Guide to Careers In Photography

Introduction
When Joseph Nicephore Niépce created the first photograph in the summer of 1827, he did not just capture the world --he changed it. Since that time scientists, inventors and artists have improved on the processes for preserving images. We are exposed to photographs from breakfast to bedtime. They are on our milk cartons, our driver's licenses, on billboards and in our albums. Yet for all our daily familiarity with photos, nothing, in nearly 200 years of their existence, has managed to diminish the wonder, power and magic they still evoke within us.

There were around 131,000 photography jobs in the year 2000 and the number is expected to grow at a rate of about 10 to 20 percent over the first decade. The character of these jobs, however, may be changing. With the advent of digital photography and the popularity of electronic forms of news and entertainment, individuals seeking a photography career will be seeing demand for their talents shifting in new directions. Most photographers are employed in television, mailing and reproduction services, newspapers or as portrait photographers. But, regardless of where the work is, we will continue need and depend on individuals with creativity and vision to help us to see ourselves.
