Standin' On A Corner In Winslow Arizona

Is a passing mention in a 30+ year old rock song lyric cause for civic celebration? When the Eagles first decided to "Take it Easy" in a song written by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey in 1973, the reference to "standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona" was just a catchy almost-rhyme.

Along the infamous Route 66, there really is a corner in Winslow, Arizona, on which you can stand. They even named it "Standin' On a Corner Park" after the catchy line in the Eagles song. I was surprised to find there was such a place. On the corner of Kinsley Avenue and Second Street/Route 66 is a statue of a young man leaning on his guitar, and on the store window behind him is a painting of a woman driving past in a red Ford pickup. Across the street is a Route 66 memorabilia shop playing Eagles songs on a continuous loop. They have every Route 66 souvenir you can imagine. Painted in the intersection is a huge Route 66 road sign. If you stand there long enough, you will see a steady stream of people stopping to take a photo on the corner. Many will ask you to take the photos for them. It's a great way to meet fellow travelers, and it's also good karma.

The Eagles made Winslow, Arizona famous in their song "Take It Easy." It's a song almost everyone knows, hums and sings. It has put Winslow on the map.

Ford F-500 - Route 66 - Winslow Arizona

A line from "Take It Easy," the 1972 hit by the Eagles, has become the lifeblood of tiny Winslow in Arizona. Winslow's "Standin' on the Corner Park" on the corner of Second Street and Kinsley Avenue, on Route 66, the Mother Road, celebrates the song with the catchy line
..... Well I'm a standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and such a fine sight to see.
It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin' down to take a look at me .....

A cherry-red vintage flatbed Ford truck is parked nearby. And on a brick wall behind the statue and truck is a large mural featuring a grinning blonde in such a truck, who clearly - as the song says - is "slowin' down to take a look" at the itinerant all-American musician who has caught her eye.

Is it worth seeing? Of course it is! It's on RT 66! And to be sure you know that it is, the highway number is painted on the street.
A statue, a mural, a flatbed F-500 Ford and music seemingly coming from out of nowhere makes this a great little street corner park the type of place that makes traveling off the interstate so much more interesting.
