Diablo Lake, in North Cascades National Park, Washington State, USA has a beautiful turquoise/green color which is especially striking in bright sunshine. This color results from suspended particles of rock "flour" - bits of rock which have been ground by glaciers and deposited into the lake. Paddling on a sheen of green can perk up anyone who ventures to emerald-colored Diablo Lake at the geographic center and, some would say, the aesthetic center of the North Cascades National Park.

National Bison Range. Moiese. MT
When bison began dwindling from the Great Plains, Salish-Kootenai tribal members transplanted bison from east of the Continental Divide into the Flathead Valley. Those buffalos later became the seed herd for the Moiese National Bison Range (NBR) and also supplemented the remnant herd of 25 animals that was hiding out in Yellowstone's Lamar Valley.
The National Bison Range, established in 1908, consists of 19,000 acres of natural grassland, which is now home to about 500 American buffaloes and other inhabitants such as birds, whitetail and mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and black bear. The animals can be observed from signposted roads in this reserve, north of Missoula in the Flathead Reservation.

National Bison Range Wildlife Refuge, MT, USA
The history of the bison, or buffalo, in the Flathead Valley began 1873 when Walking Coyote, a Pend d' Oreille Indian, returned from Blackfeet Country on the plains with five orphaned calves. By 1890, of the 30 to 70 million bison that once roamed the plains, less than 100 remained in the wild and overall there were fewer than 1,000 left. Having been part of a Federal government sponsored program of eradication during the Indian Wars, thereby removing a vital food source from the Plains Indians diet, and ensuring easier relocation onto Indian reservations, buffaloes were almost extinct.
In 1908 the National Bison Range (NBR), the only federal wildlife refuge for buffalos, was established in western Montana to provide a sanctuary for the American bison.

St. Mary Lake - Glacier National Park, MT
St. Mary Lake is the second largest lake in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA, created by a widening of the St. Mary River. Located on the east side of the park, the Going-to-the-Sun Road parallels the lake along its north shore. Here, the great plains end and the Rocky Mountains begin in an abrupt five thousand foot (1,500 m) altitude change, with Little Chief Mountain posing a formidable southern flank above the west end of the lake. The lake is 9.9 miles (15.9 km) long and three hundred feet (100 m) deep. During the winter, the lake often is frozen completely over with ice up to four feet (1 m) thick.

Jackson Glacier - Glacier National Park MT
Jackson Glacier is approximately the 7th largest of the remaining 25 glaciers in Glacier National Park located in the U.S. state of Montana. In 2005 glacier was measured at 250 acres (1.0 qkm), yet when first documented in 1850, the glacier also included the now separate Blackfoot Glacier and together, they covered 1,875 acres (7.59 qkm). Between 1966 and 2005, Jackson Glacier lost almost a third of its acreage. When the two glaciers were united prior to their separation sometime before 1929, they were known simply as Blackfoot Glacier.
