Sundial Bridge - Sit and watch how time passes by

A bridge ... Stretched precisely from south to north. Here is the requirement: The bridge must not cast too much shadow over the river. This place, Turtle Bay, happens to be one of the best salmon spawning places in California. It is surrounded by a park. Calatrava's favorite cable stayed design should work fine. The bridge is light - a pedestrian one. One tower is enough. One - leaning over to one side, so that the tower's weight compensates the girders weight. Let us make it out of glass so that sun penetrates through it. Lots of shadows - California sky is blue and the sun is shiny. We can play more with shadows. Make curves, reflecting surfaces. Contrast of blue and white. Fishermen like this place. They are around. One can sit at the bridge and watch how the shadows move slowly with the sun. Let us make a special space for it. Shadows with time ... Time ... Time passes by ... When you are retired, only so much is left. Fishing, thinking about life, what good was done, watching how time passes by ... A sundial!

Clark Street Bridge Chicago - A contrast in time

Downtown Chicago, Illinois provides a unique opportunity for anyone interested in bridges. In a mere two miles are eighteen movable bridges. While the most celebrated bridge is the Du Sable Bridge at N. Michigan Avenue, there are seventeen other examples of beautiful Chicago bridges.
The North Clark Street Bridge was built in 1929. It is classified as Single Deck; Pony Trusses Bridge, and quite similar to the nearby La Salle Street Bridge.
Although, unlike the Franklin Street and La Salle Street bridges, N. Clark Street Bridge has lost its original ornate railings, they are perhaps the three most aesthetically pleasing examples of the pony truss bascule bridge in Chicago, and the bridgetender buildings for these bridges are among the more ornate and well-preserved examples in Chicago.
There have been some interesting events at this bridge. The most funniest is probably the one that happened in 1937: A visitor to Chicago climbed onto the truss twenty feet above the roadway. He fell asleep there and could not be roused from below. A fireman had to carry him down. When questioned, he claimed an 'acquaintance overdosed him with liquor' and that he was grateful for the nap.

ORLOJ - Prague Astronomical Clock

If you're looking for a highly ornamental, astronomical clock with its original workings intact: Go to Prague.
With glittering hands and a complex series of filigreed wheels, this ornamental timepiece doesn't merely mark the hours. Symbols of the zodiac tell the course of the heavens.
When the bell tolls, the windows above the astronomical clock fly open and mechanical apostles, skeletons, and "sinners" begin a ritualistic dance of destiny.
The calendar is placed at the bottom part of the Orloj. It counts the days and the months. The twelve inner medaillons depict the signs of the zodiac, each stands for a month, while the outer medaillon depict scenes from folk life characteristic of the months. The dial makes a full circle once a year.
Everything in Prague has a story, and so it is with the Old Town clock. Natives claim that when the mechanical figures were created, town officials had the clockmaker blinded so that he would never duplicate his masterpiece. In vengeance, the blind man climbed the tower and threw himself into the works, achieving the dual purpose of killing himself and stopping the clock. The clock remained silent for more than fifty years.
The Orloj was built six centuries ago in 1410. It has been in operation from the beginning to the present time in it's ioriginal form, even the astronomical dial (shaped like an astrolabe on the clock face) with its mechanism. Twice during it's history the City of Prague nearly sold it for scrap metal, the Nazis deliberatly tried to blow it up with artillery, and time has ravaged it unkindly. But after more than 600 years the Orloj keeps on running, with a lot of love, care and respect from the residents of this magical city.
