Skull Rock Joshua Tree National Park California

One of the many interesting sites in Joshua Tree National Park is Skull Rock which - the name says it all! - vaguely resembles a huge human skull.
This naturally weathered granite rock formation stares out across an otherworldly landscape of shattered boulders, tumbling tumbleweeds and eerily twisted Joshua trees.
More weird looking rock formations can be found along a 1.5 miles hike that winds to the south and north through boulders, desert washes, and a rocky alleyway. Passing giant, rounded rock formations makes one tempted to forget the trail and try to climb these big boulders that eerily resemble humans, dinosaurs, or monsters.

Good bye Death Valley - The End of the Desert

Death Valley, the name is foreboding and gloomy. In the past, it was known as a place to avoid because this was not only a desert, it was the worst desert to attempt to navigate in any way.
Today it is relatively easy to visit Death Valley. Travelers can come by bus or car. The roads in and out of the valley are paved and maintained; not freeways, of course, but easy enough and safe enough for any passenger car. And driving off of the established roads within Death Valley National Park is prohibited.
So get out there and experience this marvelous part of nature that most people never see.

Mesquite Flat Dunes - Death Valley California

The most visible (but not the largest) sand dunes in Death Valley National Park, California, are the Mesquite Flat Dunes. The dunes appear out of nowhere in the middle of the basin.
A hike into the Mesquite Flat dunes can be as long or short, arduous or easy as you wish to make it. There is no official trailhead, nor do any maintained trails lead into them. Instead you may park along the shoulders of Highway 190 and improvise your own route into this remarkable 14 square mile landscape.
It is almost impossible to have a disappointing experience among these waves of sand, unless you head into them during a sandstorm or at midday during the summer.

Death Valley - Land of Extremes

Death Valley National Park is located in eastern California, along the Nevada border, about 200 miles northeast of Los Angeles, U.S.A.
It is a land of extremes: Hottest, driest, lowest. To the west, the Panamint Mountains reach an elevation of 11,049 feet at the summit of Telescope Peak, the highest spot in the park. On the opposite extreme, Badwater Basin, at 282 feet below sea level, is the lowest place in the western hemisphere. The floor of the valley receives less than two inches of rain per year, and clear blue skies without a cloud are normal all seasons of the year. Since the valley is secluded between high arid mountain ridges, it is well sheltered from any cool breezes, so the sun heats the valley floor and rocky walls to very high temperatures. During the summer months, temperatures of 130 F (50 C) are not uncommon. It seldom drops below 100 degrees even in the night.
Death Valley is a superlative desert of streaming sand dunes, snow-capped mountains, multicolored rock layers, water-fluted canyons and 3 million acres of wilderness. Home to the Timbisha Shoshone people and to plants and animals unique to the harshest desert.

Death Valley National Park - Hot - Dry - Beautiful

Few names in the American West are as well known as Death Valley.
Pioneers feared crossing this dry, hot, barren area and only the lure of finding gold or other valuable minerals finally opened the area to exploration. In 1849 emigrants bound for California's gold fields strayed into the 120-mile (193-kilometer) long basin, enduring a two-month ordeal of "hunger and thirst and an awful silence." One of the last to leave looked down from a mountain at the narrow valley and said, "Good-bye, Death Valley" - the name lives on today.
Death Valley, in California and Nevada, is not for the faint of heart. It is big and its terrain very challenging. During the summer, it can be more than 120° in the shade, but the rocks and sand absorb the heat and the ground temperature can get to be 160°. Dehydration is the main cause of fatalities in Death Valley. The hot dry air just sucks the moisture out of the human body - over one gallon of water while just sitting in the shade, twice as much While hiking in the sun!
Death Valley is dangerous and mysterious by day. By night, it is otherworldly.

Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes Death Valley - Spectacularly abstract

If you see a calendar photograph of rippled, golden or reddish dunes with barren desert peaks in the distance, chances are the photograph is of the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park, California.
It is both delightful and fun to explore these 14 square miles of wind sculpted sand dunes composed of quartz granules. They have been used to film sand dune scenes for several movies including films in the Star Wars series.
