Ships Lining Up At Land's End

The towering rock formations, called Lands End, at the southern tip of Mexico's Baja Peninsula straddle two bodies of water, the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. They are renowned worldwide, and ships are the best way to get up close and personal with them.

Schooner, galleons, Buccaneer Pirate Ships, sail boats, glass-bottom boat rides, snorkeling excursions and deep-sea fishing trips are popular in Cabo. They the best way to get a sense of the magnificence of Los Arcos.

Baja is also the Ultimate Winter Getaway! Escape the cold to relax in the sun! The Baja Peninsula and Mexico's Sea of Cortez offer spectacular marine and desert wilderness all year round - or, shop at the pier's souvenir market or relax on a beautiful beach.

La Catrina With Purple Umbrella

'Day of the Dead', the holiday known in Spanish as 'Dia de los Muertos,' is especially popular in Mexico. Decorations of skeleton ladies are among the holiday's observances.

Mexico's elegant and classy 'Skeleton Lady', La Calavera Catrina, ('Dapper Skeleton', 'Elegant Skull') is getting new attention more than a century after she was born. The macabre figure has grown to symbolize the Day of the Dead. It is common to see La Catrina embodied as part of the celebrations of Dia de los Muertos throughout the country; the female skeleton has become a motive for the creation of female skeleton statues or metal sculptures with long dress and umbrella, as well as handcrafts made from clay or other materials. Her representations may vary, as well as the hat.

Day of the Dead festivities recently have begun to fuse with the American celebration of Halloween in some areas by embracing trick or treating.

March Of The Seagull

The seagull took an evening stroll along the kayaks on the beautiful beach of Playa Punta Balandra in a bay near La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The waters were shimmering with light and there was a pleasant salty sea smell in the air. It was very quiet.

Playa Balandra is one of the most beautiful beaches of Mexico. The crystal clear water is shallow, calm and transparent, soft white sand and a color really hard to describe. Surrounded by desert vegetation, dunes and cactus, Playa Balandra gives a lunar landscape, enriched with local wildlife. There is no bar or restaurant. And probably for this reason, it is even more beautiful.

Sometimes you have to sit very still, so the story can find you. Always, there is a level of trust that there is one, even though you might not be aware of it in the moment. The gentle water sounds on boats and the leaving heat of the day sets the stage.

Sunset Over Cabo

Rejuvenate your senses on a breathtaking coast of Mexico, where land ends and dreams begin - navigate through Los Arcos at Land's End - discover the romance and adventure of Mexico's Baja Coast ... just be.

As you gaze out across the Pacific Ocean, you'll marvel at the changing colors of the sky and the horizon emblazoned in shades of fiery gold. Then, just as the sun sets, the delicate mix of evening colors mix with the browns and greens of the desert to create stunningly romantic, almost oriental moments.

Cabo San Lucas, where miles of beach and turquoise Pacific waters intoxicate the spirit offers a sanctuary for the soul.

Kids and adults love to fly kites, and there is no better landscape or climate on earth for kite flying than Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico.

Making your own kite can be an act of artistry. But even the selection of a store-bought kite is a mode of personal expression and a celebration of what's beautiful to you. Think of it as having happiness on a string. Flying a kite is the ultimate carefree pastime. That makes it the perfect metaphor - and a fine activity - for health promotion. Morenci - A Beauty Of A Copper Mine

Morenci Mine in Southeast Arizona, about 50 miles northeast of Safford, is an open-pit copper mining complex. It is one of North America's largest producers of copper and one of the largest open-pit mines in the world.

Morenci operates continuously and has a workforce of 2000 plus employees, producing 840 million pounds of copper per year. It mines 830,000 tons of rock per day. Morenci is a "zero-discharge" operation. Virtually all of the water used at Morenci is recycled, some of it many times over. Morenci's operations pioneered the use of GPS system technology and computer-controlled dispatching in its haul trucks, shovels and other heavy equipment. The history of mining in Morenci, Arizona is still being written.

Sometimes, mining and nature get along remarkably well. Morenci Mine in has become a haven for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. One explanation for the sheep's attraction to the mine is that the human activity keeps predators away. The sheep dot the Morenci landscape, seemingly comfortable around the hustle and bustle of the mine. They are so prevalent that it's easy to tell that the 200 to 300 bighorn sheep that roam the countryside are healthy and hardy - so much so that the Morenci herds are being used to establish or replenish other herds around.

Pump Jack A Texas Icon

People have been pumping oil for thousands of years, and, while there is some dispute as to the first modern oil well, its construction can be placed some time in the 1850s. The pump jack didn’t come onto the scene until almost 70 years later. However, the distinctive appearance of the pump jack has become iconic and these devices are often used as symbols of the oil and gas industry.

It was in a Texas oil field that the first modern-day pump jack drastically changed the face of drilling in 1925. The pumpjack, an oil field icon known by many names like oil horse, donkey pumper, nodding donkey, pumping unit, horsehead pump, rocking horse, beam pump, dinosaur, sucker rod pump (SRP), grasshopper pump, Big Texan, thirsty bird, or jack pump - consists of a long beam moved by an external power source. There are a lot of pumpjacks dotting the Texas landscape.

The evolution of technology for pumping oil from the ground is reflected in thousands of small, marginally producing oil wells reaching deep into often stubborn reserves. Marginal oil and natural gas wells number about 650,000 of the nation’s 876,000 wells. Once shutdown, they are lost forever. Keeping them in production has long been a challenge for a special breed of oilman, one who combines technical skills with hard work in the field.

Bell Tower Mission San Jose, TX

San José y San Miguel de Aguayo Mission, one of the five Spanish missions in San Antonio, Texas, was founded in the early eighteenth century. Numerous Indian groups were represented at San José. The mission was to acquaint the Indians with Christian teaching, European values, and vocational skills and to convert them to useful citizens of the empire.
In the summer of 1794 Governor Manuel Muñoz carried out the secularization of San José, a process whereby some of the mission holdings were distributed among proprietors. With the departure of the last Franciscan, Father José Antonio Díaz de Léon, in 1824, San José Mission was formally closed after more than a century of service. Beginning about 1813, troops were stationed intermittently at the mission. They caused considerable damage. The steps to the bell tower fell in 1903, and the tower itself tumbled down in 1928.

In 1932 major restoration was started on the mission structures. The church, which had lost its dome, bell tower, and a wall, was rededicated in 1937. The mission grounds were declared a national and state historical site in 1941, and on November 10, 1978, San José Mission became part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.

Tower Life Building San Antonio

The Tower Life Building in San Antonio, Texas, which opened in 1929, was originally named the Smith-Young Tower, and conceived as part of a larger complex called Bowen's Island Skyscrapers, which included the 1927 Plaza Hotel. This project was halted by the Great Depression.

The eight sided, neo-gothic brick and terra-cotta tower (complete with gargoyles) was San Antonio's tallest building for 59 years until completion of the Marriott Rivercenter in 1988. It also was San Antonio's tallest office building for 60 years until the completion of the Weston Centre in 1989. In 1991 the Tower Life Building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2010 work began to remove an obsolete 164-foot television antenna that was installed in 1953. The original crown was restored and topped with a 100-foot flagpole.

The octagonal edifice has the appearance of an elaborate lighthouse, a beacon in the darkness. Pointed arches and a beautiful green tile roof give the building its European context. At night, dramatic lighting adds height and intensity to the tower, which, like Gothic cathedrals, emphasizes by refined vertical ascent the desire of humanity to reach out to mysteries far beyond.

San Fernando Cathedral - San Antonio, TX

Located at the historic center of the city, San Fernando Cathedral and its surrounding plazas served as the center of daily life in San Antonio throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. The church building as it exists today is part Spanish Colonial that dates from 1739 together with a larger, French Gothic-style nave which was added about 1874. This church is the oldest operating cathedral in the United States.

While its current structure has been greatly expanded and renovated over the years, the walls of the original church form the sanctuary of the cathedral today. Built with austere white stone and twin steeples, the San Fernando De Bexar Cathedral has a commanding presence at first glance. In traditional French Gothic form, the interior of the San Fernando Cathedral is a feast for the eyes. Admire the statues, intricate detail found in the stained glass windows and dramatic columns and archways. The history of the cathedral is collectively told through icons and objects throughout.

The Cathedral of San Fernando isn't just a historical landmark and a sanctuary that provides a place for worship, but has become the ecumenical, cultural, civic and service center of San Antonio, TX.

Mission San Jose - San Antonio, TX

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in Texas plays a key role in telling the story of Spanish colonialists and Native Americans of the Southwest.

The park preserves the largest intact concentration of Spanish Colonial buildings in the United States today, including exquisite mission churches with their Romanesque, Moorish, and Spanish baroque designs, dating as far back as 1720. More than 1.2 million people visit San Antonio Missions National Historical Park each year.

All four mission churches - San Jose, Concepcion, San Juan, and Espada - are still active Catholic parishes and churches. They represent an unbroken connection from present day hustle and bustle of the seventh largest city in the country, to the time when San Antonio was part of the sparsely populated northern frontier of New Spain.

Welcome To The State Of Texas

Explored by the Spanish in the 16th and 17th centuries, Texas became a province of Mexico. In 1836 Texans declared independence from Mexico as the Republic of Texas (Stephen Austin; Sam Houston). After a 10-year struggle to remain independent, Texas became the 28th U.S. state in 1845. Its boundary with Mexico was confirmed after the Mexican-American War (1848).

In the American Civil War Texas seceded from the Union (1861); it was readmitted in 1870. After the war, railroad building and increased shipping helped expand the economy, and the discovery of oil in 1901 transformed it. While Texas still leads all other states in oil and natural gas production and in petroleum-refining capacity, its manufacture of electronics, aerospace components, and other high-technology items is increasingly important. It is also a leading cotton, cattle, and sheep producer in the U.S.

Today Texas is the second largest state in both area and population. Since the 1960s three sons (or adopted sons) of Texas have been president of the United States: Lyndon Johnson, George Herbert Walker Bush, and George Walker Bush.

San Antonio Mission Walk San Jose

The missions of San Antonio are a main factor in the history of Texas and the core of the development of the city of San Antonio.

The legacy and history of San Antonio and this region began with a simple ceremony when in 1718 Franciscans and Spanish representatives established the first mission. Within 13 years, five were located along the San Antonio River. The missions’ purpose? To acculturate and Christianize the native population and make them Spanish citizens.

Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo was the largest and the most known in the 1720s and was know as "The Queen of the Missions." Founded by Fray Antonio Margil de Jsu’s, it was know as the model of Texas missions. Mission San José served as an economic enterprise involved in agricultural and ranching endeavors and regional trade, and a vocational and educational center.
