Colorado - Where The Columbines Grow

The state of Colorado consists of many regions:

The Denver Area - most populous part of the state, with the large metro capital-city of Denver and its many suburbs

- The Eastern Plains - the least populated flat eastern half of the state, western agricultural country

- The Front Range - follows the northern part of the Rockies, including Boulder and such well-known attractions as Rocky Mountain National Park

- Northwestern Colorado - spectacular canyon-and-mesa country reminiscent of neighboring Utah

- South Central Colorado - the high country in the southern part of the Rockies, home to many ski resorts, including the towering San Juan Mountains, ("American Alps") with a broad, pleasant valley between them

- Southwestern Colorado - There is a special mystique about the southwest region of Colorado. It can be felt among ancient Anasazi Indian cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park and in the quiet of rugged mining ghost towns high in the San Juan Mountains. From the sheer depths of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to the exhilarating vistas from Grand Mesa, world's largest flattop mountain, the region is rich in western history, Victorian architecture and Native American cultures.

Colorado is home to no less than twenty-six ski resorts such as those in Vail and Breckenridge, and the state is blessed with national parks, grasslands and forests. Wildlife abounds, from bears to moose and raccoons to wolverines. It is packed full of things to do year-round. Sun-drenched days, cobalt blue skies, cool evenings. Colorado makes you want to get out and experience all that the state has to offer.

Chicago - Old Water Tower

In the middle of Chicago, Il, a city known for its towers of glass and steel stands a tower made of stone that looks out of place. The Old Water Tower looks like an oversized set decoration from some Elizabethan play. But this isn't knights slaying dragons, this is the city slaking its thirst. Constructed in 1869 on the banks of Lake Michigan, using big limestone blocks, the Chicago Water Tower, with all its small neo-gothic towers resembles more a tiny European medieval castle than a water tower. The tower reaches a height of 154 ft or 47 meter and once towered over all the neighboring buildings. Today it is dwarfed by the many skyscrapers surrounding the tower.

The Water Tower and nearby pumping station were the only two buildings in downtown Chicago that survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1781 which razed the whole city to the ground. Since its survival of the Great Fire, the Water Tower became one of the city's most famous icons as it symbolized Chicago's resilience. It was threatened with demolition several times - in 1906, 1918 and 1948 - but it was saved each time thanks to a public outcry. The tower was eventually restored in 1962.

In May of 1969, during the year of its centennial anniversary, the Chicago Water Tower was selected by the American Water Works Association to be the first American Water Landmark. Today the tower is one of the most important historic attractions in Chicago. Of course the building is no longer used as a functioning water tower, but the area where it stands has become known as the Water Tower District, and one of Chicago's many skyscrapers is named after it. Many people don't realize that one can go inside the Old Water Tower. It houses the City Gallery which showcases works from local photographers.

35 East Wacker Chicago - Jewelers Building

One of the most remarkably beautiful buildings along the Chicago River is the octogenarian at Wacker Drive and Wabash, the Jeweler's Building, or as it is now known just by its address, 35 East Wacker. The Jeweler's Building, designed in the Beaux Arts and Renaissance styles, and built in 1926, is highly ornamented, with a sort of neo-baroque feel to it. Clad in fire proof terra cotta, the Jeweler's Building is truly one of the Chicago River gems. There are exquisite details everywhere you look. Its complex elements, including cupolas, spires and arched windows, combine to offer an extravagant and pleasing appearance that has led to its designation as a Chicago Landmark.

35 East Wacker is a skyscraper that successfully manages to meld historical styles drawn from Greco-Roman and Gothic architecture. The building, completed in 1926 and designed by Giaver & Dinkelberg, was built as an high tech office tower to attract tenants in the burgeoning jewelry trade - commemorated by the initials 'JB' for Jewelers Building. The lower 23 floors were serviced by automobile elevators that, for security reasons, transported the tenant, their jewels, and their car directly up to the office floor.

The structure of this building is typical to others of the early twentieth century in Chicago architecture. However, with the Jeweler's Building, a tower of an additional 17 stories was placed upon the main block of twenty-four stories. The crowning belvedere that marks the top of the building was originally designed as a nightclub known as the Stratosphere. Toay the dramatic and large dome houses an architectural showroom for Murphy/Jahn Architects.

Recently, ownership initiated a multi-year, multi-million dollar renovation to bring the property up to contemporary Class A standards. The interior of the the Jeweler's Building is being entirely re-built on a floor-by-floor basis with only the historic facade and structure remaining in place.
