Pentax's New Optio for Novices

Terry Sullivan - PC Magazine

Nothing about the new Pentax Optio E30 compact digital camera will knock your socks off, especially given its somewhat bland design and plastic exterior. But with a list price just a nickel under $150, you won't loose your shirt either. The new 7-megapixel camera has a modest feature set: 3X optical zoom lens, a 2.4-inch LCD, a maximum aperture range of F/2.7 to F/4.8, 11 megabytes of on-board memory, and runs on two AA batteries. But it's not only compatible with SD. It can also store image and video on the newer SDHC-format of SD memory cards, which are higher capacity cards that are available in storage capacities greater than 2GB, which is the limit for SD cards.

Since it's a camera targeted for novices, the E30 features a Green Mode, a very simple auto mode that allows consumers the ability to simply point and shoot, without needing to worry about any exposure settings. However, the camera does have more than a dozen scene modes, which are accessible through a new interface, called a mode palette. Consumers can also shoot video clips at VGA (640 x 480) quality at 20 fps to the capacity of the card.
The Optio E30 will be available in next month. Stay tuned for our hands-on First Looks review of this and other cameras in the upcoming months.

Fuji Introduces New Digital Point-and-Shoots

PC Magazine - Wed Jan 3, 7:00 PM ET
The company announced the addition of four point-and-shoot digital cameras, three under--$300 models, and a pricier, niche superzoom camera.

Typically, camera manufacturers introduce their new digital camera models at the Photo Marketing Association trade show, which will take place this coming March in Las Vegas. This year, however, many are changing gears and are choosing CES as the backdrop to launch their latest products. And so it goes that Fuji is announcing the addition of four point-and-shoot digital cameras, three inexpensive models, all under $300, and a pricier, niche superzoom camera.
At the inexpensive end of the spectrum, Fuji launched two new A-series compact models, the six-megapixel FinePix A610 and eight-megapixel FinePix A800. Both feature a new icon-based graphic user interface (GUI), which the company hopes will be more intuitive. According to the company, there will also be descriptive text in the menu structure to help guide consumers to better understand the various functions and features on the new cameras. They both sport a 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5-inch LCD displays and run on AA batteries, although the cameras will include different top ISOs: the A610 will have a top ISO of 400, while the A800 will have an ISO of 800. The A610 will be available $129, and the A800 will be available for $179.
For the consumer looking to step up to the next level of digital camera, Fuji has introduced a new F-series camera, the eight-megapixel FinePix F40fd digital camera, which will sport a 3x optical lens and a 2.5 inch LCD. As the name indicates, this camera will feature face detection technology. As with other Fuji cameras that include this technology, such as the S6000fd, the F40fd will use a hardware-based system to detect up to 10 human faces in a scene, to assist in focusing and exposure-related settings. As with the S6000fd, the fact detection technology will also work not only in shooting mode, but also in playback mode. For example, with slide shows, it will auto rotate the image correctly and avoid faces positioned sideways or upside-down. Also, if you print directly from the camera, it can calculate the number of prints based on the number of faces it detects.
The F40fd will include the company's Real Photo technology and a top ISO setting of 2000, for better low-light shots. As with camera in the 2006 lineup, the Fuji cameras will also include an intelligent-flash system, or "i-Flash", to vary the flash intensity according to the lighting situation. And like the A-series cameras, there will be a new icon-based GUI. The FinePix F40fd will retail for $299.
The fourth digital camera Fuji is introducing is the IS-1 superzoom digital camera, which will have a fixed 10.7x, 28-300mm optical zoom lens, which is similar to the S6000fd. But to differentiate this superzoom, the company has made this camera an infrared-only digital camera. In doing so, they hope to tap into several vertical markets, including the law enforcement, medical/dental and science fields. It's also an alternative for those who may not be able to afford Fuji's first infrared-camera, the FinePix S3 Pro UVIR D-SLR. The IS-1 will list a $899, which is significantly cheaper the Fuji infrared D-SLR.
One intriguing feature found on three of the lower-end cameras is the addition of an SD memory card slot, which will accompany the usual xD Picture Card slot. This is the first time Fuji is including an SD slot, although it's obvious that they are bowing to the pressures of the marketplace, which show SD cards to be the prevalent memory card used in digital cameras. The IS-1 superzoom will feature both an xD Picture Card slot and a CompactFlash card slot.
The IS-1 will be available in February of 2007. All the other cameras will be available in March of 2007.

News photography and Photoshop

by Emily Church
"(Editor's note: Reuters.com asked Gary Hershorn, News Pictures Editor for North America, to discuss some of the tools photojournalists have used in the past - and what they use now - to produce pictures. On Monday, Reuters withdrew all 920 photographs by a freelance Lebanese photographer from its database after a review showed he had altered two images. You can see the images and reactions from readers here. Reuters, also the publisher of this report, tightened procedures for photographs from the conflict between Israel and the armed group Hizbollah and apologized for the case. You can read the company's statement here. You can send a comment to Hershorn from the link below and read his interview with NPR today here)

Photojournalism tools
News photographers routinely process images using Adobe Photoshop software. But there has been a basic premise in the world of photojournalism that what was allowed in making prints in the pre-digital days of darkrooms is all that is acceptable today. Back in the days of the darkroom, we used very basic tools to develop prints. In black and white printing, the contrast of a picture was controlled by a paper's grade. The higher the number of the paper, the higher the contrast. In the wire agency darkooms I've worked in, we typically used grades 3,4 and 5. We allowed "dodge and burn" to lighten or darken areas. A dodge tool was made by taping a small piece of cardboard the size of a quarter onto a paper clip. A burn tool was a piece of cardboard the size of an 8x10 sheet of paper with a hole in the center. If a print had dust spots caused by a dirty negative, we used Spotone, a photographic paint that was dabbed onto a print with a very fine paint brush to eliminate the unsightly marks. One other tool that was allowed when printing color pictures was changing color balance. This was done by placing filters between the light source of the enlarger and the paper that the image was being printed on. When we moved to scanning negatives and then to shooting digital, we began using Photoshop. This program allows us to do the same things we did in the darkroom. Changes in contrast, dodging and burning and color balance are now done with software. The most controversial tool in Photoshop that we use is the cloning tool. The only accepted use of this tool is to clear dust from the image. We have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to using the cloning tool to change content, and by that we mean removing something that exists in a photo, moving or replicating it or adding to a photo.
The tools we use in Photoshop are levels, curves and saturation for changing contrasts; and, color balance to bring the image back to the way the natural eye would see the color. Here is what we tell our photographers in the Handbook of Reuters Journalism.
Photoshop is a highly sophisticated image manipulation programme. We use only a tiny part of its potential capability to format our pictures, crop and size them and balance the tone and colour. For us it is a presentational tool.
The rules are - no additions or deletions, no misleading the viewer by manipulation of the tonal and colour balance to disguise elements of an image or to change the context.
Photoshop is a powerful image processing program with many more tools to help photographers produce the best quality image they can for the type of photography they do. There is not a Photoshop program for use by news photographers and another for advertising, where image-changing is tolerated. What we in the news photo community need to regulate is what tools are used for photojournalism and what are not. "

The Year in Photography

T.O.P. Photographer of the Year 2006

Jill Greenberg

"Getting kids to cry isn't the nicest thing to do." The words are Jill Greenberg's.

In 2006 we were treated to what passes for a controversy in contemporary photography. Greenberg, a commercial studio portraitist from Beverly Hills - she had previously gotten attention from the art world for a series of beautiful studio portraits of monkeys and apes - made a small series of pictures of young children crying. (A small exhibition catalog was published called End Times.) A blogger named Thomas Hawk (a pseudonym—his real name has been "outed," though I don't see any reason to repeat it here, since bloggers have a right to present themselves as they wish to be presented) wrote an inflammatory protest about the pictures, making charges of child abuse, among other things, and the argument has simmered incessantly from the blogosphere to the New York Times Magazine, including criticisms ranging all the way to death threats against Greenberg (that's a bit much) to outraged defenses of her by the owner of her gallery and her husband, some of which were later withdrawn.
