26-year-old O’Brien was killed in a car accident on October 18. She had swerved to avoid a deer while driving from Detroit to New York to photograph her husband’s rock band, Electric Jellyfish. O’Brien’s husband, Hayden Rodney Sweeney, was also killed.

O’Brien worked as a stringer for Newsday from 2004 to 2006, covering sports and then news. After graduating from UCLA in 2003, she photographed a piece on fair-trade practices for the USA Today.

Newsday’s director of photography Jeff Schamberry described O’Brien as “always upbeat and always smiling. She never turned down an assignment, no matter what, day or night. Anything we threw at her she could handle.”
