profiles are becoming quite readily available. Most of the major paper manufacturers have profiles available on their websites for their media with different printers. Epson also has profiles on their website for some of their papers. These manufacturer profiles are generally good but not as good as custom profiles. If you do some searching around on the net you can find better ones available that people have made.

Making your own profiles is good as you''ll get decent results from scanner based profiles. But to get really top notch results you need to use a spectrophotometer which reads the prints directly and is much more accurate than a scanner. NO! I'm not saying you need to run out and buy one.

Icc Profiles and their Use

Profiles are simply look-up tables that describe the properties of a color space. They define the most saturated colors available in a color space; i.e. the bluest blue or
deepest black your printer can produce. If you don't have a profile, the trio of Red, Green, and Blue values (or CMYK) that make up a color have no particular meaning — you can say something is blue, but not exactly which shade of blue. Accurate profiles are the key to a color managed workflow. With accurate monitor and printer profiles, your prints will closely match what you see on your monitor. Without profiles, you need to rely on trial and error combined with good old-fashioned guessing.

Photography and Privacy

The publication of intrusive photography is not a new phenomenon. Back in 1927, after his solo flight across the Atlantic, Charles Lindbergh found himself the subject of intense media interest the likes of which had never previously been seen. The use of harassing and in some instances offensive tactics by photographers are not new either. In 1932 Lindbergh's son was murdered and photographers broke into the funeral home to photograph the body.[1] However, the activities of these photographers or 'paparazzi'[2] are increasing as the public appetite and demand for such photographs and associated stories reaches levels previously unseen. It seems that a media ethic has developed which treats real lives as soap opera, daily fiction to be reported for the entertainment rather than the edification of the public.

Worldwide, the campaign for the protection of privacy is growing; intrusive photography is one area which appears to pit the privacy of the individual against freedom of information and the freedom of the press. Such a debate is ongoing in the US. Two American television stars Paul Reiser and Michael J Fox have testified to the Congress Judiciary Committee to the dangerous and intrusive conduct of photographers including chasing by foot and car and home surveillance. Fox told the panel that photographers had intruded at his father's funeral and entered a hospital to take photographs of his newborn son.

More on Copyright

On July 21, 2005, Judge Lewis Kaplan of the SDNY issued an opinion (only available over the weekend) in Mannion v. Coors Brewing Co., 2005 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 14686. Judge Kaplan is a scholarly, brilliant jurist whose opinions always contain a lot of learning, in this case about photography. Mannion is a worthy round two for yesterday's discussion.

In Mannion, a freelance photograph took photos of basketball star Kevin Garnett for SLAM magazine, which published them in conjunction with an article in the December 1999 issue. In December 2001, an ad agency for Coors beer used a manipulated version of one of Manning's photo for a "comp board" on which a picture of a can of Coors was superimposed along with the slang phrase "Iced Out." Permission was obtained for this internal use only. The rest of the story could be filled in by anyone: an ad is later generated and used without permission as a billboard that is alleged to capture the look and feel of Mannion's photo.

Validity of the copyright and access were undisputed, the only issue being substantial similarity. The court denied most of defendant's motion for summary judgment in a lengthy discussion of the protectible elements in photographs and their infringement.

On the question of originality, one distinction Judge Kaplan made (and that was noted in comments on the first posting), was between "decisions that a photographer makes in creating a photograph and the originality of the final product." Judge Kaplan recited language from prior decisions about choice of film, camera, and the like, but found that "the fact that a photographer made such choices does not alone make the image original. ... Protection derives from the features of the work itself, not the effort that goes into it." Interestingly, in further delving into the scope of originality (in order to determine how far plaintiff's copyright reached), Judge Kaplan relied on an English copyright treatise, Sir Hugh Laddie's "The Modern Law of Copyright and Designs" (2000).

Judge Kaplan also reviewed a question not touched on last week, rights over the subject of the photo, questioning the oft-cited principle that copyright confers no right over the subject of the photo, and refining the principle so that "to the extent the photograph is original in the creation of the subject, copyright extends also to the subject. Thus, an artist who arranges and then photographs a scene often will have the right to prevent others from duplicating that scene in a photograph or other medium." Obviously, the idea/expression dichotomy has a large role to play in all this, and there is a very extensive discussion of that principle, in which Judge Kaplan joined those who have come to reject Nimmer's meaningless "abstractions test."

This was all prelude to the infringement analysis, an analysis which includes a helpful discussion of the total-concept-and-feel versus more discerning observer approaches, although not choosing one since he denied defendant's motion, sending the case to a jury.

The Law for Photographers

Do I Need Permission?
Before you take that photo, you may need permission for the following: Photographing buildings, works of art, or other copyrighted items; Photographing people; Photographing on public or private property. Digital World: Expanding your vistas

Do it yourself Web page markup programs - the ultimate example being Apple's iWeb (http://www.apple.com/ilife/iweb) - have made it simple for people who seize up at the sound of computerese acronyms like HTML to produce beautiful Web pages. Big blow to professional Web site authors - who needs 'em anymore?

Digital cameras that can do photos and movies have put the power of professional presentation into the hands of the common folk. One click photo programs like the free Picasa (http://picasa.google.com) - and now the free 3D drawing program Sketchup - http://sketchup.google.com - are doing a number not only on photo developing establishments, which are dropping like flies - but are giving professional graphic artists a run for their money, as average users decide they can save money and do it themselves.

Guide to Careers In Photography

Introduction
When Joseph Nicephore Niépce created the first photograph in the summer of 1827, he did not just capture the world --he changed it. Since that time scientists, inventors and artists have improved on the processes for preserving images. We are exposed to photographs from breakfast to bedtime. They are on our milk cartons, our driver's licenses, on billboards and in our albums. Yet for all our daily familiarity with photos, nothing, in nearly 200 years of their existence, has managed to diminish the wonder, power and magic they still evoke within us.

There were around 131,000 photography jobs in the year 2000 and the number is expected to grow at a rate of about 10 to 20 percent over the first decade. The character of these jobs, however, may be changing. With the advent of digital photography and the popularity of electronic forms of news and entertainment, individuals seeking a photography career will be seeing demand for their talents shifting in new directions. Most photographers are employed in television, mailing and reproduction services, newspapers or as portrait photographers. But, regardless of where the work is, we will continue need and depend on individuals with creativity and vision to help us to see ourselves.

Painting with Light

With light painting you have the opportunity to create a unique or unusual lighting; or varying degrees ... With light painting you have the opportunity to create a unique or unusual lighting; or varying degrees of light and dark in the same image by how long you lay the light on each area.

The term "Painting with light" is confusing:
The generally accepted meaning as used by interior photographers,is use multiple flashes to equate indoor light with daylight from windows-to have your camera on a tripod, shutter on time exposure(locked open) and you walk around the room firing a hand-held flashgun(strobe) to get an even lighting, determined by flash meter.
The other type of lighting is akin to picasso drawing the outline of a bull with a flashlight,in the dark - the highlighting of specific objects (flowers, a building, a tree, etc.) with a beam (or multiple beams) of light.

Just go to Daveblackphotography.com. Thats what it looks like. It's been done for 125 years at least. Quite simple and quite effective actually. It looks interesting and produces gorgeous photos.

Light Painting

Light Painting is a photographic technique where a very slow shutter speed (1 sec.+) is used in conjunction with several mediums of light to produce surreal, random images. Light Painting is purely experimental and unique, with any number of possible outcomes. Digital cameras make the technique much easier than traditional film camera versions, due to the ability to instantly review the picture. Light sources can include strobe lights, flash lights, cigarette lighter flints, anything burning, and so on. The finished pictures can be manipulated in digital versions with great ease to produce stunning backgrounds.

Print your Photographs

Printing your photographs can be a personally fun and rewarding process. With personal inkjet photo printers today, one can produce prints that would once be considered impossible just a few years ago. Given the rate at which digital cameras sales is growing, the attraction of these fine printers is even more attractive. Yet, when selling prints is your business, there are other matters that you'll need to consider, such as time, cost and print quality.
Here are Dan Heller's tutorials. Enjoy.

Fine-tune your inkjet photo printer

Most of today's digital cameras are capable of shooting stunningly sharp photos. Sometimes, though, what you see onscreen is not what you get on paper. If WYSIWYG-caliber output is eluding you, it doesn't necessarily mean you need a new printer. You may just need to make a few changes to the printing process itself. A switch to a different type of paper and a bit of testing and tweaking could be all your photos need for that fresh-from-the-photo-lab look. These six steps will show you how to get the best possible results from your inkjet.

Watch the videoto see what you'll need to get better digital photo prints.

Shooting Fireworks

Tips From Smithsonian Photographers give great dvice to help make your next pyrotechnic photography the best yet.

Predictable as the changing seasons, some of the world's most spectacular fireworks return regularly to the National Mall in Washington. They accompany the Fourth of July, Presidential Inaugurals, and sometimes special events such as the Desert Storm Victory Celebration.

As much fun as they are to watch, fireworks are equally as challenging to photograph. Working on the Mall gives the Smithsonian's staff photographers on-going opportunities to capture these events on film, and to test and improve their individual photographic techniques. Although their individual techniques may vary, the Smithsonian photographers all have some basic recommendations.

Unusual Photography

Unusual photography show stirs interest.
Your digital camera is more than new incarnation of your old film camera. Yes, it still produces photos, but it also offers new outlets for creativity, including instant gratification of seeing your photos now, the ability to experiment without worrying about expense, the technology to fine-tune your photos with advanced professional techniques, and the means to share your work instantaneously with anyone, anyplace in the world. It's no wonder that digital cameras are outselling traditional cameras for the first time ever.

However, photography, as much as it has changed in the past decade thanks to the advance of digital cameras and methods, remains the same fundamentally as it has for close to 100 years. The perfect shot consists of a number of factors including subject, background, angle, lighting, lense and exposure. Granted, digital cameras let us perfect the formula almost immediately.

Express yourself

Please do not limitate yourself. Free your creativity and imagination. You need to be wilful until you get your vision on the photo. Try to put your personal sign to every photo no matter how many times that motive was photographed before. Try to show nature as dramatic, contrast, colorful and majestic because nature is all that. When you photograph in cities try to represent a life of their citizens. Unfortunately that life is often grey, gloomy and sad. In peoples photography is very important to bite into their personality and bring at least a little of that emotions on your photos. To achieve this you need to establish a direct eye contact with your models. The eyes are mirror of the soul.
The important thing is to photograph motives that you like and that you are satisfied with your photos. If other people like your works too it is a nice thing, but this should not be your prime goal.
