St. Mary's Column Marienplatz Munich

The Marienplatz (Mary's Square, i.e. St. Mary, Our Lady's Square) in Munich, Germany is "the heart of the city" since the city was founded in 1158 by Henry the Lion.
In the Middle Ages, the square used to be a market place as well as the place where tournaments and festivities took place. The square was originally known as Schrannen but it was renamed Marienplatz (St. Mary's Square) as a way to ask Virgin Mary (the patron saint of Bavaria) to protect the town from a cholera epidemic.

In 1638 elector Maximilian I erected the Mariensäule, an eleven-meter-high Marian column in the centre of Marienplatz, to show his gratitude that München and the Bavarian town of Landshut were almost spared of the destruction by the Swedes during the Thirty Years’ War. The column (Mariensäule) is topped by a golden statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon as the Queen of Heaven. The figure, created in 1590, was originally located in Munich's Frauenkirche. At each corner of the column's pedestal is a statue of a putto. The four putti are each depicted fighting a different beast, symbolizing the city's overcoming of adversities: war represented by the lion, pestilence by the cockatrice, hunger or famine by the dragon and heresy by the serpent.

Mariensäule in Muenchen was the first column of this type built north of the Alps and inspired erecting other Marian columns in this part of Europe. Today all official distances in Munchen are measured from Mariensaule, and Mariensaeule is still used as the topological center of Bavaria for topographical surveys.

Isar River - Munich - Bavaria

The Isar River, which flows through Munich, Bavaria, southern Germany, and splits the city in half, provides visitors and locals with a variety of recreational opportunities.

For Münchner, the Isar River is more than just a pretty sight. The river, whose waters flow from the Alpine region of Tyrol (Tirol) in Austria, has long served as a major city attraction.

A number of popular pursuits take place on its waters or along its banks. Fishing in the River Isar is quite popular. Another fun activities include river rafting, but not the type that most people picture when they think about such an activity. This is not whitewater rafting, but rather merely floating down the gentle river on a wooden raft. These old-fashioned leisurely float trips take several hours and usually include a band, plenty of German food, and a bit of rambunctious behavior. (For example, you might want to bring a water gun so you can squirt passers-by on the bridges above the river!)

Sunbathing is also a common warm weather occurrence on the banks of the Isar River. But beware... nude sunbathing is allowed in certain areas and if you're not accustomed to this tradition, you may be in for an embarrassing moment or two.

Along some stretches of the river, you'll also find ideal spots for picnicking, and in designated areas, you can bring a barbecue grill and set it up near the water.

On a stretch of the river known as the Eisbach - a tributary of the Isar which runs directly through the Englischer Garten - avid surfers can practice their skills without ever leaving the city! A "permanent" wave, produced as the river's waters shoot from an underground tunnel, allows for some pretty radical river surfing on the Eisbach. The water comes out of the tunnel at about 5 meters per second and only one person can surf at a time. Nevertheless, polite German surfers wait their turn to enjoy this awesome city activity. If you decide to give it a try, remember that the rocks and walls nearby add to the potential danger of surfing here and that the water is almost always cold.

Munich - Mueller'sches Volksbad - Au-Haidhausen

The turn-of-the-century bath house known as Müllersches Volksbad - translated as Mueller's Public Baths - was made possible by a generous donation by the man for whom the pool is named.

Built from 1897-1901, this amazing building is really a mix of a number of different styles. South German Baroque architecture tends to dominate though the keen eye will also recognize Roman thematic elements as well as Art Nouveau components on the exterior of the building. Inside, the Art Nouveau décor is magnificent and has stood the test of time. It's easy to see why this spectacular pool was lauded as the grandest and most modern of all baths in Germany, and is today Munich’s most splendid and one of Europe’s most beautiful indoor swimming pools. Swimmers will be hard pressed to find another setting like this.

Taking a dip in the Müller'sches Volksbad allows you to experience bathing culture in the original sense. This spa in the more than 100 years old Art-Nouveau building equipped with state-of-the-art technology is an aesthetic experience. Relax, enjoy and pamper yourself with a massage.

St Barbara Church - Baernbach Austria

Bärnbach, a village in Styria, Austria, is known for a single attraction: A parish church that used to be quite unattractive until the best-known Austrian contemporary artist and architect, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, extensively refurbished it.

Hundertwasser, a controversial painter, architect and environmentalist, is often considered an artist of the 'Wiener Schule des Phantastischen Realismus', although his art has his own distinct style. He was one who could perceive the world in crazy colors and turn any tiresome building into a unique piece of art, accepting only "natural", "ecological", "biomorph" styles. Hundertwasser was committed to the pursuit of achieving peace between nature and humanity. He created many pieces aimed to promote awareness of global environmental issues such as water conservation. He designed the e.g. humus toilet, and was obsessed with improving the relationship between people and their environments.

The original church of Saint Barbara in Barnbach was built 1948 - 1953, but it was Friedensreich Hundertwasser who turned it into a unique and joyful masterpiece in 1987 - 1988. Rich in ceramics, embossed ribs of the bell tower, golden "bulbs", golden balls, colored roof, the grass which grow on the ledges, undulating floors unevenly lined with ceramic tiles, all indicate the philosophical concept of the master: "There are no straight lines in nature, there is no absolutely smooth land, a pathway through woods". One of his key-believes was that straight lines lack God. Therefore, you will find corners, edges and walls bending into all sorts of directions at the Bärnbach parish church. He also designed the twelve towers and gates around the church. They represent eleven important religions plus faithless people, and carry the respective symbols of the confessions and of tolerance.

For more of Hundertwasser go to nearby Blumau, or see the Hundertwasser Haus and the KunstHausWien in Vienna, or the world’s most beautiful public toilets in the little town of Kawakawa, New Zealand. The designs have all the ingredients of Hundertwasser's hippie-trippie architecture: Stained glass, colourful tiles, spirals and more spirals.

However, such colorful approach to design was unacceptable for many people. The artist was not popular with everyone. Throughout his life his work, teaching and viewpoints were controversial and some people still have strong opinions about it today.

To Catch a Thief - Nice France

To Catch a Thief is a lavishly costumed mystery about a cat burglar prowling the pretty playgrounds of the ultra-rich on the French Riviera. With two of Hitchcock's favorite stars, glorious Grace Kelly and gorgeous Cary Grant, the film quite literally sparkles.

A large part of the film's charm is its showcasing of the beautiful towns and villages along France's (and Monaco's) Riviera coast. One of the scenes was filmed on the Promenade des Anglais, another one on Avenue Foch in Nice

It is interesting to note that the flower market scenes were not filmed on the cours saleya, the bustling pedestrian zone in old Nice where the market is still held today. Instead, in an attempt to avoid the massive crowds, Hitchcock (very effectively) created his own flower market for the film on a street that runs along the periphery of the old town, the Boulevard Jean Jaures.

I once heard a story about Cary Grant shopping in Nice during the filming of To Catch A Thief. He and a companion were looking for just the right shirt for Grant to wear during a particular scene. As he was trying on various styles Grant told his friend that he very much enjoyed being in France. "Really?" said the friend. "Why?" - "Because the French are so respectful of my privacy and don't give a damn about celebrity." Grant responded. "In France, unlike in the United States, I could live my life in blissful obscurity."

Once the proper shirt had been selected and paid for, the pair made their way to the door only to discover that they couldn't leave because an enormous crowd had gathered just outside the shop. It seems word had spread that Cary Grant was inside.

Antibes - Superyachts and Billionaires

The southern craggy peninsula of Antibes, the Cap d’Antibes, on the French Riviera is an enchanting headland dotted with sumptuous villas. A bastion of wealth, this Cap houses royalty, Russian "oligarchs" and Hollywood stars. Hotel des Etrangers one of the most exclusive hotels in the world can be found on this Cap. Twenty-first century guests and film stars attending the nearby Cannes Film Festival continue to contribute to the almost mythical allure of the Hotel du Cap, which is lush even in comparison to the other high-end resorts and hotels for the rich and famous in the Cote d'Azur.

The historic chateau in Antibes where Picasso painted some of his many famous works and the allure of the film festival in Cannes make residency in this area the envy of many.

The city of Antibes, built between the bays of La Salis and St-Roch, lies to the west of the Baie des Anges facing Nice. It offers many old winding streets and town squares, excellent museums, sandy beaches, a wide variety of restaurants - in short plenty to do for everyone.

Although the city is home to one of the largest yacht ports in the world, and the largest pleasure harbour in Europe sometimes even billionaires struggle to find space to park their most luxurious yachts there, but more extra-large berths will be build in the harbour of Antibes Antibes in the near future. For now, however, the billionaire yacht owners of the world will have to fight for parking spaces for their up to 80 meter long luxury yachts with bullet-proof windows, their own missile defence system, and a mini submarine with internal boarding, on the glistening sea of the majestic old town of Antibes.

Who says the world economy is in trouble .......?

Le Fort Carre - Antibes - France

Antibes, a picturesque little port in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur région on the French Riviera, is only 7 miles northeast of Cannes, its glamorous neighbor on the Mediterranean coast. It has a stormy history, being situated in a much fought-over region.

Originally Antipolis, a Greek trading post established in the 5th century BC by Phocaeans from Marseille, it became a Roman town in 43 BC. In the 10th century, Antibes found a protector in Seigneur Rodoart, who built extensive fortified walls around the town and a castle in which to live. For the next 200 years, the town experienced a period of renewal. From 1384 to 1608 it was a fief of the coast-ruling Grimaldi family - currently Monaco's royal family. By the end of the 15th century, the entire region had fallen under the protection and control of Louis XI, king of France, and the small port of Antibes fell into obscurity.

The area around Antibes finally emerged from its long slumber around the middle of the 19th century, as wealthy people from around Europe discovered the beauty of the place and built luxurious homes here.

The first fortifications were probably constructed by the romans, but the town was given new defences in medieval times. In 1553, a tower called la tour Saint-Florent was built on a penninsular to the north of the town. There had previously been a chapel on the site, and this was incorperated into the tower. Henry III gave the tower four bastions in 1565, and it became Fort Carré (the squared fort). In the 1680's Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, who is considered one the of the greatest military engineers of all time, strengthened Fort Carré by adding traverses and outer walls to the fortification.

Fort Carré is in very good condition, though the outer walls are overgrown in places. The seaward defences are intact. The large bastion on the breakwater protecting the harbour has also survived.

Cannes - Life which everybody dreams of living

Whether you are a film buff or experienced sailor, fine arts connoisseur or modern architecture aficionado, Cannes is fun! It's a playground for the rich and famous, a town where the best hotel suites can cost a small fortune - particularly during its famous annual film festival, when thousands upon thousands of visitors jostle to catch a glimpse of Hollywood A-listers and young starlets on the red carpet.

Many celebrities have homes in Cannes in the south-eastern tip of France in the French department of Alpes-Maritimes and the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur. Sheltered from the north wind by its background of mountains, overlooking the bay of Cannes, their villas, surrounded by Mimosa pines, eucalyptus, orange, and olives trees growing on the softly sloping hills of this quiet residential neighborhood, offer fabulous panoramic views of the islands of Lerins and the surrounding hills and mountains and yet are only a five minutes drive away from the sea, and a stepping stone to the Alps, Provence, Monaco and Italy.

Valbonne - History and charm

Located in the center of the large Jurassic plateau, the town of Valbonne meets several geographical areas. The climate is Mediterranean, the sea being only 6 km away. However, this influence is mitigated by the maritime forest. The area is protected by hills from the cold winds that descend from the Alps. Rainfall is rare, but violent and abundant. The landscape consists of hills and small valleys, supports a vegetation dominated by Aleppo pine, holm oak and cork oak, accompanied by an undergrowth of woody plants, alongside olive groves and vineyards.

In 1519 Augustin de Grimaldi, Bishop of Grasse and abbot of Lerins, ordered that a village has to be built next to the abandoned Abbey of Sainte Marie de Valbonne to repopulate a country devastated by the plague since 1351. It is this village that has remained virtually unchanged until today. It is not a typical Provencal village built on a rocky spur and with narrow, steep and twisting streets. Rather, the old village of Valbonne was built on a flat area and according to a rectangular plan. All streets lead down to the Renaissance area "Place des Arcades" Arcades, which invites to a delightful lunch on one of the restaurant terraces under the azure sky of the French Riviera.

But Valbonne is not only a museum, it is a living pretty little town with international public and a balanced extent of main and second residences, a chic and residential address for the engineers and university people working in the nearby Sophia-Antipolis science park, as well as for researchers from all over the world, who purchase villas, country houses, bastides and old Provencal stone mas in Valbonne and the the surrounding areas.

Valbonne - French village of contradictions

The commune of Valbonne in southern France consists of two sites: the old village, situated in the extreme north-west, and the high-tech park Sophia Antipolis in the east. The area outside the village includes luxury villas, housing estates, and homes of the old-time generations of Valbonnais. At the bottom of the village, across the street below the rectangle of the center, is the 12th-century Eglise Saint Blaise, the attached Chalaisien Abbey (or 'Ancien Couvent Chalaisien'), the Moulin des Moines (now a restaurant), and a very ancient-looking carved-stone monument.

While the village has been preserved in its original condition, the nearby high tech center of Sophia Antipolis is France's answer to California's Silicon Valley. The name Sophia Antipolis was adopted from the ancient Greek colony of Antipolis which resided in the nearby village of Antibes. Constructed in the 1970s along the same lines as La Défense near Paris, Sophia Antipolis is a highly recognized international community, with more than 1,000 companies hiring more than 25,000 employees. It now has an area of 2,500 ha spreading over the municipality of Valbonne and its surrounding municipalities, Antibes, Biot, Mougins, and Vallauris, and the community continues to grow day by day.

However, although the population of the town of Valbonne has greatly increased, and the proximity of the coast and especially the construction in the 1970s of the technology park Sophia Antipolis has transformed the region, the village of Valbonne itself has remained intact, retaining much of its 16th century charm.

Millennium Monument and Fountain Chicago

With its 40-foot columns and polished stone, Wrigley Square and Millennium Monument, on the southeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street, is where the past and present meet in the heart of Chicago's beautiful downtown. Made up of doric columns, The Colonnade is the link to the city's past. At the center of the monument is the Millennium Fountain.

This nearly full-sized replica of the semicircle of paired Greek Doric-style columns (called a Peristyle) that originally sat in this area of Grant Park from 1917 to 1953, is the most modest and traditional piece of architecture in Chicago's Millennium Park. With its graceful semi-circular row of columns that rise nearly 40 feet, the Millennium Monument ties the past to the present and supports the designation of Michigan Avenue as a landmark district.

Etched in stone on the base of the Millennium Monument are the names of the founders of Millennium Park. These individuals, corporations and foundations provided generous monetary contribution - the William Wrigley Junior Company Foundation donated $5,000,000.00 - for the creation and conservation of Millennium Park.

Chicago Loop 'L'

The Loop (historically Union Loop, or commonly Loop) is the two mile circuit of elevated railroad that forms the hub of the 'L' rapid transit system in Chicago, Illinois. The surrounding area is also known as The Loop community area.

Though the distinction of operating the first elevated railway does not belong to Chicago (New York city's, opening in 1867, has that honor), Chicago did try many times to create such a service. With the first attempt in 1869, over 70 companies were created for the purpose of starting an elevated rail system between 1872 and 1900. The accolade of opening Chicago's first rapid transit line went to the Chicago and South Side Rapid Transit Railroad Company. It opened on 12 October 1897, providing direct service into the center of Chicago. By 1909, the city of Chicago enjoyed one of the best rapid transit systems in the world, providing reliable unified service to outlying communities and neighborhoods then in existence.

At the turn of the century the old elevated structures, some more than a century old, were being rebuilt, ensuring their survival well into the twenty-first century.

Looking down at beautiful Chicago

How can you be in "Skyscraper central" and not go up to the Grandaddy of them all? If you don't mind heights then this is the place for you! From the 103 floor of Chicago's Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower), accessible via a super fast elevator, you get a 360 degrees panoramic view of the entire surrounding area 1,353 feet below you.

Chicago is laid out before you - the panorama is a breathtaking sight, and you see and can feel the rich layers of history that define this city. When the visibility is good you can see for miles and miles and miles - four states at once. The views are spectacular, and if you time it right you can see get them in daylight then watch the sun go down and see the lights come on, strings of lights stretching out into the distance - skyscrapers full of light.

There's nothing quite like seeing an urban landscape from a bird's eye view that can make things feel a little less heavy.

Chicago - Birds-Eye-View

If you're planning a trip to the Windy City, experts and travelers alike highly recommend seeing Chicago from above.

The Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) observation deck, as well as nearby Hancock Tower and Observatory, offer fantastic views of the beauty of this gorgeous, complicated city. But looking down is more than just taking in the sights, sounds and flavors of one of America's most architecturally stunning skylines and Lake Michigan. It also gives an impression of Chicago's diversity and complexity. This city's buildings are a physical representation of the strength and energy metaphorically coursing through the metropolis' veins.

If, as Sinatra croons, Chicago is your kinda town, this dizzying experience is not to be missed.
