Chicago Loop 'L'

The Chicago Elevated Railway is known as "The L" which is short for "elevated." However, it has to be noted that steam-powered cable cars circulated downtown Chicago and gave the Loop its name before the elevated tracks that circle the area and "L" trains came on the scene. The Elevated Railway system is a rapid transit system similar to the subway in New York or the Underground in London.
The first EL train ran in 1892 from Van Buren to 39th, and the car was actually a steam locomotive pulling four wooden coaches. Now it serves commuters at 144 stations, making it the second largest rapid transit network in the U.S after New York's subway. When it was originally constructed, the L rail system was completely elevated, hence the name. Today, however, the system is a mixture of elevated, overground and underground tracks.
As it has been for the last hundred years, Chicago rapid transit remains a system in flux, continuing to adapt to changing trends, needs, and technologies.

Chicago Theatre - French Baroque out of a movie

Seeing a concert at the Chicago Theatre is like spending the night with history. It is not hard to imagine what this place must have been like when it first opened.

Opening in 1921 as the first "movie palace" it set the stage for others across the country. From the lavish lobby with it's marble columns, grand staircase, and stained glass window (look for the original owner's coat of arms in the glass with the signature 35mm film coming out of the mouth's of lions) to the Steuben glass chandeliers, this place is magnificent! Stand in the theater and look at the individual boxes, the tier balconies, the ceiling murals and its opulence and beauty. It's like something you would see in the main dining room of the Titanic where the rich people on the ship eat. It is easy to imagine a young, beautiful lady in a big fluffy dress decending gracefully from the sweeping stairways to "come out" to society. This theater exudes class!

Like other theatres of this grandeur the Chicago Theater fell on hard times in the 1970's and for about 15 years lacked the stewardship owed to a building of this kind. In 1986 the theater was totally restored to what you see today, and it continues to be an icon of Chicago.

Presidential Towers Chicago

Chicago's Presidential Towers complex, a compact and carefully planned urban enclave, is a series of four nearly identical towers, each a step back from the leader, and spanning two city blocks.

It was one of the pioneering residential projects in Chicago's River West neighborhood. An area that was once seen as nothing more than a ramshackle collection of old brick warehouses in an area known as the Midwest's version of "Skid Row" was seen as an opportunity by its developers. From 1985 until the building boom at the beginning of the 21st century, these towers marked the western cutoff of tall buildings in Chicago's downtown skyline.

Individually, the buildings wouldn't seem like much - some generic brown 40-something story towers. But there's strength in numbers. Just as one ceramic kitten is a knick-knack, but a dozen are a "collection." They are elegant in their own way. One after the other, they are rhythmic. And when the sun is setting they even seem to glow sometimes.

Chicago - Home of Fine Art

Chicago is famous for its iconic architecture, but it's quickly gaining a worldwide reputation for its iconic public art as well.

The work of famous artists including Pablo Picasso, Jean Miro and Marc Chagall is showcased along Chicago's streets, inside building lobbies and atop Chicago buildings. In all, there are more than 700 sculptures, mosaics and paintings, most created and installed since 1967, the year when the first sculpture an "Unnamed" gigantic creation by Picasso was installed in Daley Plaza.

Chicago's commitment to public art is funded through an innovative Percent for Arts program that allocates 1.33 percent of the construction budget for new public buildings to commission and acquire artwork. At least half of the commissions are awarded to Chicago area artists to provide opportunities to the local arts community.

When the 'Percent for Art Ordinance' was unanimously approved in 1978, Chicago was one of the first municipalities, and the largest, to legislate the incorporation of public art into its official building program. Today, there are more than 200 similar programs throughout the United States, due in large part to the success of the Chicago ordinance.
