Prague Wenceslas Square and National Museum

During the Middle Ages a horse market (Koňský trh), Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí) in Prague, CZ, got its present name in the mid-19th century. It is named after Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia, and it is part of the historic centre of Prague, a World Heritage Site. Less a square than a boulevard, Wenceslas Square has the shape of a very long (750 m, total area 45,000 m²) rectangle. The northwest end runs up against the border between the New Town and the Old Town. This is the main centre of modern Prague surrounded by shops, cinemas, office blocks, hotels, restaurants and cafés. Wenceslas Square has been the scene of a great deal of Czech history. In 1969 the university student Jan Palach burnt himself to death here in protest against the Warsaw Pact invasion, and in November 1989 protest meetings against police brutality were held here. They eventually led to the Velvet Revolution and the end of communism in Czechoslovakia. In the middle of the square is a monument of St Wenceslas on a horse accompanied with sculptures of four Czech patron saints. The National Museum (Narodni muzeum), which dominates the upper part of Wenceslas Square, is the largest and oldest museum in the Czech Republic. Founded in 1818 as Prague's regional natural history museum, this architectural symbol of the Czech National Revival was completed in 1890 in a Neo-Renaissance style. It is more than 70 m high. Its hall, façade, staircase and ramp are decorated with sculptures made by famous Czech artists. Prague's National Museum houses a vast array of changing exhibitions as well as permanent collections devoted to archaeology, anthropology, mineralogy, natural history, numismatics and fine art.

The Iron Knight - Darth Vader watches over Prague CZ

Thousands of statues watch over the city the city of Prague from pedestals in public squares, parks, building alcoves, church eaves and even bridges. So pervasive are the statues's eyes that a visitor may experience that eerie feeling one has when being secretly observed. One of these statues is The Iron Man (or The Iron Knight) outside Prague's New Town Hall. Although more than a hundred years old, it looks like the villain Darth Vader of the Star Wars movies, but one of the legends says that this sculpture is actually a knight forever frozen as a statue for being cruel. Is this statue evidence that Darth Vader wasn't an idea of George Lucas? Shall we fight for the sculptor's (Ladislav Saloun) copyright?

Fat Norway Rat

On average a rat in the wild has a life span of one year. Druing this time the female rat can have up to 84 babies. They, and the parasites they carry, spread many diseases. However, rats are highly intelligent and social animals. These rodents have an incredible ability to survive. They can scale walls and walk across telephone wires with ease. They are excellent swimmers - capable of navigating a half mile through open water. They are amazingly resilient, easily surviving falls up to 50 feet. By burrowing long tunnels, which can extend 4 vertical feet into the earth, they reduce their exposure to predators. And they are extremely compatible with human behavior and needs and are easy to train. So yes - rats in the wild are a pest but they are amazing animals. This guy bravely fought two cats ... and he got away. The Rat Rocks!
