Digicam History

DigiCam History.com is a non-profit, educational site provided for the free use of all digital camera enthusiasts. Visitors, including manufacturers, are encouraged to submit topics or photos concerning the historical development of consumer digicams for inclusion on this site as well as corrections, and/or additional information.

It started with CAMERA OBSCURA - 1490.
Leonardo da Vinci wrote the first detailed description of camera obscura in his Atlantic Codex, a 1,286 page collection of drawings and writings. The principle of camera obscura involves punching a hole in a dark box and putting a piece of light-sensitive material on the other side thereby providing a photograph. The first picture of a pinhole camera obscura is a drawing by Gemma Frisus' De Radio, an astronomer (above photo on the left). He used the pinhole in his darkened room to study the solar eclipse of 1544. Viist the web site of Stewart Lewis Woodruff at users.rcn.com/ stewoody/quote.htm and learn how to build and use pinhole cameras (camera obscuras).

(Note that availability of the SD14 has been delayed until late February or early March.) In the papers a comparison with conventional image sensors is made and you will find information on how this relates to "pixel count" and how it may affect image and color resolution. The more technical version of the papers discusses the adaptation of camera test procedures to do justice to this unique image sensor...

Now you can learn the ins and outs of this art form from pro shooter Bobbi Lane in the Calumet-produced DVD, Portrait Lighting Techniques with Bobbi Lane. DXO for optimum image correction, enhancement and RAW processing

If you shoot digital, you're probably more familiar with the need for corrective post processing than you'd like to be. Thankfully, software tools exist to ease and automate the work of digital image correction. Standing out as a primary player among such applications is DXO Optics Pro. Unlike other correction and enhancement tools, DXO Optics Pro corrects more than the most common digital suspects like lens distortion, exposure, noise-correction, vignetting, softness and chromatic aberrations. It takes things a step further and corrects for horizon adjustments, keystonning correction and the new version features a Volume Anamorphosis correction feature for ultra-wide lenses to fix extreme distortion and deformities of images shot using a fisheye lens. Let's not forget about color correction. DXO Optics Pro offers all the typical color corrective tools you'd expect, plus more. Some color features include multi-point color balance and color rendition profiles to make all your images look like they were shot with the same camera. And, perhaps best of all, use it as a standalone application or Photoshop plug-in. Look to DXO for optimum image correction, enhancement and RAW processing.

It is better to laminate a poster than framing it?

A poster is a great gift for any occasion - or even if there is no special occasion to celebrate!

A poster normally has a better coup-d'oeil mounted than framed. Of course, this depends from product to product, and size to size. Some giant posters would actually look better framed than mounted (laminated).

Clear lamination is an effective solution for protecting your print or poster from fading, dirt, fingerprints, moisture and other contaminants. Select your print or poster. Choose to have it laminated. It's that quick. It's that simple.

Transferring a print on to Canvas is an elegant treatment that transforms the image to look like an original painting. The print is adhered to a canvas material with a UV coated acrylic finish to protect the image from dust, moisture and fading.

Making a great poster can be fun and is certainly a challenge! Here are some ideas about how to get the most attention for your efforts http://www.aspb.org/education/poster.cfm

Difference Between a Poster and an Art Print

The main difference between a poster and an art print is quality.
Posters are typically printed in large volume on less expensive paper while Art Prints are printed on a higher paper grade. This gives the latter true photographic quality. You will also notice that art prints are a bit more expensive than posters. As far as possible, we recommend purchasing Art Prints rather than Posters. The color quality will be much superior and last at least 3 times longer than normal posters (affiches).

We DO NOT recommend buying posters or art prints as is. If you are on a shoestring budget, add a few more dollars and laminate it for best bang. We personally recommend that you mount it. Mounted posters are much cheaper than framed ones and will look great on your home or office wall.

A great source for posters is http://www.art.motivational-posters.net/
They offer a lot of Inspirational Artworks.

Digital Frames Go Mainstream in 2006, Wireless in 2007

Just as TVs are everywhere at CES, this year digital frames could be found in booths around every corner. Most play MP3 music files and handle multiple-size camera memory cards. The only news in this market that is marching mainstream into homes is that many of the newest 2007 frames are wireless.
Here are some new frames I came across at CES, but I'm sure there are many, many more. If you've got a brand you like, chances are it is offering a Wi-Fi frame, or will soon.
Ceiva has been in the digital frame business for seven years, with a twist. Its frames receive daily updates via phone lines so photos can be sent by families and friends directly to the frames. This year at CES, Ceiva showed its first wireless 7-inch frame ($149.99) and the pictured 8-inch frame ($199.99). Ceiva requires monthly photo plan fees starting at $6.95. Ceiva also displayed a new 15-inch wall-mounted frame with a wood frame and linen mat, which will be available later in the year for between $599 and $699.
Kodak entered the digital frame fray with 8-inch and 10-inch frames, including a Wi-Fi frame in each size ($179.95 and $279.95) One frame is a whiteboard, so you can use erasable markers to write notes or changes designs. For a kids' room? I'm not really sure.
Mustek unveiled a few digital frames with features that stand out among the crowd, though, curiously, they don't offer Wi-Fi ability. A 15-inch wall-mounted frame, which can hold about 2,000 photos, is available for $499.99. A new 8-inch frame can display photos on a schedule determined by a built-in, changeable clock and the frame's menu can be accessed via touchscreen buttons on the LCD screen. When the frame is off, it's a mirror. I supposed that's better than a black, empty frame.
Is this the year you embrace digital frames to help showcase photos?

Canon PowerShot G7 review

Just when you thought the days of the prosumer camera were over, up pops the Canon G7. Duncan Evans investigates. With the dramatic falling of prices for digital SLRs and the introduction of inexpensive, entry-level models, the days of the so-called bridge camera, the prosumer model that sat uneasily between feature-rich compacts and true SLRs, looked well and truly over. To an extent, they are, which is why Canon''''s G7 has had to reposition itself.
Specifications
6x optical zoom with optical Image Stabilizer
10Mp resolution
DIGIC III and iSAPS
Face Detection AF/AE
2.5" LCD screen
ISO1600
ISO and multi-control dials
25 shooting modes
ND filter built in
Digital Tele-Converter and Safety Zoom
JPEG file format
With the G7 Canon has rather retreated from the bridge camera market and the styling of the previous models in the series, and instead repackaged it as a feature-rich compact for the more serious amateur.

Zoran's heart of the digital camera

Zoran, a California based provider of solutions for the digital imaging market has been showing various products at the recent CES. It is evident that the electronic heart of many modern digital cameras is based on the same circuitry and is no longer the discriminating factor. Cameras from Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Samsung, Sony and others using are using the same processors.
So when you're shopping for a digital camera, you may focus on other factors, such as camera design and - most important - the camera lens...

Pentax's New Optio for Novices

Nothing about the new Pentax Optio E30 compact digital camera will knock your socks off, especially given its somewhat bland design and plastic exterior. But with a list price just a nickel under $150, you won't loose your shirt either. The new 7-megapixel camera has a modest feature set: 3X optical zoom lens, a 2.4-inch LCD, a maximum aperture range of F/2.7 to F/4.8, 11 megabytes of on-board memory, and runs on two AA batteries. But it's not only compatible with SD. It can also store image and video on the newer SDHC-format of SD memory cards, which are higher capacity cards that are available in storage capacities greater than 2GB, which is the limit for SD cards.

Since it's a camera targeted for novices, the E30 features a Green Mode, a very simple auto mode that allows consumers the ability to simply point and shoot, without needing to worry about any exposure settings. However, the camera does have more than a dozen scene modes, which are accessible through a new interface, called a mode palette. Consumers can also shoot video clips at VGA (640 x 480) quality at 20 fps to the capacity of the card.

The Optio E30 will be available in next month. Stay tuned for our hands-on First Looks review of this and other cameras in the upcoming months.

Casio sees Best Buy selling cameras across U.S.

Japan's Casio Computer Co. Ltd. (6952.T) said on Monday Best Buy Co. Inc. was likely to start selling its digital cameras throughout its U.S. network of stores soon, following a successful test.

Casio's digital cameras were sold at a limited number of Best Buy stores for three months last year and sales were more than twice as high as the top U.S. electronics retailer had expected, Casio President Kazuo Kashio told Reuters in an interview at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
