The church, which is still standing, was constructed in 1768 from local limestone. It is still in operation. The Mission rounds are expansive. They provide a peaceful walk and give you a sense of the community that they must have had back then. The old mill in the back is still functioning, and where the arches are today is what is left of the old convent. Even though the Alamo in the middle of downtown San Antonio has the glamor of a legendary story with legendary figures in history, you can sense the history in a place like Mission San José much more than at the Alamo.
The mission lands were given to its Indians in 1794, and mission activities officially ended in 1824. After that, the buildings were home to soldiers, the homeless, and bandits. In the 1930s Mission San Jose was restored and is now part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. This gorgeous and historical "Queen of the Missions" is a great place to begin or end the San Antonio Missions Trail!
