Taxes & Artists: Taking a Time & Services Deduction

Awhile back, Photo Business News & Forum wrote about how you CAN'T donate your time and services and claim fair market value for such as a deduction (An Original Picasso for $50? That's what they say..., 2/10/07), and one potential solution that could get you a bit more credit for your donations, when you do (The Non-Profit Challenge, 11/19/07), but once again, there is a bill winding it's way through Congress that would allow:
"...artists to take a fair-market value deduction for works given to and retained by nonprofit institutions. The U.S. tax system accords unequal treatment to creators and collectors who donate tangible works (e.g., paintings or manuscripts) to museums, libraries, educational or other collecting institutions. A collector may take a tax deduction for the fair-market value of the work, but creators may deduct only their "basis" value—essentially the cost of materials such as paint and canvas."
If you can enter your name and address, and click the "send" button, in less than two minutes you can actually send an e-mail to your elected official that represents you, through this very cool system. Americans for the Arts has their Advocate for the Arts website and all you do is enter your address, and they will automatically route your sentiments to your Senator or Member! If you'd like to her Senator/Photographer Pat Leahy (and the bill's sponsor) in an NPR interview on the subject, click here.

techsoup and flickr offer free online photo accounts to nonprofits

One of the most popular online photo sharing services, Flickr, is partnering with TechSoup, a nonprofit that helps other nonprofits use technology, to offer 10,000 free premium Flickr accounts to nonprofit organizations. Flickr is also starting a new program, Flickr for Good, whereby it will highlight photos of "good works" depicted on Flickr.
Techsoup's suggestions for how nonprofits can use Flickr:
"Uses for Outreach and Community Building: Flickr is a new way for organizations to tell their story. With a Flickr account, individuals can showcase and chronicle their organization's work through their own photography. For example, by creating a group photo pool and encouraging discussions, Flickr members can build awareness of an organization's work. Members can also provide a link to their organization's Web site in their Flickr profiles. Conversely, the organization's Web site can stream Flickr photos...
Uses Within Organizations: Flickr members can store all their photographs of their organization's work in one place if they have the legal right to do so. Account holders can upload photos to Flickr from anywhere in the world. The photos can be organized into sets and collections, and they can be tagged for easy searching. Another tool that organizations can use internally is a Flickr group. In a private group, only group members and those who have been invited can view the group page. Groups can also be completely public or public by invitation only."
Find out how to apply for a free Flickr account here at TechSoup.
nonprofits, nota bene: While you're checking out the free Flickr accounts at TechSoup, take a look at the many other services and products TechSoup offers, including drastically discounted software and other technology products.

Free Press staffer wins photo award

Detroit Free Press photographer Rashaun Rucker was named Photographer of the Year by the Michigan Press Photographers Association on Saturday in its 55th annual Pictures of the Year contest.
Rucker, 29, is the first African American to win the award, which celebrates a year's worth of exemplary visual storytelling, including a months-long project documenting the care, abuse and impact of pit bulls in metro Detroit, the release of Nathaniel Abraham from prison, and a photo-video package on feather bowling.
"I almost cried," said Rucker, who came to the Free Press in 2003. "Even though I won, this is recognition for all the people at the Free Press who helped me throughout the year."
The Pictures of the Year contest drew 1,554 entrants from 20 newspapers around the state in photography, editing and multimedia categories. The judges chose Rucker from a field of 105 photographers.
"He worked so hard, and we are thrilled that he was recognized by his peers for his commitment to the people of Detroit and to journalism," said Kathy Kieliszewski, Free Press deputy director of photography.
The Free Press won several awards in other categories, as well, including a sweep of the video category. Other Free Press photographers given awards include Regina H. Boone, Susan Tusa and Amy Leang.
The Detroit News won 15 awards, including three first-place awards.
