East Side Pride

The winners now have a permanent home

"Take Pride in the East Side" student photography competition was an idea that originated in 2005, materialized in 2006 and will soon have a permanent home at the Texas Tech Southwest Collections/Special Collections Library.
The exhibit will go on display at the Southwest Collections on Wednesday and remain up through March 10.
The concept of the exhibition originated by a committee as an attempt to bring attention to the positive aspects of the east side of Lubbock while also encouraging children to get behind the lens of a camera, said Dawn Wolf-Taylor, coordinator of education, programs and exhibits at the Underwood Center.

Jontel Perry won the "Take Pride in the East Side" photo competition with this picture. The exhibit opens Wednesday at the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech.
"We tried to engage students from around the city," Wolf-Taylor said. "We told art teachers, neighborhood centers, churches and youth groups."
More than 150 photos were submitted by students 10 to 14 years old, and 40 were chosen to be included in the exhibit, she said. This was a $10,000 project, which covered the expense of framing the photographs and also the cost of workshops held for the students, she said.

Jonathon Ibarra's photo for Take Pride in the East Side photo competition is called "Laffy Daffy."
About 25 percent of the children who submitted a photo attended the workshops, she said.
"These children received lessons from really important photographers," Wolf-Taylor said. "They took them around to different sights on the East Side and helped them look through the lens."
The photographers who worked with the children were really impressed, she said.

"It will be a really nice document of this part of the community for the future," Wolf-Taylor said. "It's a very interesting perspective, and it's a thing that will be very valuable in the future. People will be able to look back and see how the East Side was."
After being exhibited, the photos will be removed from their frames and placed into the permanent Southwest Collection, which will remain available for viewing and also to be checked out, Wolf-Taylor said.
The students who participated by submitting photographs for the exhibit, their parents, sponsors and other participants will be honored at a reception at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Southwest Collection.
