The Alamo Cenotaph - San Antonio, TX

From the Greek words kenos, (empty) and taphos, (tomb) - cenotaphs are tombs or monuments erected to honor a person or persons whose remains are elsewhere or their whereabouts unknown. Quite frequently cenotaphs are erected for soldiers killed in distant places or sailors lost at sea. This one in San Antonio's Alamo Plaza is sometimes referred to as "The" Cenotaph.

The Alamo Cenotaph in San Antonio, TX is a beautiful memorial to the men who died defending the ancient Alamo mission in 1836 against the army of Santa Anna rather than surrender to overwhelming odds. The sculpture stands adjacent to the old mission and is one of the largest works of famed Italian-born sculptor Pompeo Coppini from a design envisioned by architect Carlton Adams. The memorial stone of gray Georgia marble rests upon a slab base of pink Texas granite. The theme of the monument is 'The Spirit of Sacrifice'. On the north side appears a feminine figure symbolizing the state of Texas, holding the shields of Texas and the United States.

Begun in 1937, San Antonio's Alamo Cenotaph took two years to complete and is itself now a historical treasure.
