De Gaulle And His Troops

While you can catch a glimpse of the valley from the highway, the best way to explore the Valley of the Gods in Utah is on the narrow, graded-gravel track of the Valley of the Gods Road (County Road 242). The road bumps, grinds, rises, and falls for 17 miles, winding past most of the dozen or so major formations that climb above the valley floor.

Some of the formations are named for obvious reasons: Battleship Rock does indeed look like a massive - albeit rusty - ship mired in dry dock, and Setting Hen is a knockoff of a roosting fowl. Balanced Rock, though, bears a striking resemblance to a Lady in a Tub, which is its other name. Eight miles into the valley are Castle Butte and De Gaulle and His Troops, a formation that obviously inspired a lot of imagination.

The valley's lack of designated trails is not a drawback. April and May are the perfect months to visit. Several television programs including Airwolf and Doctor Who have featured the the scenic area.

The American Southwest

The American Southwest contains more than its fair share of natural wonders. The region is home to a wonderful and vibrant mix of anglo, latino, hispanic, and American Indian traditions making it one of the most diverse, interesting, and picturesque corners of America with regards to history, landscape and culture.

Contrary to the Southwest's image as a sprawling desert, it is one of the most geographically diverse regions in the United States. Beginning at the high elevations of the Wasatch and Rocky Mountains the landscape descends into dramatic bluffs and mesas before emptying out on the flatlands of the Rio Grande. The dry climate and dramatic red rock landscapes help tie the region together despite the dramatic differences in elevation.

The stunning red mountains, buttes, mesas, canyons and cliffs, the gorgeous desert and tumbleweed tumbling is all so strikingly different, stunning!. The dramatic landscape calls for an emotional response that runs through your body.

Valley Of The Gods - Escape From Civilization

If you are in the Valley of the Gods area in Utah this is one trail that you should not miss. The valley springs up out of nowhere with a sight to see at every turn. It almost feels like a national park but it hasn't gotten to that step yet. There are pull outs to stop and admire the scenery, but there are no signs to point out the names of the features.

There are no tour busses or tourist traps in the area, no gas stations, gift shops, coffee shops, washrooms, and rarely any other tourists. Most are hesitant to bring their vehicles on the trail because it can be very rough and bumpy and subject to washouts. Some areas have rocks exposed from the shifting sands and scraping bottom is a strong possibility. However, the solitude and serenity of the area is well worth the extra hour it takes one to get through it.

Valley of the Gods is an eerie, desolate, magnificent landscape. If you want to escape from civilization, look no further.

Papa Was A Rolling Stone

While just about everyone has heard of Monument Valley or seen it in the movies, few have heard of the Valley of the Gods, 40 miles up the road in Utah.

Warriors frozen in time is how Navajo legends are said to describe the eerie, red rock spires in Valley of the Gods. In fact, the rocks forming this stark landscape are much older than the Navajo. This rocky valley lies at the base of Cedar Mesa, and the rocks were deposited by the invasion of a shallow sea about 250 million years ago. Over time, the water retreated, and the ancient sandstones and shales gradually turned red or purple as the iron in the rocks mixed with oxygen to form rust.

Valley of the Gods is the kind of place where you want to park the car and go exploring. There are no marked trails, and: Watch out for rattlesnakes in the underbrush! Or, drag out the beach chairs, books, something cold to drink and just be.

Owachomo Bridge - Natural Bridges Utah

Natural Bridges National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of the Four Corners boundary of southeast Utah, in the western United States. It features three natural bridges, one of them is the second largest natural bridge in the world, carved from the white Permian sandstone of the Cedar Mesa Formation that gives White Canyon its name.

Owachomo Bridge is the smallest and thinnest of the three natural bridges here and is commonly thought to be the oldest. We may never know for certain, as each of the bridges certainly have eroded at different rates. Regardless of its relative age, Owachomo Bridge is certainly the most fragile and elegant of the three spans, and an awe inspiring feature of erosion. The iconic bridge is 32-meter High and 55-meter long, while only 3-meter thick.

Natural Bridges National Monument is the first ever international Dark Sky Park as designated by International Dark Sky Association in 2007.

Epic Monument Valley

Monument Valley (Tse Bii' Ndzisgaii is the Navajo (Dine) term, which means Valley of the Rocks) is a vast landscape of sandstone buttes and mesas and free-standing formations on the Colorado Plateau. A part of the Navajo Nation Reservation, it was occupied by Paleo-Indians from 12,000 BC, the Archaic hunter-gatherers from 6,000 BC, Anasazi farmers from 1-1300 AD, Paiutes from 1300 AD, and finally the Navajo. The Anasazi left behind some ruins and a number of petroglyphs which are shown in this section.

Many of the huge rust-colored sandstone buttes, mesas and other formations are nearly 1,000 feet tall. There is a haunting sensation that they are waiting for something momentous or cataclysmic to happen. It seems they hold tremendous power, like great slumbering animals frozen in time. They have been waiting, in silent majesty, for millions of years.

Monument Valley's amazing scenery, seen in so many films, truly lives up to its reputation for spectacular views.

Monument Valley - The Thumb

Each moment of the day casts a new light and new shadow onto Monument Valley on the state line from Utah to Arizona. This, this, this wonderful place should be the Mecca for all Americans who want to appreciate the beauty of their country - it is the apogee of the American West and a treasure for the world. However, despite its pedigree and its knockout beauty, Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park gets relatively few tourists: 500,000 a year, compared with the estimated 5 million for the Grand Canyon. And most of those tourists are from overseas.

Breathe the air, feel the red silt slide between your fingers, listen quietly, contently and enjoy this sabbatical from the rush of civilization and take time to relish the fleeting moments you have in your little flesh and bone vessel traveling through this wonderful life: at Monument Valley.

The Thumb is a free standing spire apart from Camel Butte. This formation also looks like a cowboy boot and is often called 'John Wayne's boot'.

Monument Valley - Unusual Landscape

Almost nothing about Monument Valley fits easy categories, starting with its location within the 26,000-square-mile Navajo reservation. The park entrance is in Utah, but the most familiar rock formations are in Arizona. The site is not a national park, like nearby Canyonlands, in Utah, and the Grand Canyon, in Arizona, but one of six Navajo-owned tribal parks. What's more, the valley floor is still inhabited by Navajo - 30 to 100 people, depending on the season, who live in houses without running water or electricity.

The valley's isolation, in one of the driest and most sparsely populated corners of the American Southwest, helped protect it from the outside world. There is no evidence that 17th- or 18th-century Spanish explorers ever found it, although they roamed the area and came in frequent conflict with the Navajo, who called themselves Dine or "The People."

Much of Monument Valley can only ber seen on tours conducted by official Navajo guides. This policy protects the traditonal land-use patterns of Navajo families who have lived in the valley and surrounding areas for generations, and it guarantees a richer and more complete experience to visitors from around the world - unusual views at the best times of day, stories and legends of the Navajo people, ancient ruins, and an insider's view of the most spectacular landscape in the Navajo Nation.

Monument Valley

- Stagecoach, Bear and Rabbit, Castle Rock (which all appear to be one formation know as "Castle Butte")
- Right and Left (West and East) Mitten

Located inside the Navajo Nation - one of the largest Native American tribes in the U.S. - Monument Valley is around four hours northeast of Flagstaff, near the Four Corners area.

One of the grandest landmarks in the United States, Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park is a sprawling, sandy preserve that spans the border between Arizona and Utah, bathing the region in rich red hues. Dominated by crimson mesas and surreal sandstone towers - some as tall as 1,000 feet - the area is also known for dramatic, mesmerizing lighting, with the sun illuminating the towers and casting long shadows on the valley floor.

Many Medicine Men still hold their daily ceremonial rituals here. Many of the plants that grow here are used year round, whether it is for food, herbs, dyes, or many other useful things.

Monument Valley - Icon Of The West

Monument Valley Tribal Park is a unique place. There is no other place like this on earth. This area is one of the planet's most scenic wonders, and the rock formations in Monument Valley are some of the world's most amazing rock formations, pinnacles, mesas, spires, and cliffs. It is an area of unbelievable beauty.

Hollywood has taken advantage of this area, and Monument Valley has been the backdrop for many movies and TV commercials. One of the Tribal Park's amazing spires is The Totem Pole, perhaps the world's tallest and skinniest spire. The Navajo Tribe has strictly stuck to their rule of 'no rock climbing' in the park, but with Hollywood money, we have seen Clint Eastwood and George Kennedy "climb" the Totem Pole, McGyver land a handglider on the Totem Pole's summit, and Xerox put a desk with a secretary on top of the Pole's summit as well.

Monument Valley is an icon of the West. Its spectacular rock formations are beautiful from far away and up close. It is like a Holy Land for many, and a place of worship for others. Mother Earth is truly a land of wonder.

Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park

Monument Valley, straddling the border of northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah of the Colorado Plateau, preserves some of the most striking and recognizable landscapes of sandstone buttes, mesas and spires in the entire Southwest. The area is entirely within the Navajo Indian Reservation near the small Indian town of Goulding, established in 1923 as a trading post.

The impressive sandstone formations: buttes, spires, and towers - the geological monuments that gave Monument Valley its name - are the result of centuries and millennia of erosion and uplift. Red sandstone cliffs and spires are predominantly made of Cutler Formation sandstone from the Permian period of around 160 million years ago. Volcanic action also created some of the formations in Monument Valley, such as Chiastla Butte and Agathla Peak.

Monument Valley is more than just a park or nature preserve; it is home to Navajo people who have preserved their traditions, their language, their art forms, their pastoral sheep-herding way of life, and their relation of harmony and respect with the land. Today, Monument Valley is protected as a Navajo Tribal Park. The scene of countless western movies, the valley has come to symbolize the open spaces and rugged landscape of the American West.

Monument Valley - The Classic View

Monument Valley (Navajo: Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii, meaning valley of the rocks) is perhaps the most famous example of the classic American West landscape. Located within the Navajo Nation near the Four Corners on the border of Arizona and Utah, this region of the Colorado Plateau is characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor.

This iconic "Wild West" landscape feels incredibly familiar - the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park has been the backdrop for numerous western movies, ranging from the films of John Wayne to 'Back to the Future 3', 'Easy Rider', 'Thelma and Louise' and 'Forrest Gump'. Ansel Adams, Georgia O’Keeffe and Annie Leibovitz have also captured the timeless beauty of Monument Valley. The Valley has helped to make each of these photographers famous.

As a result, it is difficult to come away with some great photographs without having them be a cliche. But no image can possibly capture the scope of this valley and how magnificent it is. John Ford, who filmed Westerns in the valley, called it the "most complete, beautiful and peaceful place on earth."

Mexican Hat Rock

Mexican Hat, near the Four Corners in between Monument Valley and Bluff, Utah, is named after a geological marvel of erosion. The persistent sands, wind, and water of time have sculpted the sandstone of the Mexican Hat Rock into what it is today. Sombrero, the Spanish word for the Mexican Hat was too difficult to spell, so Mexican Hat's well read town founders stuck to their guns on the English version of the word.

The surrounding scenery is exceptional. The Navajo Tapestry - wavy geometric colors in the rock strata - makes a colorful backdrop to the desert landscape, featuring 1,200 foot sandstone cliffs at the edge of Cedar Mesa, deep, layered canyons of the San Juan River, vast sandy desert plains, and a wide valley studded with isolated red rock buttes and mesas. The greenery along the water's edge contrasts vividly with the swirling reds and grays of the canyon walls.

The Navajo Indian Reservation lies on the other side of the river, and a major portion of Mexican Hat's population is Native American. Monument Valley and Valley of the Gods are nearby scenic attractions. The Arizona border is about ten miles to the south as the crow flies, but much further by road.
