Dresden Hausmannsturm - Housemann Tower

The origin of Dresden's Royal Palace (Residenzschloss) goes back to the 13th century when a fort was built here. The fort was first expanded in the early 15th century. That's when the Hausmann Tower was built.
Like all landmarks in Dresden, the Royal Palace was destroyed in 1945. For more than 40 years the building stood in ruins. Reconstruction started in 1985 - mostly completed in 2006.
Today the Hausmannsturm (Housemann Tower) holds the Münzcabinet (Coin Cabinet) exhibits.

Dresden Kreuzkirche - Church of the Holy Cross

Dresden's first church, the Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church) was built in 1215. The church was reconsecrated in 1388 as the Kreuzkirche (Church of the Holy Cross).
Kreuzkirche has a history of being destroyed and rebuilt. Disaster struck again in February 1945 when the church was one of the many buildings that were damaged by fire bombardments. Reconstruction of the exterior started soon after the war, in 1946, and was completed in 1955. The interior does have excellent acoustics. The church's famous Kreuzchoir performs here regularly.

Weimar - UNESCO World Heritage Site

© Christine Till - CT-Graphics
Weimar's cultural heritage is vast. It is most often recognised as the place where Germany's first democratic constitution was signed after the First World War, giving its name to the Weimar Republic period 1918–1933.
However, the city was also the focal point of the German Enlightenment and home of the leading characters of the literary genre of Weimar Clacissism, the writers Goethe and Schiller. It was also the birthplace of the Bauhaus movement, founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius, with artists Wassily Kandinski, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, and Lyonel Feininger teaching in Weimar's Bauhaus School.
Many places in Weimar's city center have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. It is one of the most interesting and attractive small European towns.

Timber-frame house Weimar

Weimar certainly is not especially famous for half-timbered houses. However, a powerful half-timbered house, built in the 16th century, stands out. Like all old half-timbered houses it has a long history.
In 1838, after the Weimarer town hall had burned down, the city bought the old house. For centuries its charm was almost inconspicuous because plaster covered the beautiful facade. After the German Reunification Köstritzer Schwarzbierhaus, today a tavern, was meticulously and lovingly restored.

Weimar Girl

Fashion in Weimar, Germany: The women on the street looks at the model, seeing the other woman's body, as well as the product she sells, employing what's described as the "critical, evaluative 'shopper’s eye.'"

The Castle - Weimar - Thuringia - Germany

On the boundary of the city of Weimar is Weimar's City Palace. The palace was originally built on the site of a medieval moated castle and was first mentioned in documents at the end of the 10th century. Its current design has developed over more than a thousand years.
The castle comprises of two parts: The colourful portal and tower (remains of the original Rennaissance palace), and the newer rectangular lines of the Neoclassical model. They stand together to make for a grand imperial palace.
The castle forms an impressive part of the Weimar cityscape, and offers great views from wherever it is seen: approaching from the Marktplatz, the Park an der Ilm, or as pictured here from the Platz der Demokratie.

Weimar Germany - A town of timeless appeal

Weimar's marketplace is full of color, life and beautiful buildings. On its east side are the Stadthaus (Town House) and the Cranachhaus.
Town House (left): The original building in early Renaissance style was destryod in WWII. Rebuilt 1968-1971, the historic facade has been restored.
Cranach Haus (right)- early Renaissance style: Here Lucas Cranach the Elder had his "Painter Room" and worked on the famous three-wing altarpiece for the parish church - the work which his younger brother completed. The eye-catching building with columns, arched niches and shell ornaments was heavily damaged during the war and later restored. Today it is a cabaret theater.
