Buddha in solid silver - Jin'an Temple Shanghai

Jing'an Si, or Jing'an Temple, a Buddhist temple characterized by lavish wealth in Shanghai, China, feels like an island of peace in a chaotic city, a world away from the urban bustle outside.
Its centerpiece is the Jing'an Silver Buddha, which is 29 feet tall and is made from 15 tons of solid silver.
To many, Buddha has become a universal symbol for prayer, reflection, and deep mysticism. Kneeling on the pads looking up, one is easily entranced by the silver eyes of this giant Buddha looking down upon you. It is not difficult to imagine why people, both rich and poor, come in from the streets just to spend some quiet time in prayer and to bring their offers.

Guanyin Bodhisattva - Jin'an's rare female Buddha

As the oldest shrine in Shanghai, China, the locals regard Jin'an Temple higher than the tourist favorite Jade Buddha Temple.
In Jingan's east gallery stands the Guanyin Bodhisattva, a rare female Buddha carved from a thousand year old camphor tree. This goddess, the bodhisattva of compassion and provider of children, stands on a lotus-shaped base and is 6.2 meter tall. As all Bodhisattvas, she shares only one of the 32 physical attributes of a Buddha - the elongated earlobes.
In China Guanyin Bodhisattva is one of the most popular of Chinese deities. In ancient times of suffering and poverty, Guanyin used her breast milk to feed the rice plants and, therefore, the people.

Monks chanting - Jing'an Temple Shanghai

Most of Buddha's followers try to be good while still living their normal lives, but some of his followers adopt the idea of getting away from the world so they can work full-time as monk or nun, being good and pure for a monthly salary.
Built between 220 and 280 AD, Jing'an Temple is one of the oldest temples in Shanghai, China. With its unmistakable bright yellow walls shining brightly on Shanghai's busiest road, Nanjing Xi Lu, Jing an si is a popular attraction where monks can often be seen chanting.

Shanghai Exhibition Center - Soviet Friendship Mansion

Shanghai Exhibition Center (SEC), one of the most representative architectures in Shanghai, was completed in 1955. Its original name was the "Palace of Sino-Soviet Friendship", but once the honeymoon period between China and the Soviet Union was over and relations began to sour it was renamed to "Shanghai Pavilion".
Referred to as "the wedding cake" by resident foreigners, the Center in its monumental glory, with its bold Bolshevik strokes, classical pillars, marbled halls, rich stucco walls, showy chandeliers, intricate metalwork, stained-glass windows and gilded spire topped with the Soviet star was designed in the Russian neoclassical style of architecture.
The SEC is a classy counterpoint to the surrounding mix of sleek modern glass towers, ungainly early Opening- and Reform-era tile-clad high rises and remaining strips of pre-war Shanghai low-rise shops and lane houses.

Temple Pagoda Zhujiajiao - Shanghai China

It is refreshing to come to Zhujiajiao from Shanghai. While Shanghai is going through urbanization at incredible speed, it is a relief to find a small village, not so far from the ever-growing megalopolis, that fits the image of serene, Old China.
Zhujiajiao - a town with over 1,000 years of history, features rivers, bridges, old streets and gardens. Small rivers crisscross with 36 old bridges on them.
Over 1,000 houses first built in Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) stand along both sides of nine narrow streets.
I hope new waves of change will be kept at bay from an ancient village like Zhu jia jiao. As they say, "once the water is out of the bucket, it’s hard to pour it back."

Buddhist Pagoda - Shanghai China

A pagoda, sometimes also called "stupa", a structure usually built on sacred ground, is a place of meditation and worship of Buddha, built in traditional Asian style.
Indian stupas were originally characterized by a dome-shaped steeple, but combined with the traditional architectural styles of China, they acquired new forms of radiant splendor. Originally built on circular or square bases the octagonal bases became predominant and the pagoda began to develop its characteristic multitiered roofs with up-swept gables.
Whether a pagoda is called a Zhenshen Sarira pagoda (in which the real remains of Buddha or saints were buried) or a Fashen Sarira pagoda (in which the souls of Buddha or saints were supposed to be buried) is determined by what it actually containes. Most pagodas are Zhenshen Sarira pagodas; rarely is a pagoda a Fashen pagoda, because Buddhists hold the real remains of Buddha or saints in very high regard.
