How to Buy Your Next Digital Camera

Digital cameras have evolved much in the past few years to include more capabilities, sharper, larger viewing screens and slimmer builds. So while some people may still be shopping for their first digicam, many others are looking to buy a second, improved version of their current camera.
It’s a good time to be in the market for such a camera. According to research from Olympus, unit sales for these gizmos has grown about 30% in the past two years, while dollar sales grew at about half that rate, indicating declining prices and improved technology. In fact, digital-camera prices have dropped an average of $30 over the past 12 months.
This guide offers an overview of the basics that you’ll need to know when buying a digital camera. It also explains many of the fancy features that are popping up on these devices, such as facial recognition — a camera’s ability to detect when faces are being captured in photos, thus appropriately adjusting exposure, focus and flash. This guide isn’t geared toward hobbyists, but rather toward average users who want good quality photos but don’t want to struggle with confusing product specs and promotions.

Point and Shoot, or Flaunt and Pocket
As you begin looking for a camera, selecting a preferred size and shape will help narrow your choices. Like iPods and cellphones, stylish pocket cameras are fashionable accessories; some come in shades like Precious Rose or Noble Blue. These pocket models, designed with emphasis on small size, are as easy to carry as they are to use for taking good photos: most offer seven or eight megapixels each, a 3x or better optical zoom lens and a stunning viewing screen. Good examples include Sony Corp.’s $400 Cyber-shot DSC-T100 or Nikon Inc.’s $300 Coolpix S50.
If you don’t mind sacrificing style for a camera that’s sturdier in your hand but bulkier in your purse, point-and-shoot models will be more your speed. On average, these cost less than their showy cousins. They’re more likely to have protruding zoom lenses that don’t collapse entirely into the camera body and often feature larger buttons. More point-and-shoots offer optical viewfinders, which have become practically extinct on pocket digicams where real estate is scarce. Examples of point-and-shoots with optical viewfinders include Eastman Kodak Co.’s EasyShare C653 and Canon Inc.’s PowerShot A460-both cost $130.
A third category of digital cameras, the single-lens reflex or SLR, continues to be marketed to regular consumers rather than to the photography enthusiasts for whom they were originally intended. SLR prices have dropped a couple of hundred dollars in the past year, but many models still start around $800 and come with detachable lenses and flashes. Average users can steer clear of SLR cameras.

Megapixels
Most cameras today offer anywhere between six and 10 megapixels; cameras with four megapixels or fewer are rather rare. But while higher megapixel counts are easy to find for less money, such as Hewlett-Packard Co.’s $300 PhotoSmart R967 with 10 megapixels, such intense resolution is really only necessary if you plan to heavily edit or blow up your photographs for jumbo prints, which most people won’t be doing.

Have a go at Concert Photography

Of all the types of photography ever invented, I would claim that live concert photography is up there among the most difficult ones. You have five thousand fans behind you. A band in front of you. Nobody stands still. In fact, even the notion of standing still ruins the idea of a good music photo. The bouncers hate you, because you are in their way. The crowd is jealous of you. Crowd surfers will kick you in the head. The band thinks you're annoying. The lighting is never bright enough, and changes so frequently that you're screwed even in the few moments that it is.

Nonetheless, concert photography is one of my all-time favourite pastimes. It's hard. It's unrewarding. But it's deeply gratifying on a personal level. It's about capturing the mood. Capturing the looks. Capturing something the audience is feeling.

So, how can you take photos at a concert successfully?

Photography is Dead

Brian C. Ledbetter wrote this cool article on May 9, 2007

... long live citizen journalism!
I ran across this article from the Guardian last week on Lightstalkers, and didn't really get a chance to sit down and read it through until this morning.
Is photography really dead? Andrew Brown, an accomplished English journalist in his own right, says it is. He points to the ease-of-use of modern photographic equipment, and lamenting the fact that it is "so easy" for the Everyman to take a photograph now, claims that the overall quality of pictorial stock is in decline.
In some ways, Andrew seems to be on the right track. It is infinitely easier to take a photograph today than it was, say, 50 years ago. The equipment necessary to take high-quality photographs even through the 1970s was cumbersome, difficult to use, and required a great attention to detail in order to get a professional picture. Of course, the Polaroid camera existed back then for the amateurs, so it's not like "easy to use" is really all that new.
What really makes the difference now is that one can take extremely high-quality photographs using digital cameras these days, and easily meet or exceed the quality of many editorial photographs sent across the news wires. Andrew is certainly correct in saying that a professional can take a beautiful photograph with every click of the shutter, whereas amateurs can only get one once in every dozen pictures or so. Heck, I know that's true -- that's about how often I can get a relatively professional-looking photograph with my consumer equipment (and, more importantly, my consumer eye). Chris Anderson, who is a professional, can accomplish the same 100% of the time. I'm fine with that, that part of the photographic world is still, and will remain, completely intact.

Plese visit Brian C. Ledbetter's blog to read the full article and participate in the discussion.

Taking Great Digital Photos Every Time

If you want to really learn digital photography... if you have a digital camera but don't understand half of its features... if you are considering moving up from an old "film-style" camera to a digital camera but aren't quite sure what kind of camera to get... this may interest you.
You see, digital photography is not complicated once you know a few basics. In fact, it's way easier than "regular old photography". I stumbled across this website which produces a guide called Digital Photography Mastery.

Here's some of what's inside...
All about going digital - the hows and whys of digital photography, and why it makes your photographs better. (page 6-10)
Photography 101 - yes, this is the world's quickest & simplest "get up to speed" guide on taking great pictures. (page 12-14)
Choosing a camera - If you don't have a camera yet, or you're thinking of getting a different one, this checklist will make your choice simple. (pages 14-17)
Accessories you need - hey, don't let camera salesperson load you up with a bunch of junk you don't need. Here's what you do need - plain & simple. (page 18)

Children Capture "Pictures of Hope" Behind a Photo Lens

General Motors and The Salvation Army will bring "Pictures of Hope," to life as Linda Solomon, award-winning photojournalist and former television correspondent, leads a photography workshop for kids at The Salvation Army Ellen Thompson Center in Detroit, Mich.
During the workshop, sponsored by General Motors, the children will learn photography techniques. After the workshop, the children will be given disposable cameras and then asked to go out on assignment and capture photos of their hopes and dreams for a better life.
"We can learn a great deal from the images captured by the children, since those reveal their hopes and dreams," said Linda Solomon, celebrity photojournalist. "Despite the fact that they are living in difficult circumstances, they appreciate the things that are truly important in life: their families, a good education and peace. All of those hopes are beautifully expressed in their images."
Thanks to General Motors’ generous sponsorship of this program, "Pictures of Hope," the children’s images will be transformed into greeting cards which will be sold through the Salvation Army of Detroit in the Fall, and 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of the "Pictures of Hope" greeting cards will benefit many homeless women and children at the local center. The chosen photos and cards will be revealed at a press conference this fall.
"Giving back to the communities where we live and work is incredible important to General Motors, its employees and its dealer body," said Ed Welburn, vice president, GM Global Design. ’Pictures of Hope’ is a wonderful project, and we are proud to be a part of it. Now more than ever, children need hope and a sense of pride that can translate into higher self-esteem and success later in life." Welburn along with Solomon will select the best photo from each child’s portfolio for the greeting cards.
This is the second year that General Motors is sponsoring this program. Last year, Solomon led workshops in Salvation Army centers in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Orlando, Florida. In 2006, over 30 children participated in this program. This year, the program is expanding to 10 cities. Besides Detroit, MI, Linda will lead workshops in Columbus and Cleveland, OH; Tucson, AZ; San Diego, CA; Dallas, San Antonio and Houston, TX; Miami, FL; and Washington, DC.
"The Salvation Army is so appreciative of General Motors and Linda Solomon for providing the children we serve with an opportunity to expand their horizons and explore their dreams," said Major Norman Marshall, divisional commander for The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division. "While we can provide them with basic necessities like food and shelter, you’ve given them the chance to raise their spirits and really think about their future. Thank you to GM and Linda Solomon for ’Doing the Most Good.’"
The Salvation Army Booth Services Ellen Thompson Center is specifically for women who face unique challenges when confronting substance abuse issues. Drug addiction is aa much a family crisis as a personal problem, so addicted mothers are encouraged to bring their school age children with them as they enroll in the Evangeline program. While mothers receive personal counseling, children participate in educational programs appropriate to their age level. Once counseling has been completed, graduates of the program may move into transitional housing which provides a bridge of independence as participants continue their path to recovery.

HP takes up Kodak challenge

Eastman Kodak Co. is getting some company in the marketplace for low-cost printer inks.

Hewlett-Packard Co. this week unveiled a new strategy for selling and labeling ink cartridges for its consumer inkjet printers that will make it easier to pick the correct model. It also plans to price ink as low as $14.99.
The strategy is designed to make it easier and cheaper for consumers to print, HP officials said. While HP denied any connection, the move comes about 2½ months after Kodak launched its ambitious line of all-in-one home printers that promise consumers savings of 50 percent or more on their printing costs.
Kodak's cartridges sell for $9.99 for a black ink tank and $14.99 for a five-color cartridge.Analysts say the cutthroat market for inkjet printing supplies may be entering an even more combative period as competitors battle each other and lower-priced cartridges from resellers and aftermarket suppliers. There's $50 billion a year at stake worldwide in the market for printers and supplies.
And those competitive dynamics will impact Kodak, which hopes the printer line will become a strong source of revenue as Rochester's second-largest employer continues on its journey of transformation from a film to a digital company.
