Emergency exit Chicago IL

In Chicago (a city that has a special history with fire), people are so used to seeing the old iron fire escapes on the outside of buildings built anywhere from the late 1880s up thru the 1930s that they just blend into the rest of the noise.

Every facet of the urban landscape has a story to tell; so much so that we tend to take for granted much of our surroundings. Have you ever stopped to consider the history or unique composition of a fire escape? Within a year after the first patent for a fire escape was issued in 1887 (to Ms. Anna Connelly), the U.S. Patent Office had issued patents for 1,100 competitive designs and unique styles, encompassing many different forms and every conceivable material. The real beauty of Ms. Connelly's invention was that these inexpensive metal structures could be attached to both new and existing buildings.

Does the complex in which you live or work have a fire escape? Would you use this historical architectural curiosity if there was a fire in your building? If well maintained, a fire escape is still a life saving structure. Unfortunately, it's often difficult to tell if a fire escape is safe to use or not.

Residential buildings tend to have an additional, unique set of problems when it comes to their old emergency escapes. It seems that they get a lot of use ... just not for their intended purpose. City inspectors and fire escape maintenance companies commonly report the passages being exploited as urban gardens, personal balconies, clothes dryers, and smoking lounges.

Hanging there on buildings all over The Loop these Escheresque, geometrical structures, add yet another distinctive element to the facades of Chicago's historic buildings. Today, with the advent of new fangled construction materials and redundant fire prevention systems, Chicago's updated building codes have done away with the fire escape as a component of new construction, going so far as to prohibit them in all but very, very specific circumstances.

Müllersches Volksbad - Munich Germany

The turn-of-the-century bath house known as Müllersches Volksbad - translated as Mueller's Public Baths - was made possible by a generous donation by the man for whom the pool is named.

Built from 1897-1901, this amazing building is really a mix of a number of different styles. South German Baroque architecture tends to dominate though the keen eye will also recognize Roman thematic elements as well as Art Nouveau components on the exterior of the building. Inside, the Art Nouveau décor is magnificent and has stood the test of time. It's easy to see why this spectacular pool was lauded as the grandest and most modern of all baths in Germany, and is today Munich’s most splendid and one of Europe’s most beautiful indoor swimming pools. Swimmers will be hard pressed to find another setting like this.

Taking a dip in the Müller'sches Volksbad allows you to experience bathing culture in the original sense. This spa in the more than 100 years old Art-Nouveau building equipped with state-of-the-art technology is an aesthetic experience. Relax, enjoy and pamper yourself with a massage.

Schauenstein - A typical Upper-Franconian town

Schauenstein is a typical,small,upper-Franconian town in Bavaria, Germany. First mentioned in the year 1230, it was declared "city" in 1291 under the Knights of Wolfstriegel. They sold the place in 1386 to the Burgrafs of Nuremberg (Nürnberg). In the 1807 Peace Treaty of Tilsit, Schauenstein, together with the Prussian Principality of Bayreuth, were passed on to France - and came to Bavaria in 1810.

After the end of World War II in 1945, Schauenstein belonged to the American zone of occupation, and the American military administration established a so-called DP Camp to house Jewish Displaced Persons (DP). A grave-field with plaque in the village cemetery reminds of 31 prisoners who were victims of NAZI tyranny and are buried there. At times, doctor Josef Mengele was hiding in Schauenstein.

The rock formations 'Anticipating Virgin' and 'Sleeping Giant' are considered Schauenstein's natural attractions. Its architectural monument are an impressive medieval castle from the 13th century, its Evangelical Lutheran parish church, and its market place.

During its long history Schloss Schauenstein was more than once severely damaged, but again and again restored and expanded. It houses the castle church, the Schauensteiner Local History Museum and part of the fire brigade Museum. The neu-gothic Evangelical Lutheran parish church, built in the 15th century, rebuilt in the 19th century, holds a large mural from the 16th century, displaying St. Christophorus. Schauenstein's marketplace is a protected historical monument.

Schauenstein's cuisine is Franconian down to Earth, with a wide selection of roast with potato dumplings, as well as carp and venison. There are also snacks with sausage and ham specialities. "Schnitz und Baggala", a vegetable soup with potato pancakes, is a Schauenstein specialty rarely available in restaurants.

St. Mary's Column Marienplatz Munich

The Marienplatz (Mary's Square, i.e. St. Mary, Our Lady's Square) in Munich, Germany is "the heart of the city" since the city was founded in 1158 by Henry the Lion.
In the Middle Ages, the square used to be a market place as well as the place where tournaments and festivities took place. The square was originally known as Schrannen but it was renamed Marienplatz (St. Mary's Square) as a way to ask Virgin Mary (the patron saint of Bavaria) to protect the town from a cholera epidemic.

In 1638 elector Maximilian I erected the Mariensäule, an eleven-meter-high Marian column in the centre of Marienplatz, to show his gratitude that München and the Bavarian town of Landshut were almost spared of the destruction by the Swedes during the Thirty Years’ War. The column (Mariensäule) is topped by a golden statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon as the Queen of Heaven. The figure, created in 1590, was originally located in Munich's Frauenkirche. At each corner of the column's pedestal is a statue of a putto. The four putti are each depicted fighting a different beast, symbolizing the city's overcoming of adversities: war represented by the lion, pestilence by the cockatrice, hunger or famine by the dragon and heresy by the serpent.

Mariensäule in Muenchen was the first column of this type built north of the Alps and inspired erecting other Marian columns in this part of Europe. Today all official distances in Munchen are measured from Mariensaule, and Mariensaeule is still used as the topological center of Bavaria for topographical surveys.
