Point Vicente Lighthouse on the cliffs of Palos Verdes California

Standing on the most southwesterly point of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Los Angeles, Point Vicente Lighthouse has long been one of this area's jewels. To the landsman, the lighthouse is a scenic delight and a continual attraction to sightseers, photographers and painters. To the mariner, the lighthouse is an aid to navigation which marks the northern end of the Catalina Channel on the Pacific coast. Before the installation of the Point Vincente Light on May 1,1926, many ships and seamen went to their graves on this disastrous, rocky stretch of southern California's Pacific coast.
During World War II the Coast Artillery men didn't want Point Vicente's light to be too good of an aid to enemy navigation. The 1000 watt light was replaced by a tiny 25 watt bulb, and black out curtains hung ready for use in all the windows. After the war, when the light was returned to its normal power, the endlessly rotating beam became a glaring disturbance to local residents and a hazard to motorists on Palos Verdes Drive.
Keepers coated the inside of the inland facing windows with a coat of opaque, pearly white paint to end the flash of the beacon on peninsula bedroom walls.
That's when the "Lady Of The Light" appeared. In the dim light through the painted windows, some saw the shape of a tall serene woman in a flowing gown who would slowly pace the tower's walkway. In 1955, a thicker coat of paint ended the spirit's nightly romp around the tower, and the ghost has not been seen officially since.
Today Point Vicence Light Station still sends out it's beacon across the Catalina Channel. It is one of the biggest and brightest lights along the California coast.

Point Fermin Light - San Pedro - Southern California

Its rugged Monterey-style bluffs, its 1874 lighthouse, its backdrop of cliffs and surf, with pelicans soaring overhead, its vistas, its charismatic winds, the 1974 movie "Chinatown" and many other films have made San Pedro's Point Fermin in southern California a popular location known worldwide.
Restored to its original configuration, Point Fermin Lighthouse is built in a variant of the Queen Anne architectural style known as Stick Style. This style was used for six American lighthouses built between 1873 and 1874, of which only two others are still standing. It sits literally at the southernmost tip of Los Angeles at the southern end of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
Point Fermin Lighthouse overlooks a picturesque stretch of coastline. The view from the tower is one of the finest obtainable on this section of California's southern coast. Southwestards, as far as the eye can see, is the limitless stretch of blue ocean, sparkling and scintillating in the golden sunshine like a liquid sapphire encrusted with diamonds, and the tender turquoise of the sky blends into the deeper blue of the sea in a faint, filmy mist. Out toward the southwest lies Catalina, the gray-blue peaks to the little island standing out softly against the sky. Turning in the direction of San Pedro Harbor, and following the curving shore line, white in the distance, the cottages of Terminal Island, Long Beach and Alamitos can be plainly seen, nestling confidingly along the bluff. In the middle distance you catch a glimpse of the San Pedro breakwater, reaching out of Deadman's Island as if to soften its dreary desolation and to link it to the shore. To the west is the long, broken shore line, with its sharp, rocky points projecting into the sea, while to the east Sentinel Rock stands 30 feet high and 30 feet from the cliff.

The Light At Piedras Blancas - San Simeon, California

The Piedras Blancas Light Station (PBLS) at the southern end of Big Sur, just to the north of San Simeon on Highway One, CA has a very interesting history. The land on which it is built once belonged to indigenous peoples. A visit to the light house takes one back to a time when life on the coast was simple and rough. Over the past 135 years, battered by wind and weather, Piedras Blancas Light has borne silent witness to many calamities including shipwrecks, wartime submarine attacks and earthquakes.
The towering Piedras Blancas Light Station is a great place to gaze out onto the vast Pacific Ocean. The views are stunning. Bring layers of clothing and a baseball hat or ski cap, even if it's sunny, as the winds can be wicked on the point where the lighthouse is located.
The The Piedras Blancas area acts as a preserve for local flora and fauna. Bring a good pair of binoculars so you can see the nesting Peregrine Falcon nest nearby, the countless Pelagic and Brandt's Comorants, and numerous marine mammals including California sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, northern fur seals and northern elephant seals - some 15,000 of these mammoth animals come ashore here.

Point Pinos Light - Lighthouse on the golf course - Pacific Grove Monterey, Central CA

Point Pinos Light, on the Pacific coast of central California. was built in 1855 to guide ships through the dangerous southern entrance of the Monterey Bay. The name Punta de los Pinos translated to 'Point of the Pines', is an appropriate designation for the thickly wooded northern tip of the Monterey Peninsula where the pines grew almost to the water's edge.
Often spelled Point PiƱos, Point Pinos Lighthouse is the oldest continuously-operating lightstation on the West Coast of the United States and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Even the lens is original. Its first lightkeeper, Charles Layton, was killed in 1856 while serving as a member of the sheriff's posse chasing the notorious outlaw, Anastacio Garcia.
In early Pacific Grove days Point Pinos Lighthouse was more than an aid to navigation; it was a social hub. Robert Louis Stevenson wrote of visiting lightkeeper Allen Luce in 1879 in 'The Old Pacific Capital', and Mrs. Emily Fish, Point Pinos's most famous lightkeeper, was nicknamed "The Socialite Lightkeeper" for the many parties and dinners she held at the building.

Mark Abbot Memorial Lighthouse - Lighthouse on the beach - Santa Cruz, CA, USA

This portion of the California Coastal National Monument is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
Named for a surfer who died here in 1965, Mark Abbott Memorial lighthouse stands at Point Santa Cruz, the cliff's major promontory. The Santa Cruz Surfing Museum is here, in the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse, and just off the point, geography and ocean waves conjoin to create the waves at Steamer Lane that Santa Cruz is famous for.
Santa Cruz beaches can be foggy in early summer, sometimes all day long. So if you go to Lighthouse Field and Mark Abbot Memorial Light expecting to watch the surfers at Steamer Lane (near the surfer statue), you could be disappointed. Some days, the water at this internationally renowned surfing hotspot can be calmer than your bathtub.
