The enormous interior of St. Vitus Cathedral Prague

Saint Vitus' Cathedral (Katedrála svatého Víta) in Prague, CZ is the spiritual symbol of the Czech Republic. The the cathedral's foundation stone was laid in 1344 upon the site of an earlier 10th century rotunda. All in all it took nearly six centuries to complete this Gothic masterpiece. The windows of the Cathedral transmit a subtle and frequently coloured light. They have not only aesthetic but also symbolic significance. The enormous interior of St. Vitus Cathedral is a holy place ripped out of this world, a "heavenly Jerusalem", which is not illuminated by natural light but by the unearthly and mystical coloured light of God's glory. The window are regarded as the dividing line between this and God's world, into which we can glance and thereby uplift ourselves.

Old Town Hall Prague CZ

Prague’s Old Town Hall (Staromìstská radnice), founded in 1338, is a hotchpotch of medieval buildings acquired piecemeal over the centuries, presided over by a tall Gothic tower with a splendid Astronomical Clock. This was once the scene of a violent mass murder – 27 Czech statesmen were forced out of a window and fell to their deaths below. 27 white cobblestone crosses mark the spot, forever reminding Czechs of the possible danger in standing up to authority. The right-hand edge of Old Town Hall's neogothic eastern gable is ragged – the wing that once extended north from here as well as a Gothic chapel were blown up by the Nazis in 1945, one day before the Soviet army marched into the city. On the tower's left is the exquisite 'House at the Minute' (dùm U minuty - Minute House), an arcaded building covered with Renaissance sgraffito – Franz Kafka lived here (1889–96) as a child. Demolishing the house “At the Minute” was considered in the early 20th century, but fortunately it was saved and in 1919 the Renaissance sgraffitoes from the 17th century were discovered. Inside, the Old Town Hall offers insights to the inner workings of the 12 apostles who parade above the Astronomical Clock every hour, as well as several other historic attractions, e.g. beautiful mosaics from the 1930s, and Romanesque and Gothic cellars beneath the building. However, the town hall’s best feature are the views from its 60m-tall tower. They give a lovely perspective on the fascinating 'roofscape' of Prague's Old Town. The area outside Old Town Hall is one of the most crowded corners of Old Town Square, especially during the hourly show put on by the Astronomical Clock.

Old Town Square in Prague

Old Town Square (Staromìstské námìstí) is the oldest and most important square in historic Prague. Dating from before the 12th Century, it was originally a market place where merchants from all over Europe gathered. The lively square is lined with magnificent buildings in different architectural styles, from Gothic to Baroque. It is very well kept, and the buildings are in an excellent state. The Old Town Square has witnessed many events of historical importance including the execution of 27 Bohemian squires in 1621, and the installation of the new city council in 1784 after the five districts of Prague were united. It was also the epicenter of the Prague Uprising in May 1945. The Jan Hus Monument (1915) stands in the square's center. It is surrounded by a baroque mantle of some of the city's finest buildings (all of great historic and architectural interest) colored in pastel hues. Prague's Old Town Square is one of the most beautiful historical sights in Europe. It is hard to believe that this incredible profusion of stunning architecture doesn't belong to a film set. It's like an open-air museum. You can smell the history, and with the well maintained historical buildings, and the constant crowd buzz, you feel youself immersed in a magical atmosphere!
