Lassen Volcanic National Park - Living museum of vulcanism

Lassen Volcanic National Park is a living museum of vulcanism. It contains all four of the world's known types of volcanoes - stratovolcanoes, volcanic domes, shield volcanoes, and cinder cones. And there are various types of hot springs, geysers, fumaroles, vents, and other geothermal features.
At about 7000 foot altitude, Sulphur Works is one of the primary geothermal areas within the park. It features fumaroles, mudpots, hot steam, boiling water, and other geothermal features, including the ever-present hydrogen sulfide gas. The surface is composed of andesite rock.
The Sulfur Works, a bright yellow patch in Lassen Volcanic Park, is the core of Mt Tehama which was once 11,000 feet high. The sulfur pots stink and are indeed dangerous. They boil and bubble, and one can easily imagine how awful it would be to step through the earth and into that gray goo. Yet the colors of the covering landscape are wonderfully subtle shades of pewter, gold, and browns.
Lassen Volcanic National Park is best described as weird, unusual, spectacular, fun, beautiful, majestic, wild, somewhat surreal and challenging.

Lassen Volcanic National Park - Sulfur Works

Lassen Volcanic National Park is a spectacular example of wilderness at its best; rugged landscapes, volcanic activity, abundant wildlife and water in every form.
Almost four-fifths of the park is designated Wilderness, a land of gorgeous lakes teeming with fish, thick forests of pine and fir, many splendid creeks, and a fascinating hodgepodge of extinct and inactive volcanoes. Best of all, this mountainous country remains relatively uncrowded by California standards.
Before the arrival of the white man, the Lassen area was frequented by people from 4 Indian tribes - the Maidu, Atsugewi, the Yana and the Yahi. However, the discovery of gold in California drew many white adventurers to the area and exerted a great deal of pressure on native inhabitants. Fur trappers carried malaria to the peoples of the area. The Yani and Yahi largely disappeared.
The Sulfur Works in Lassen Volcanic National Park is where there is still heat. Geologically this is a young volcano so the heat is subsurface - either hot rock or magma. Water seeps down and gets heated and the fluids and vapors come up here.

'Oregon, My Oregon'

Oregon, the "Beaver State", a state of the northwest United States in the Pacific Northwest, is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, and California.
It isn't a place you see as much as you do. Sure you can sightsee its beautiful coast, volcanic mountains, crystal-clear lakes and rivers and deserts that stretch as far as the eye can see. But to really know Oregon, you have to get out and experience Oregon's treasures. You can hike anywhere, but in Oregon you can hike everywhere. Oregon has trails through alpine passes, ancient fossil beds, trails overlooking the Pacific Ocean, urban hikes and the Lewis and Clark trail. And with its temperate winters and breezy summers, you can hike nearly everywhere almost anytime.
Oregon is one of the best places in the world for outdoor adventure and a very beautiful and peaceful place to live.
("Oregon, My Oregon" is Oregon's state song.)

Oregon - Land of the setting sun

When Easterners with a desire for adventure heard the magic words "go west," they headed for Oregon country. Their sense of adventure lingers today in Oregon, where seven distinctive regions - the Coast, Portland Metro, Mt. Hood/Columbia River Gorge, the Willamette Valley, Southern Oregon, Central Oregon, and Eastern Oregon - represent a wealth of diverse climates, cultures and recreational opportunities.
The best thing about Oregon, U.S.A., is the wilderness and all the wildlife living in it. All one has to do to witness Oregon's beauty is to walk out the front door.
Oregon, which has more designated scenic byways and tour routes than any other state, is a dramatic land of many changes. From the rugged Oregon seacoast, to the high mountain passes of the Oregon Cascades, the lush greenery and magnificent waterfalls, the stony lava beds and Ponderosa pines of the high desert, Oregon's natural beauty is gorgeous. It's a place where people often find themselves roaming endlessly with no other goal than powdery slopes, lighthouse views or salmon run.
Many people, Oregonians included, take Oregon for granted. They need to take a step back, and realize what they truly have. Nothing beats Oregon's beautiful landscape and the serenity of its remote areas.
"She Flies With Her Own Wings" (State Motto)

Whitebark Pine trees Overlooking Crater Lake - Oregon

Whitebark Pine is one of the hardiest tree species, but due to almost constant winds, the whitebark pines clinging to the rocky soil along the crater rim surrounding Crater Lake, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon, are often deformed and stunted. This five-needle pine grows under the harshest environmental conditions, frequently as a low, twisted, 'krummholz' shrub, a small twisted tree, or a clump of trees so close they appear as one.
Whitebark Pines are the elders of the ecosystem, and its rooftop. They dont produce seedcones until theyve lived nearly one hundred years, and then continue to produce them for several centuries, even a millenium. However, people often admire whitebarks more when they are dead and become twisted silver-gray "ghost" trees than when they are alive and healthy.

Twisted Whitebark Pine Tree - Crater Lake - Oregon

Many of the Whitebark Pine trees (Pinus albicaulis) along the rim of Crater Lake, Crater Lake National Park in Oregon, are stunted and deformed by constant exposure to wind. Thriving in thin soils and dry air, on cold, windy, rocky mountaintops where few other plants or animals survive, whitebarks grow slowly and live long - more than a thousand years. Their trunks becoming twisted and gnarled over time, and many look barren of any needles, but it doesnt mean they are dead.
Whitebark Pine is one of the most ecologically important tree species living in the western United States. Thirty years ago, healthy whitebark pines graced Wizard Island's summit crater, but today they are reduced to bleached, weathered skeletons, and visitors can now only experience them as nonliving relics.
Without them, there is serious danger that misconceptions about nature and even ourselves may arise.
