Three Arch Rocks - Oceanside near Cape Meares - Oregon

Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge was the first National Wildlife Refuge west of the Mississippi River. The refuge has provides protection for Oregon's largest seabird nesting colony of more 230,000 birds.
The refuge was established thanks to the efforts of conservationists William L. Finley and Herman Bohlman. In the early 1900s they witnessed and photographed hunters killing dozens of sea lions at a time for skin and oil, and sportsmen shooting thousands of birds on the island just for the fun of it. Even worse, due to a scarcity of regional chicken farms at the time, seabird eggs were priced at up to a dollar per dozen, encouraging egg harvesting, which drastically reduced the bird colony population.
In 1903 the pair brought the photos and their findings to then President Theodore Rosevelt, and on October 14 1907 The Wildlife Refuge was created to protect dwindling seabird and marine mammal populations and ensure their survival.
