Sports Photography -- Capturing the Fleeting Moment

We have all at one time or another been captivated by sports images. It may be Kirk Gibson's World Series Homerun, and the image of him running the bases, overcoming the pain he was in or an image of high flying Michael Jordan slam dunking a basketball with his tongue out. We have all been captured in the moment of human drama. We all like a good action photo and, in particular, if your kids play sports, you want to remember them in their toils.
Quality sports shots are somewhat difficult to come by. Most people have limited access to events to photograph them. The further away you are from the event, the harder it becomes to capture the event in a pleasing manner. Sports are an event where crowd control is important, not only for the crowd's safety, but for the players also. There is nothing more frightening than to be on the sidelines of a football game, focused on a play in the field, when out of the blue a 250 pound line backer drives a player into your legs or a foul ball comes crashing at your $8,000 lens!

Location, Location, Location!
You can only photograph things you can see. The closer you are to someone, the better you can see them. Sports are no different. You have to get as close to what you are shooting as you can.

Please read on - here's Rob Miracle's full article.

What can youI do to capture the texture of fur?

If you're like most photography enthusiasts, you're fond of taking pictures of animals -- domestic, as well as wild -- whenever you get the chance.

What can you do to capture the texture of fur?

Cross- or side-lighting helps bring out the texture of animal fur. To be even more specific, we prefer about a one-stop difference between our main light source (this could be the sun or a flash) which is lighting our subject from the side, and our fill light, which is positioned near the camera and aimed directly at the subject. You can achieve this 2:1 side-to-front, main-to-fill ration placing your lights at appropriate distances.

Here's a nice article about it

Art Shows Call for Entries

Art Shows are an opportunity for photographers to exhibit their work. We have had tremendous success showing our photography at juried exhibitions, which were widely reviewed in several local art magazines and national newspapers. Other exhibitions have in several cases also opened up additional exhibition opportunites.

Pinhole photography

Pinhole photography is making photographs using a camera fitted with a tiny hole known as a pinhole in the place of a lens. Any light tight container that can hold a sensitive piece of film or photographic printing paper can be fitted with a pinhole to make photographs. There's a lot of detailed instructions on making and using pinhole cameras available on the Internet.

Pinhole photography is one of the earliest forms of photography. And it's a lot of fun - especially for kids!

Altering Images: Is There a Line?

How much should an image be altered from its original state? Simply stated, is there a line that's crossed if you digitally manipulate an image? I know for some traditional photographers this is a definite nono.

jrjphoto shares some very interesting thoughts about this subject with us.

Understanding Raw Files

There is probably more misinformation, disinformation and lack of information regarding what raw files are all about than on any other digital imaging topic. There are also many reasons why one should shoot in raw mode, but also quite a few reasons why many people don't.
Let's have a look at both.

Exposure

One of the most important concepts to understand, while operating a camera, is what determines the overall exposure of a photograph. On a single-lens reflex (SLR) camera, three controls determine the exposure. The controls are the shutter speeds, the aperture, and the film speed. Those settings have a direct relationship to one another which, after grasped will make exposure and the choices surrounding it easy.

Follow Jonathan Jackson through some valuable insights.

How to Effectively Photograph Water

For many nature photographers, water can be an important element of composition and an aggravating subject to photograph. However, after understanding a few technical aspects of photographing water, as a subject, the practice is much simpler. Instead of worrying about how to shoot, you can consider how to use water to your advantage. It can be used as one of the several wonderful elements of composition or to create a mood within the image.

The Role of the Brain

There would be no seeing without the brain. Indeed, sudden damage to the brain's visual cortex takes out not only sight itself but also the awareness that sight is now gone. I can't improve on this summary of the brain's overarching role in human vision:
In general, during daytime activity, the flow of information in the brain passes from the senses into primary input areas of the cortex, through secondary areas, into the limbic system at the base of the brain. In these limbic areas, it is believed that the information is finally interpreted in terms of its emotional impact and its implications for survival. From there, plans are formulated and elaborated in conjunction with the frontal ... cortex, and finally actions are implemented through the motor cortex.
Source: Regena Technology: Inspired by the architecture of the human brain.
Spatial and Interpretive Pathways
Charged with keeping its host reproducing and therefore mobile, well-fed, and out of trouble, the brain organizes eye outputs into visual experiences by working the visual scene along two largely separate pathways:
a spatial pathway dedicated to localizing objects and tracking their movements
an interpretive pathway dedicated to identifying objects and attaching significance to them
The spatial pathway directs the motor system in its physical interactions with the external world via a 3D world model constructed with inputs from all the senses. The interpretive pathway taps areas of the brain involved with emotion, memory, language and communication to arrive at what to do about what the eyes have reported and how to go about it.

The Role of the Eye

It's no mere cliché: The human eye truly is a marvel of adaptive optics. The eye's resolution and dynamic range lie far beyond the reach of any digital camera design. Under average conditions, it can accurately record detail with light intensities ranging over a factor of ~30,000 or 15 stops in any one scene, but the absolute dynamic range—from fully dark-adapted to fully light-adapted conditions—approaches a factor of 109, or ~30 stops. By way of comparison, good color slide film barely captures an intensity factor of 32, or 5 stops, while some B&W films and digital cameras approach 8 stops. With this kind of competition, it's a wonder any camera satisfies.

The eye is much more than an optical device, however. It's also an important outpost of the brain with its own complex neural networks responsible for a substantial amount of initial visual signal processing. Among the eye's more important processing tasks, at least in the photographic context, are the initial recognition and characterization of edges, the formation of the 3 basic visual sensations,
brightness (black-white opposition)
red-green opposition
yellow-blue oopposition
and the initial separation of the brightness and color channels found throughout the remainder of the visual chain.

Color Accuracy

Color accuracy is a constant frustration in photography, and digital and film cameras struggle equally in this regard. The narrow-band off-primary colors flowers have evolved to attract pollinators and discourage predators and freeloaders please the eye but tend to resist depiction as linear combinations of primary colors other than those used by the human eye.

Eyes, color films and digital cameras all sample the spectral content of incoming light using different primary colors, and all make different inferences regarding off-primary inputs. Spiky flower reflection spectra have a way of unmasking the substantial variations in peak and shape found in the tri-stimulus spectral response curves characteristic of
human color receptors
light-sensitive color film dyes
Bayer pattern color filters and other components in a typical digital camera's single-CCD color inference system

When discrepancies appear, we naturally regard the eye's color rendition as the correct one. But short of duplicating the eye's spectral responses in detail, cameras are doomed to render narrow-band off-primary flower colors differently.
