Pentax's New Optio for Novices

Nothing about the new Pentax Optio E30 compact digital camera will knock your socks off, especially given its somewhat bland design and plastic exterior. But with a list price just a nickel under $150, you won't loose your shirt either. The new 7-megapixel camera has a modest feature set: 3X optical zoom lens, a 2.4-inch LCD, a maximum aperture range of F/2.7 to F/4.8, 11 megabytes of on-board memory, and runs on two AA batteries. But it's not only compatible with SD. It can also store image and video on the newer SDHC-format of SD memory cards, which are higher capacity cards that are available in storage capacities greater than 2GB, which is the limit for SD cards.

Since it's a camera targeted for novices, the E30 features a Green Mode, a very simple auto mode that allows consumers the ability to simply point and shoot, without needing to worry about any exposure settings. However, the camera does have more than a dozen scene modes, which are accessible through a new interface, called a mode palette. Consumers can also shoot video clips at VGA (640 x 480) quality at 20 fps to the capacity of the card.

The Optio E30 will be available in next month. Stay tuned for our hands-on First Looks review of this and other cameras in the upcoming months.
